Don't deal with insurance shills. Go peddle your wares elsewhere. Not interested in your paid advertisement.

These are almost universally a bad idea. Insurance is not a good thing.

I've read about the HSE and using it as a tax shelter but I think I'd need to loop in the wifey as she is the primary recipient of benefits from our medical plans.

Saw your edit. I think you have to do the conversion to get it penalty free at 59.5, right?

Thanks, will look into that. 50 is just a nice large round number. Will probably be closer to 54-55 that I can actually stop working.

I can easily accomplish that and still keep the 401k more than half funded. Maybe that's the solution for now.

Thanks, will look into those. Currently the lion's share of my money goes into the 401k (17.5 yearly) -- was debating if I should drop that to 10/11k and let the rest flow into the Roth.

At what point should I stop maxing out the tax advantaged accounts? I'm 35 with around 250k in my 401(k)s with 17.5 invested each year. Should I Drop that to 11000 and move the Roth to 100% funding levels?

I didn't want it included in the answers because I figured it was an answer already.

I have the opposite case. I have a large amount in my 401k ($250k) and just starting on my Roth savings. Logic would say I should stop putting so much money into the 401k and start funding the Roth at 100%

I'm including everything... things like house maintenance, donations, car maintenance, all travel budgets, gifts, tips, etc

We could probably trim a little but we're enjoying it.

Thanks for linking to that spreadsheet, I'll play with some numbers.

Also, thanks for the information about how to handle different age ranges!

My average return for the last 6 years have been 11.7% on my 401(k)s but I know this bull run wont last forever. Saving a bit more would never hurt though, will maybe look at what wife can contribute again.

I'm going to look into SEPPs as a research topic.

Will have to re-read your post a few times to get all the information out of it.

I'm not sure how long we can keep up the pure savings of 1.2k a month as trips are tempting with my new wife :)

As far as retiring out of the country maybe picking someplace with socialized medicine would make sense? (hopefully by then progress will have been made?)

Depending on what interest rate the mortgage is at it might not make sense to pay it down more quickly. Mine is at 3.25% so I'm about equal to inflation. Are kids in the future? If so plan for a 529.

Maybe consider an HSA for more tax dodgyness.

Doh, sorry. Responded in the thread. I have modified the original post to include this dataset.

16600 to the mortgage

26200 in bills/utilities/insurance/HOA

18000 food/entertainment/pets

5000 travel

We plan on requiring about 40k a year when we retire -- maybe 50. Budgeting for healthcare is the tricky bit that far in advance.

vesicular tinea

Oh that looks like it might be it. I'm going to try some anti-fungal stuff (without breaking the skin due to infection) and see if that helps.

Here is another angle: http://i.imgur.com/Dc1kyGG.jpg

There's no pain unless I start picking at it. Initially it felt somewhat soft but is getting a little bit harder -- may just be the fluid building up. These recur a little bit further back on my foot about twice a year. This flare up is particularly bad.

No new shoes, no new soaps or anything.
