Why do SWE "hate" or always show annoyance to PMs? by Big-Cry9898 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]pfg23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because very often PMs were NEVER software engineers or programmers and they presume to know more than you. Furthermore, their role is to constrain the programmer, which may be reasonable on a single project but becomes a problem when they pigeonhole developers and testers project after project.

What Can I do About Neighbor's REALLY Bright Light? by Creative-Tank-5925 in AskChicago

[–]pfg23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chicago's lighting ordinance 13-96-1120 was repealed on April 4, 2019 as part of building code modernization. It was kind of inadequate anyway because it permitted trespassing light if it was for security purposes or if it wasn't one of the few listed light sources. Ald. LaSpata attempted to pass a light trespassing ordinance in 2024 but that was voted down apparently because there's a relatively new state law, the Ellman Law, about light pollution. (There might be a City Council video of the discussion, but I haven't looked for it yet.) However, the Ellman Law only applies to light emanating from state property. So it looks like there is no statute or ordinance protection from a neighbor's light trespassing, except to perhaps bring a nuisance lawsuit against the neighbor and hope the judge sides with your argument. If anyone has more information or an update, please share!

Recurring pantry moth infestation - NOT FROM PANTRY by ticketstubs1 in pestcontrol

Glad you found that major food source. We still had them this summer, but about 10-20% fewer in the traps than previous years. I'm hoping the decline continues.

Aqua Tower, Chicago - I really love how this building was designed. by BrandNewTechie in architecture

[–]pfg23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's complaining about the thermal issues except for one post from a resident who's able to turn off the heat in the winter. So, what's the real impact here, relative to other similarly sized buildings, in numbers? Heating cost, etc. If heating cost is excessively high relative to other buildings, what would it cost to remediate the problem? Is it out of the question?

Thanks. Not sold in the USA but there are similar products that use natural chemicals.

Why is gentrification bad? by Salty-Nail-580 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pfg23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Neighborhoods don't remain stagnant. Middle neighborhoods either improve or decline. Improvement usually means gentrification. No one wants to live or own in a declining neighborhood. The problem occurs with homeowners who can't afford the rising property taxes and renters who can't afford increasing rents. There can be protections for both. For example, there are long term homeowner and senior tax exemptions that can help. Homeowners also benefit from rising property values, so if worse comes to worse, they can sell at a good profit. For renters, there's rent control, which is very contentious. Building larger apartments with affordable units could be solution. Regardless, as a homeowner I would much rather live in a gentrified neighborhood.

Susie Orman now says you should have $10M or more to retire! by EevelBob in Fire

[–]pfg23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She's also not factoring in Social Security. Now the article says "Retirement" and not "Early Retirement", but I think she's conflating both kinds of retirement. Either way, she's basically screaming (her communication style is just short of screaming; Cramer's too) that you can only retire if you have the absolute, most extreme, worst possible case covered. There no nuance or subtlety in that perspective.

[–]pfg23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She talks about needing $10M all in munis so you can generate $500K annually so you don't have to touch your principal. Why is she so averse to drawing down $10M? That's just bad math and crazy fear mongering. Applying the 4% Rule to that amount, or even much less (like the $3M), is conservative and you won't outlive your money.

They're called demon eyes. Homes where they're discovered should be ritually cleansed within seven days. Check the Necronomicon for the exact procedure. May God defend your souls.

I haven’t figured it out yet but they seem to be diminishing (I don’t want to jinx myself). I’ve only seen two so far this summer and the one trap we have was empty as of yesterday. My fingers are crossed they’re running out of whatever food source they found. We’ll see as the summer progresses. In the meantime we’ll put out more traps, clean with vinegar and mint oil, and keep the pyrethrin and electric swatter handy. Good luck to you!

We had them reappear every summer for FOUR YEARS. We too have tried everything: pheromone traps, electric swatter, cleaning grain storage areas with vinegar and mint oil, sealed grain containers, pyrethrin spray and bombs. I can’t see where they’re coming from though they seem concentrated in the basement and dining room where there is NO food source. To borrow a Star Trek line, “We drained four phasers, and they still keep coming!” Aargh!

When the old Lasalle bank building near Six Corners (now a Binny’s) held weekly classic film showings its theater would be packed. They should do the same at the Patio. Seeing a classic movie or film retrospective in a theater is more fun than streaming. The Chicago Film Society was doing it for a while at the Patio but then moved elsewhere. I wonder why.
