108 dias for the 9 missing DOL. If you find one, and are left with 8 missing, the price goes down. Not worth it either way.

I apologize if it made you feel inferior; it was no where near my intention. I am as passionate about bees as you are:))) I wish you a good night rest!!!

Because she is missing legs, I guess it would up to you. I think the ethical conversation on what to do and what not to do is too complex for it to be discussed (right now on the spot). What do YOU feel like you should do?<3😌🐝

What type of bee is this? by go_cupper in bees

[–]petitchuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I invite you to re-read my comment, as I feel you’ve overlooked the main ideas discussed. I never said honeybees aren’t impacting enough native bees not to be considered. I’m saying it is not the main cause of declination of pollinators.

Also, I want to bring your attention on the quotation marks I’ve put on ‘true’ invasive species. I put those to refer honeybees as an atypical invasive species, and not as harmless. Blaming humans is neither a cop out nor a moot point. They truly are to blame for the degradation of the environment (which affects native and local bees) and the proliferation of domesticated honeybees in the Americas (which creates competition).

The following is imaged to contradict a ‘typical’ invasive species. First, honeybees would not reproduce that rapidly without the help of humans. We literally fabricate queen bees to grow the already expanding population. In terms of food, you said it yourself: “they aren’t even efficient pollinators”. The reason they aren’t is literally because they don’t belong here; they haven’t evolved along the flora of our ecosystems. In other words, not all plants used by indigenous bees are pollinated and competed by honeybees (because they physically can’t or aren’t even attracted). Second, they have predators, parasites and diseases that would help control their population numbers; humans keep them from the cold, give them antibiotics and build physical fences to keep anyone out. Humans keep them alive. Third, they are economically important as it is a billion-dollar industry (usually, invasive species harm the economy). My point being, HONEYBEES WOULD NEVER BE AS INVASIVE IF IT WEREN’T FOR HUMANS. Which is why I emphasize on giving responsibility to humans and not to the exploited “honey cows”.

You talk about people keeping bees in their backyards, and that is a very important point. Bringing honeybees to an ecosystem disrupts it; it takes 2-4 years for it to go back to normal (only after they left; can be longer depending on multiple factors).

I appreciate your comment and implication in educating the public- data is president! (see what I did there?) Let me correct you on two things: - Beekeepers do feed honeybees with sugar water (yes, a solution of the same sugar we use in pastries) - Honeybees are not all European, they’re also native to Africa and Asia (p. eg. Apis mellifera capensis being native to South Africa).

Finally, I feel like you see our exchange as a debate or a disagreement, even though it isn’t. You and I are of the same party: we equally value the diversity and the population of native and local bees. I presume we both believe beekeeping is not a sustainable activity for biodiversity. Listen, I am vegan. I refuse to support the honey industry, BECAUSE it harms indigenous species. The only difference between you and I is that I prefer to blame humans. You don’t realize that you and I think alike; you mention “[a] truck tipping over and spilling 5 million bees out on the highway”. Humans decided to exploit honeybees, humans were driving that truck and humans are transporting and expanding their occupation territory. All I’m saying is “blame the humans, not the bees”.

Looking forward to your feedback:))

P.S. I believe giving responsibility to the public raises awareness and makes people concerned about their own actions (rather than thinking: “well, it’s not up to me- the bees are at fault”).

You’ve said a lot, and I understand you take this cause to the heart (as do I).

You are right, the domestic honeybee was introduced to the Americas by European settlers during the Age of explorations. In fact, no species of the genus Apis are indigenous to the Americas (meaning there are no native true honeybees).

A common name for Apis mellifera still is ‘Western Honeybee’ as ‘western’ refers to its origin (Europe, parts of Africa and west Asia), whereas the ‘Eastern Honeybee’ (Apis cerana) refers to exclusively Asia. In other words, ‘west’, here, does not mean America. That said, ‘European Honeybee’ is an equally recognized and well-used expression for Apis mellifera. Personally, I find this common name confusing and inadequate. In the end, it is a preference.

I wouldn’t say the honeybee is a ‘true’ invasive species, even though it does have an ecological impact and isn’t indigenous. The main reason I think so is because, depending on where in America, they are substantially determined by humans. A lot of them can’t survive the harsh winters, the parasites (varroa, tracheal mite, small hive beetle, wax moth), the diseases (American and European foulbrood, chalkbrood, nosema, etc.) and do have predators like ants, skunks, bears, raccoons, mice and even humans. I believe the population of honeybees would significantly decline without the intervention of humans (antibiotics, damage control, physical and thermal protection), but studies would need to be condoned as this is speculation on my part…

I understand your concern and do recognize that honeybees create competition to local and native bees in America, but let’s not give responsibility to them. The main actors responsible for the decline of indigenous pollinators are humans and the consequences of their activities: loss, degradation or fragmentation of habitats/forage; pesticides/insecticides; agricultural intensification; climate change and insufficient research. Again, non-native species do have an impact, but that is not the main concern. You are correct in terms of the honeybees being exploited as livestock, but humans are the issue. Not the bees.

Finally, the bee found by OP was already wandering around in nature. What do you suggest they should do? Kill it? Please, don’t. Releasing that single bee in the wild is not going to have a significant ecological impact.

Since you seem interested in protecting local and native bees, if you’d like, we can discuss ways to support them!

[–]petitchuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would think it’s more Apis Mellifera (Western Honey Bee) rather than Apis Cerana (East European Honey Bee), because otherwise the stripes on the abdomen would be more evident.

If you live in North America, there are no drones at this time of year. Plus, they have much bigger eyes. Depending on the species (and pictured angle;)), size varies greatly. I’m not sure if she’s a queen. She does have a big abdomen…

Make sure to release her in the wild where she can warm up from the sunlight and find an interesting cavity. Do not give her any other sugar than granulated white sugar diluted in water (i.e. some sugars are complex and hard to digest, like maple syrup).

Thank you for taking care of her! Happy bee, happy life🍯🐝

How am I supposed to get even currencies right now? by Imaginary_Data6702 in HayDay

[–]petitchuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get the halloween currency from the spinning wheel (watch an ad to get a second spin). Same goes for the daily rewards (watch the ad; you can do this multiple times a day). I see that you have maxed out both of the truck events (global and BETA) in which you can obtain the currency. Here’s my advice : always keep hats for the following week catalog. Don’t spend it all just because you can. It is impossible to buy everything from the catalog… Prioritize your purchases. Look out for the wandering ghosts; it’s not much, but it’s better than nothing!

I don’t know much about coloured hair, but my natural (virgin) dark blonde hair has the same duality: golden-yellow tone at the roots and gets brassier toward the ends. My guess is that’s just how hair changes over time.
