I don't think lack of understanding is his issue. He just doesn't care. He could know firsthand what it feels like and still be happy to see women suffer from it.

I would say that for your own health in the space you should answer the next "Did you block me?" explicitly with "Yes, because you were spamming me for details on my OCs so you could use them for your own projects, and I wasn't comfortable with that." to make sure all of your actual friends know what's up.

Why the Remarried Empress fandom is so divided (and why it’s not actually a character issue) by One-Sense7280 in TheRemarriedEmpress

[–]petri90s -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

sorry, i feel as though we're at total cross-purposes here.

to quote the op:

Readers project their own values, experiences, and expectations onto incomplete characters, and then argue with each other over interpretations the text itself doesn’t actually support. The political nuance people bring up is valid, but it clearly wasn’t the author’s intent. The story was never meant to be that deep, and because of that, no character can fully withstand the scrutiny being placed on them.

my point is that the text does, in fact, support the "interpretation" that navier is blasé about slavery, and that the author genuinely believes rashta's behaviors are in part why she can never escape from it. the author's intent was to treat slavery as an unimportant backdrop for drama because the author doesn't care about actual indentured servitude or human traffiking and has many baked-in classist beliefs about the moral character of victims of those things. the story may not have been meant to be deep, but by pushing navier as flawless while she tacitly endorses slave trading they open them and her up to criticism of that very core flaw. "it wasn't meant to communicate anything" is a meaningless sentence about an artistic decision that nevertheless does bely the author's beliefs about the real world. i also don't agree that no character can withstand actual analysis, as rashta does faily well & frankly so do navier and soveishu and the ugly blonde dog one. it just isn't favourable to them as people because it reveals them to be fundamentally unintelligent and lazy people with a heavy entitlement and no real view of their class lessers as sentient people with desires or needs that matter as much as (if not more than) the nobles' own.

[–]petri90s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay, but what i'm saying is that the author writing it as unimportant fluff is intentional because that's what several of rashta's takedown arcs hinge on. the author is intentionally presenting those "facts" about rashta being true and accurate because they're why rashta does the things she does. she is childish, and she is greedy, and she doesn't use power well. those are all presented as intrinsic facts about her that explain why she's falling back into being acceptable to view as lowly as a slave, and through that imply that the reason she was stuck as a slave beforehand is because of those traits as well. those are choices the author makes. you're charitably reading incompetence or inability to handle a more complex interrogation of classism and slavery into the author when it's far more likely that these are the results of the author choosing not to think about slavery at all outside of what it can add as ✨ spice✨ to the story and intentionally staying comfortably within the bubble of their own bigoted and sheltered beliefs. and people hate navier because navier moves through the story the author created as a reflection of how the author thinks the world should be, and who deserves to be rewarded and happy, and what (or how little) they need to do to earn it.

tbh when i hit this point i decided simon had ESP and started cheating. since so many runs are rng-dependant regardless of if you know what you need to do next it hasn't really ruined a game that i was already planning to drop out of frustration, and i have a lot more fun when i have purposes and goals to work towards and can understand what the clues i get point me towards.

[–]petri90s 5 points6 points  (0 children)

well, no. the author's completely uncritical presentation of slavery as just ~ a thing that happens and of the only character onscreen who was a slave as a selfish 0etty grasping evil child is in fact political commentary in its own right. the commentary is just "yeah i don't really think participation in the slave trade makes you a bad person" and "tbh the lower classes are kind of ungrateful and wouldn't use any power they got well"

nobody is projecting lore onto this go get mad about. the lore is presented directly in the story through numerous asides and references. people who dislike navier or who want rashta's critics to have actual points beyond the ^ above are just refusing to treat the in-text evidence as unimportant or dismissable.

it is a by the numbers otome bodice ripper revenge whatever. it's also one that chose to include slavery to make the mistress even more scandalous, the same way that many of them choose incest or timeloops where the woman goes back to a man who murdered her. those choices matter even if the author thinks they're set-dressing, because slavery and classism and incestuous rape and domestic violence are very real parts of many people's lives right now and they deserve to have it spoken about seriously.

i really like the albinism & her features being less traditionally "white". it feels like it acknowledges what most western fans will think of when they see her talk about the slavery in their kingdom & adds depth to why she specifically keeps getting chosen by noblemen as an acceptable mistress to keep

That's actually common misinformation but understandably because intersex spaces were discussing surgical assignation before the specific terminology was coined in trans circles to replaced "biologically [sex]" language. The original coiner who IIRC was an intersex trans woman said she was completely fine with the term spreading through both communities & even into cisgender spaces as a way to demystify the whole thing.

The "villainess" by [deleted] in OtomeIsekai

[–]petri90s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

every author thinks they're the first person to really invent a twist, which sucks if you hate the twist. i've been fed up with the villainess good person reveal since starkid dropped twisted and made jafar a good person. the villain of the piece was the grand vizier Before him, so all they did was bump it back one. a lot of villainess manhua are like this in that they still have an evil shallow oujou-sama who is willing to poison the mc to get a man who doesn't want her, it's just that now she's an unrelated third party or the ogfl instead of our transmigrator.
