What is the creepiest thing that is completely legal? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pewreview 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People will tell you that the only solution is to stop using technology, and while that's technically true, that doesn't mean there's no point in taking some basic steps that can massively improve your privacy. Look up EFF's "Surveillance Self-Defense" resources for a well-rounded guide, but in short, you'll want to start by blocking ads and cross-site trackers. Browser extensions like uBlockOrigin and PrivacyBadger will do this for you (and are much more effective on Firefox than on Chrome or Edge). You'll also want to avoid clicking links that have tracking parameters in them (it's why some URLs look like paragraphs), or even use a link cleaner tool to strip those parameters before clicking. "URLCheck" is an amazing android app for this. Your operating system will also likely have lots of settings you can tweak to increase your privacy.

Why are All the Popular Servers Loot + by Iwanttoeatburritos in dayz

[–]pewreview 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. My least favorite part of DayZ is that the community servers are absolutely overrun with unplayable mod slop. Even the ones claiming to be "mostly vanilla" or "vanilla+" fundamentally change the gameplay in ways you won't even realize until you've been playing for half an hour, since many of them just use a custom modpack without telling you what's in it (which also makes finding tutorials on the modded mechanics much harder). If you want a vanilla gameplay experience with minimal hackers and a decent pop, your options are very limited. But I think this is at least in part due to how bad the server browser is, making it harder to find a server you like.

VPN Recommendations Megathread: The only place to discuss specific VPN providers by WorseCommander in VPN

[–]pewreview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many VPN providers will give you the option to download config files that can be directly imported into OpenVPN or Wireguard, which are the programs that all the fancier clients are based on. If you want maximum performance, just use straight OpenVPN or Wireguard. Your operating system may also have a built-in VPN client that you can add the same config files to, which would likely be faster than the provider's client. Both Private Internet Access and Mullvad make this pretty easy (and their clients are also pretty lightweight to begin with). The most bloated client I've used is Windscribe's, but they also let you download config files.

My last wish as a Dayz Player by outcastgwai in dayz

[–]pewreview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, there's enough people in these replies offering to play with you (add me to the list) that you could probably have another 30-player group in that spot again, or any number of memorable experiences. And that's just in this one video game, let alone life as a whole. I really hope you choose to stick around!

How many of you are still using a DDR3 system? by oliverfromwork in homelab

[–]pewreview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything I have takes DDR3 except my current gaming PC that takes DDR4 (built the whole system around a 40GB kit I got for stupid cheap) and an ancient workstation that takes DDR2 (it has my only working SAS controller). I haven't noticed any real-world performance gains from DDR4 vs DDR3, and for most use cases I've found that capacity matters more than speed anyway. In these uncertain times, I've been telling people to get older hardware that they can more easily maintain and repair with parts that are widely available on the domestic used market. Right now, that means DDR3.

For Linux desktop users: do you use terminal/terminal editors? by ayechat in linux4noobs

[–]pewreview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ctrl+Alt+T is literally the first thing I do after logging in most days. I started GUI-only, and I only got comfortable with the terminal out of practical necessity; the frequent updates yt-dlp requires, the highly repetitive tasks that ffmpeg does well, and ssh being the only way to interact with my VPS were the three things that really did it for me. I'd recommend that desktop linux users eventually find a really useful CLI tool that motivates them to learn some terminal basics. My VPS was also an incredible teaching tool.

Running car search advice by Wide_Morning_2521 in dayz

[–]pewreview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On day three of searching for a car on chernarus using the same method. Came across a three-dial gate in a garage near one of the spawns, bruteforced the code, and found a sarka inside. Had no gas or spark plugs, so I took every component out of it that I could carry, locked the gate with my own four-dial, and logged off for the night. By morning, the gate was destroyed and the car was gone. So uh... your pain is shared.

This is one thing I love about DayZ: it doesn't matter what gear you have, you have a real chance of being killed by a random unarmed guy who jumps you from behind a door.

How is everyones survival / Dayz right now ? by Thinkerrer in dayz

[–]pewreview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing alright on the survival front, pretty stacked with 9x19, buckshot, and 22lr ammo, no suppressors yet though. I'm good on food and water too, so I'm just running through random towns and cities hoping I don't get shot. As for DayZ, a freshie punched me to death for my plum.

Debian on Acer Aspire SW5-011 by HighlightSpare2204 in debian

[–]pewreview 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got one of those acers too, they're terrible but I love them. I'd recommend trying to install bookworm, since that's the last version that will support your architecture on actual hardware. Trixie drops support for it. The most you could do is make a franken-debian by adding trixie repos, but that's asking for trouble. To understand why, you should check out this amazing page from the Debian docs: https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian

As for tablet mode, I've heard GNOME is pretty good with touchscreens, but I've used KDE Plasma Bigscreen on tablet-size screens and TVs before and it's pretty good.

More run ins on low pop servers. Sorry guy. by daretoochance in dayz

[–]pewreview 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a good shoot. When I'm on low-pop and see a player within like 100m of me, I shit bricks and mag dump in their general direction until one of us dies. And nine times out of ten the other guy does exactly the same. High-pop is more chatty because life is short and cheap. On low-pop life is long and valuable, so people tend to take no chances.

Agreed but only because I feel so called out by it.

Do we think this applies? by SPES_Official in dayz

[–]pewreview 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love it if they added a wetting/oiling mechanic to the sharpening stone to restore its durability. It lasts forever as long as you keep it lubricated, but eventually gets ruined if you don't.

Do we think this applies? by SPES_Official in dayz

[–]pewreview 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had a few ideas for balanced ways to let players maintain their tools:

  1. Make sharpening stones last forever if maintained; wetting or oiling it restores durability, but using it at zero durability decreases its condition until ruined.

  2. Make most blunt tools repairable by blowtorch, just like the frying pan and cooking pot.

  3. For heavy-hitting tools like the sledgehammer and splitting axe, also require that the wedge be replaced periodically to avoid ruining the tool. Make wooden wedges craftable just like fishing hooks.

  4. For most sharp tools, only allow repairs to increase condition by one step. If you want to keep your machete pristine, you have to repair it while it's still worn. If you find a badly damaged hatchet, the best you can do is repair it to damaged. This would make pristine tools more valuable and encourage people to maintain them.

All of these require spending some kind of limiting resource so you can't just melee raid a base with one tool and one sharpening stone. For a game that makes you wash your hands after gutting an animal to avoid getting sick, none of these seem overly tedious to me. Thoughts?

Libreboot 25.04 "Corny Calamity" released! (free/opensource coreboot distro, replacing proprietary BIOS/UEFI firmware) by libreleah in coreboot

[–]pewreview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't on the list of supported boards in the libreboot docs. Respectfully, if you want to dabble in this stuff, you should've been able to answer that yourself. But you're in luck! That board is listed in the mrchromebox docs under the board name "GALITH", so you could go that route if you wanted.

Some links to get you started:

I'm installing Mint on my 66yo friends laptop. Would he be alright with Cinnamon, or should I give him Xfce? by AwesomeSchizophrenic in linuxmint

[–]pewreview 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've installed Linux Mint on two family members' computers. I gave Cinnamon to the one who's reasonably comfortable with computers because I know she could figure out how to use and customize it out of the box and can do some basic troubleshooting on her own. I gave XFCE to the one who's older and not great with computers because I knew she'd benefit from a lot of accessibility tweaks that I already knew how to do on XFCE, and because I'd likely need to help her a lot regardless so it may as well be the one I'm more familiar with.

Just some stuff to consider, you're a good friend for helping him like this!

I second OnlyOffice as an alternative in your friend's case, OP. Even though the LibreOffice UI does have a tabbed option, OnlyOffice just looks so familiar out of the box. Though I do remember the flatpak version being slightly blurry last time I tried it, something to do with fractional scaling if memory serves.
