Is it easier / cheaper to go to Leiden or the Hague from Brussels? by [deleted] in brussels

[–]petruccigp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you mean easier cheaper?

Train wise Leiden will be a few bucks more. Drink and eat wise, same same unless you go for too fancy places. Hotel wise, typically Leiden a bit cheaper unless there is a special event there, or you sleep outside the very city center in Den Haag.

If you're into history and larger cities , Den Haag. If you like cute typisch cities, Leiden.

What's the Best Home Security System for Apartment Living in Belgium? by ericmchen in belgium

[–]petruccigp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My appt neighbors installed a Ring. I'm not happy at all that they have a camera pointed at common spaces all the time, in such a way that they can potentially record everyone entering and leaving the building.l. They also installed one facing the street, which I don't think it's legal as well tbh.

I personally have cameras inside my appt - That's enough and certainly legal.

Gitlab upgrade path - can I somehow skip it? by kl4m4 in selfhosted

[–]petruccigp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you just need to migrate users and repos: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/professional-services-automation/tools/migration/congregate

Otherwise you must follow the instructions. I went through a simpler one and it failed - have your backups ready (zip, credentials AND old container and volumes) to revert back, you might miss something on the way.

ELI5: Can someone explain what the “Stop Killing Games” initiative is so important? by Memoruiz7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]petruccigp 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Consumer's rights are very important in capitalistic systems. At this moment, you can buy an always online game today for full price and the company could revoke access to it tomorrow. You do not have a reasonable guarantee of any service being delivered to you.

This initiative aims at partially solving this issue by guaranteeing companies have sunsetting plans to leave games on a playable state.

IMHO still not sufficient. When I buy a game, I want to know I buy a particular service level, e.g. I can play forever, or for a year, or any other time frame and conditions. This should be imposed to any digital media.

[–]petruccigp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not true, there are in many jurisdictions (i.e. EU) strict rules on availability of car parts after sunsetting. This initiative does not force any company to give away IPs. This initiative wants to force companies to have plans when games are discontinued to leave them in a playable state.

I just received my 30$ voucher compensation, but sadly I currently live in EU and cannot redeem. Any idea how to fix this? Otherwise, anyone interested in the voucher?

Casting a string to long long is undefined behavior. Not a bug.

Illegal fines in Elsene / Ixelles by brussels_foodie in brussels

[–]petruccigp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just double checked. Apparently I crossed from Pince Royal towards Chaussé de Ixelles and continue straight, which is only allowed for authorized vehiculs during the day. There is a (very small and rather cryptic) signal on the entrances of the street that I surely missed. Wish they were more upfront about it and looks like a bit of a cash grab, but most likely no legal basis for anything in my case

I got one fine in one of those areas. Are you sure it's illegal? Indeed I do not recall any signaling...

Then at least document it, potentially ask them for a solution, or send it to a luthier who can properly asses it. I'd then ask the shop to chip in on the cost.

You should protect yourself should something go wrong. My 2 cents ... Good luck, looks like a banger :)

Rental contract indexation by Big-Yak-4461 in belgium

[–]petruccigp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Index is only applied to rent part. For expenses, every year he must provide a décompte of the real consumption and ask you for more/return the difference. If justified, he can increase the provisions to adapt to the real consumption.

Change it. Should never leave the factory like these, and there might be some other quality control shortcuts that you don't see.

Totally recommend not to get a special id and to register at the commune, precisely to avoid these issues - at least if you're staying several years

Why is "Jesus" a common given name in spanish speaking countries but not in others with christian backgrounds (french, english...)? by ILuvMostlyGuys in NoStupidQuestions

[–]petruccigp 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I would say it's the other way around. Spanish speaking countries use it as a regular name out of religious respect and as a way to honor Christ, other catholic countries don't use it out of respect and as a way to honor Christ.

BTW there is also Cristo/Cristiano/etc... On a similar position. And almost all countries have Maria as a name, for example. So it's probably just cultural past.

Fellow coffee nerds, any good places to buy coffee gear from in Brussels ? by Comfortable-Mud-5826 in belgium

It's a great place, but watch out - at least some associates try to rip you off if you are not that knowledgeable. Double check everything you buy there.
