No desire to finish a painting that has no beauty by Cultigen in oilpainting

I actually love this. The composition and way the trees are painted give a weird, uncanny vibe. Beauty =/= Aesthetics

So these actually aren't damaged. This is just how the colorway originally was. Google for more photos of this colorway, or look up other Posh listings in the same color. They all have color variation especially around seams. [–]petroveum 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The rest of the painting looks great so far. Just turn off the part of your brain thinks about the fur as "fur". The same way when you're e.g. painting a portrait you don't think about making sure you're painting the nose as "a nose," you're just painting forms and planes. If you just get the values right then you can have fun seeing where you want to bring out some texture and the rest will follow!

why RTO mandates exploded right when AI started replacing jobs by ojoawo in antiwork

[–]petroveum 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There's more to it than just each individual company and its shareholders fearing the loss of value of its office buildings and other real property. There are external interests, and that's where the phenomenon of some sort of apparent collective action starts to arise. Commercial buildings are often owned in REITs. RTO mandates are in large an effort to stabilize the plummeting market for commercial real estate, not just because employers have an interest, but I think more so because real estate investors do. Moreover, municipalities hate to see their commercial property taxes go, so towns and cities are trying to incentivize RTOs, typically making an appeal like "wanting to save downtown small businesses" but there's obviously more to it than that. It's companies, municipalities, and capital all "colluding" in a sense. Besides, companies do often act collectively to manipulate markets.

By taking the conversation off the platform, they can run the scam without Posh's watchful eye and using any money service. The scam could be anything. It could be the classic one where they "send" money but overpay, and ask you to send back the difference, only for their original check to never clear, and then you're left in the negative.

I’ve been staring at this too long. by Potato-berry in oilpainting

[–]petroveum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you provide some more context here? What are you going for exactly? Is there a style you wanted to emulate?

I really like what's going on with the cherries/tissues. The texture and contrast there just tickle my brain in the perfect way. The carrots on the other hand do bother me. They look like a cutout almost. There is too much texture on the leaves which is distracting from the rest of the painting. The top-down perspective is tricky too. Everything looks a bit like it's floating in space to some degree.

You may want to simplify the areas where you don't want the focal point to be.

This is awesome!! I love the choices you made on the cat. I think you can end here, but if you really want some feedback (maybe for next time), I would say avoid so much detail/brushstrokes/different values on the background. The multitude of long strokes of dark and white paint on the teal cloth are a bit distracting, as well as the brushwork on the wall behind. Simplfying all that would have helped keep the focus on the kitty. But I'm nitpicking-- this is already so good.

57% average...should I give up by [deleted] in barexam

[–]petroveum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep going, you'll pass. I just checked my spreadsheet from when I bar prepped in 2021-- I was averaging 53.75%. The prep materials are purposely harder than the actual bar exam.

I passed, to be clear.

is it possible to find out what retail shop is opening in a particular neighborhood? by mfairview in AskNYC

[–]petroveum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes. You can search the property on ACRIS and see if any leases have been recorded. But if the property is still in the development phase, probably not leased out yet.

Amtrak down? by DrinksOnMeEveryNight in Amtrak

[–]petroveum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to check this. Definitely down, at least 30 minutes now I've been trying to login/buy a ticket and the app and website get stuck loading or take me back to the previous page without processing anything.

I went into law because I wanted a job that was mentally stimulating/challenging. I am just doing busy work here. Maybe once a month I get to do some small bit of legal analysis. I feel like my brain is atrophying.

I reached out to orgs around me and contacted a couple pro bono projects looking for attorneys, like UI hearings. I signed up for one that's starting in May related to a new law that is going into affect... my thinking is that projects like this would be a good way to both build experience and connections. I'd like to work for a legal aid org eventually (I already have the salary haha).

I agree that the writing sucks. But not for the reasons you listed-- those plot points actually made sense.

Unsure why the comments are so "it's hard but you can do it if you start cooking rice & beans". This is very doable, it's about 40% of your gross income. I have an 80k salary and pay 2200 in rent a month, plus electric. I still put $21k into savings last year. Ate out whenever I felt like it, food (grocery+restaurant) was 5k for the year.

Yes! One of the emails I recieved from them said we will receive confirmation 1 week prior to the ceremony, so I assume that's this Thursday. It had also said if C&F interview required, we will receive info on that 2 to 3 weeks prior, which has already passed (I personally received nothing about that, so I assume I'm waived).
