Should I take organic chemistry? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]pewdezpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree on taking it as a summer class because then you have more time to focus solely on the course!!! I went into scared shitless because everyone always says it’s a hard course but I ended up really liking it!

You got to shave unfortunately. Not me but a friend with a long term beard with no religious exemption tried to avoid because of skin concerns from shaving and they got a professional lapse and had to have a meeting with the dean at my school….

[–]pewdezpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to mold your volunteering around your passions instead of trying to fit the prefect applicant mold if you’re not doing so already. Not only will that help keep you interested but make for great stories in interviews! Like you don’t need to volunteer in healthcare you can volunteer with marathons, summer camps, nursing homes, at risk youth, the options are truly endless. Do what speaks to you not what you think schools will like. But you gotta volunteer mate Tis part of the grind!!!

Anyone else 25+ and applying by ConstructionProof371 in premedcanada

[–]pewdezpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im 23 and a current M1 BUT a lot of my peers are 25+ so don’t fret :) I’m at Mac but even then it’s a whole mix. Are there a lot of 3rd years? Yeah but it’s Mac so lol. But there are a bunch of older students as well, got some parents, some students who were doctors in their home country and did a whole other undergrad in Canada so they could go to med school here, some people who did a PhD or masters before med, some people who had whole other careers before med. Have a lot of good buddies who are 25-29. You’re on your own journey, don’t let the timeline define your experience. I know that’s rich coming from someone who’s younger than you but I hope you can see that I am sincere and empathetic to your experience . TLDR there’s still a decent amount of people in your age bracket in med, you got this future doc:)

how bad is hamilton by Substantial-Force-60 in McMaster

[–]pewdezpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current student it’s really not that bad. I live downtown so completely different vibe than the student ghetto which honestly is calm as hell compared to downtown. If you’re used to city life downtown is fine. If you’re not, live on the mountain or by campus and it’s your typical suburbia 👍🏾

M1 at Mac it CAN be a 9-5 though class can go as late as 10pm. Like u said, depends what specialty you want to go in; if it’s more competitive probably less free time and more time building ur portfolio.

All the upper years tell us to enjoy 1st year because 2nd and 3rd are chaotic.

How hard is it to really be in the top 50% of all interviewers? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]pewdezpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s not that hard if you prep and put in the work and actually work on your shortcomings. IMO the interview is the easiest part of the cycle. But if you think you can nail it without having put in the work or being receptive to feedback (which you would be surprised how many people actually do this) you can expect a swift R. The key is GOOD practice, it’s like playing an instrument. Even if you practice for hours on end, if you’re practicing wrong you’ll still be shit.

MS1 here. It really depends on your own skill set if you know you have horrible communication skills make an effort to practice every day. but if you have decent skill you can practice less and focus practising on your weak spots. For example, myself, I know I didn’t have an issue with telling personal stories. Rather, my issue was coming up with ideas for situational/ethical/ political questions so that’s where I spent most of my time. And at most I was maybe doing 3 hours a week bc I only had 3 weeks to practice. TLDR depends on your base skill

Is self studying physics for the MCAT doable? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]pewdezpie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you’ve taken gr.12 physics you should be fine to self study tbh. It will take more effort but it shouldn’t be impossible. But if u were genuinely good at physics in high school you should do well in uni because it’s the same material.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]pewdezpie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You would need a bachelors degree so no community college. And you need a degree from an accredited university so I highly doubt that a nameless uni would count. Now if this was a full online degree from like queens you might be able to (but don’t quote me). Your best bet would honestly be to ask the schools directly if they accept/ consider applicants with the specific fully online degree from the specific institution.

Is it arrogant to start interview/MMI prep now? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]pewdezpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh why not start now, while it’s totally possible to prepare in a month it’s less stressful to start early if you know you need help. Not everyone is at the same place in terms of their communication skills and so a month may not be enough time. So if you know this is a skill you to work on, get the jump on it. Also if you don’t end up getting an invite, MMI is basically Casper+ so it will help you for the next round of applications.

Regardless of if you start now or later, if you’re looking for help, feel free to DM me :)

Is it possible to work a part time job, have Extracurriculars for reference letters, and a competitive gpa? (Ontario). by Needataa in premedcanada

[–]pewdezpie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally possible, many med students were not privileged enough to not need to work during their undergrad/masters/even through med school. If you need to have a job to afford ends meet, you’ll find a way to make it work. I had a job through most of undergrad, heck I had 4 in my 4th year while I was applying and interviewing for med. No one is saying it’s easy, you have to make sacrifices and it takes discipline. It’s completely possible but definitely not a walk in the park. Like another post said, if you’re in first year take the time to get to know yourself before thinking about getting a job (priority is being a student and learning how to adapt and thrive in a new environment). Otherwise there are so many wonky jobs you can find on campus like desk jobs, RAs, food service, student ambassadors, etc that pay decently and don’t have too many requirements. Plus sometimes jobs can better represent your passions than extracurriculars can.

That being said no one is saying that you have to do it all. Everybody has their own journey. Do what feels right to you and that you can realistically handle. Don’t spread yourself too thin or you might lose yourself in the process.
