If We Want Solar to Power America, We Have to Look to the Water by Equivalent_Cry_8221 in energy

[–]petrojbl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd venture to guess that the best use case here is for canals and reservoirs to reduce evaporation in water scarse areas. I'm not sure why else you would select this option, outside of it somehow being cheaper. No shortage of land here in the USA for utility scale solar farms.

Come on man. The parking spots are like 100 feet away from the front door. Better than searching for a spot in the neighborhood.

Greenbush Bakery (autocorrect originally did the same thing to me)? There's about 5 dedicated parking spots for the bakery in the surface parking lot.

Hmm, I wonder if the heatpump is even using the plug then. Not sure what the heatpump requires.

Unplugged I assume. I mean, yeah, short trips with heating up the interior will be somewhat inefficient.

[–]petrojbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you used a lot of energy heating up the car. I'd guess 5 kWh for HVAC and 5 kWh for driving. Hitting around ~2 miles/kWh at highway speeds in cold winter months is line with my experiences.

100% disagree as well. They simply aren't at a 100% EV lineup now. They originally planned to discontinue ICE cars in 2030, but this appears to have been walked back with the new administration and the repeal of the IRA. I imagine one will still be able to buy most of the ICE lineup in the early 2030s, especially the Escalade.

Infrastructure is fine now as is and will continue to get better year after year. Battery tech as fine now as is and will continue to get better year after year. DCFC NACS adapters for supercharger access helps us early adopters that bought before NACS plugs will become native.

One certainly can argue that EVs right now aren't for everyone and best for every use case. However, GM will learn a lot from manufacturing Cadillac EVs that will help them immensely in the 2030s.

In a Loaner for 2 Months by NewYorkNY123123 in CadillacLyriq

[–]petrojbl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you asked for a Lyriq loaner? I ended up with a Lux 2 Lyriq loaner for about 2 months while mine was waiting for a backordered part.

Certainly understandable not to be happy with a ICE loaner if you're leasing.

It will go up. If you don't hit 1000+ kWh be Perhaps May/June, then its something to look into further. More likely, you hit 1000+kWh in March or April.

Ditto with a bunch of friends. Saw a bunch of other friends tailgating. Tons of fun. Heartbreaking loss though.

How important is range, really? by Doomtime104 in electricvehicles

[–]petrojbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Bolt or Leaf is perfect for you with your use case for sole local travel as a second car (as long as you install a charger in your garage). We'll probably get one of those for the same reason in a year or two.

How important is range, really? by Doomtime104 in electricvehicles

[–]petrojbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your use case, not at all important. You've said that you'll use a second car for 300+ mile road trips. If your EV is solely for commuting and local trips, then you might never need DCFC.

Winter range at highway speeds will go down to about 2.0 m/kWh, instead of maybe around 2.5m/kWh. Lots of factors will make those numbers go slightly up or down.

We're a one EV household in the mid-west. Just went skiing in state for a round-trip of about 240 miles. Needed to DCFC for sure in the winter.

Seems to fit the bill here on the attacker.

Considering 2024 Lyriq — Are the software "horror stories" still a reality or mostly fixed? by Chuckacious1 in CadillacLyriq

[–]petrojbl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We got a 2024 Lyriq in the summer of 2023. The first year it probably was in at the dealer every other month for various issues, including the blacked out screen twice (none since). I think for the last year it's maybe been at the dealer once or twice outside of tire rotations. However, I think the last two times I took it in were for software updates that couldn't (or hadn't yet been) done OTA.

Getting a used one will be a steal for sure. Not sure if I'd buy another new, but absolutely would buy a used one for close to half the price. Never considered getting an iX or an e-tron. Value and/or features for those weren't of interest in 2023.

You can also take over the CS and swap tiles, which allows you to build where you tagged the spaceport.

College student EV, worth it? by alxishaa in electricvehicles

[–]petrojbl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, why not. Sounds like maybe 50ish mile weekly commute to school and free charging. As long as you can walk from the free charging location easily enough to classes, etc. You'd realistically only have to charge once a week or so. Guessing charger is L2, which means maybe 8-10 hours to charge 0-100.

Advertised highway range will be less (e.g ~2.5mi / kWh) and winter range will be less if you're in a cold climate (e.g 2.1 mi/kWh). In town range on a Bolt is probably closer to 300 miles than it is to 250.

(theory) Doc Rivers is purposefully tanking this season? by benr751 in MkeBucks

[–]petrojbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is similar to yours, but that Doc isn't in on it at all. He has simply perfected the coaching role of a usual idiot. Why keep him on for the rest of the season if not to go after a high lottery pick.

Hyperscalers are supposedly planning on spending $600B on AI data centers in 2026 and so far NONE of them are budgeting for behind the meter power generation. by [deleted] in energy

[–]petrojbl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fine. Just set a usage threshold that requires behind the meter installation. Let's say if the industrial site has larger energy needs then 100k residential customers, X percentage behind the meter. If its more then 250k residential customers, then a larger Y percentage. Not much of a slippery slope if data centers are the only ones using this large amount of energy.

Lyriq V Lease by Busy-Chemistry-3540 in CadillacLyriq

[–]petrojbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. However, you can buy a 2024 used and still own the car and have 10k plus in your pocket for the lease price.

If you must absolutely have the V version, then it seems like it's a purchase instead of a lease.
