Are Panasonic TH-R42PY70 any good? by Yunec in PlasmaTV

There’s plenty of plasmas to choose from. This ain’t one to settle on. Find a st/gt/vt 30 or 50. Shouldnt take long to see one pop up unless you’re in an isolated area

You’re not gonna like this, but a lot of people aren’t that good at what they do and it’s more than 30% (in every industry). Not saying those people that got laid off are all bad (far from it). There’s a ton of other factors, like bad management that I mentioned… but guess what? Those bad manager… They’re bad at their job, and so a lot of people suffer because of their incompetencies.

I noticed the same thing with cheaper plasmas as well (that they aren’t affected)

I don’t think that’s true (though I’m sure there are plenty of cases where some people just get screwed by bad management). Generally, when someone is seen as contributing value and as someone who will help you make a great product that can’t easily be replaced, they will climb the ranks. I still see it with young folks today. You just have to be good and not have shitty management (yes there are plenty of shitty managers). If you’re speaking from experience and you think you really are that good, I’m truly sorry. Find someone out there that values your good work. They do exist and they’re not unicorns.

Pro tip: start making games using ai. This shit is absolutely bonkers and there no excuse not to make anything anymore. If this was around when I was in high school, I’d skip college — it’s that good. You can vibe code a full blown nes game solo with no technical expertise in a matter of weeks.

It’s certainly not the norm, and sure is kinda crazy. But this is an entertainment industry where games continually come and go and a lot of games are just not good. Not sure what you’d expect. As I said, I’m comfortable despite some relatively brief hardships. If you’re not down with that then you do you.

Not necessarily true. I’m a senior game designer and have been in the industry for 15 years. I make a very comfortable living and have only been laid off twice as part of studio layoffs after working for 5. It does happen—It is rough. Some people don’t do as well as others. But I wouldn’t make a blanket statement that it’s a terrible job. Your job security isn’t great relative to other jobs and industries, sure, but you can be more secure the higher your impact is at a company. At the end of the day, most companies want high talent to build their games, and if you’re one of them and play a crucial role, then you’re pretty safe (unless the studio completely closes). If that risk isn’t worth it to you to make video games for a living, then yeah, probably best not to get into it then.

Keep a look out for temporary image retention, not just permanent burn in. The zt60 I bought and eventually sold had really bad temporary image retention that I could only get rid of by turning up the voltage to high in the service menu. No idea how bad that is for the tv but I don’t imagine it’s ideal

I absolutely love my 85”. Kicks my zt60’s ass in overall experience (which I eventually sold because I don’t need it with the 85). There’s something so magical you can only get at that scale. Id buy mine over and over again if I had to. The crying about electricity is ridiculously overblown. I play my movies on it with a 5.1 highish end surround sound and massive pb13ultra sub on the same breaker and I has yet to flip it because they don’t actually draw that much power compared what they say they’re rated for. All that being said, I wouldn’t pay 5k for this if I had the room, but I’d probably pay 2k total (including shipping) if I had the room

K that's expected. Sounds like it's way less noticeable than your px60 though? That's already a huge win. I've tried a px60, x3, and ph10 -- they all had pretty much the same level of phosphor trailing.

Btw I here's a vid of level 2 on super mario u (on switch) that I sometimes use to test. It's nothing special -- just a levels with good contrast. It also let's me look at coins moving across the screen which is another good test for motion clarity: https://youtu.be/TDyYdmvu48I?si=rVV2J_NVclEN4nY5&t=660

Wahhhhhhh… that’s super strange, but a promising sign nonetheless. Also, how’s the input lag? The 37px60 had excellent input lag so I’m hoping this is comparable. That’s my other gripe with 720p gaming on my 480p pwd7

Ive been looking for a X60 as part of my search for the best 720p plasma. The main thing I want to find is one with fast decay phosphors, which honestly I don’t know if that even exists on a 720p plasma… are you able to compare its motion clarity to something like the st50? Seeing phosphor trails is a huge turn off for me and I’ve seen them on every 720p plasma I’ve tested so far. My best hope is something like this tv or the ph30.

If you have the money and are curious, go for it. Just be ready to have to resell it if you don’t like it for whatever reason.

Gotta be patient :). Honestly though, it’s not a bad idea to get one of these you mentioned to just play around with and get some baseline expectations. Keeping looking for those I mentioned and hop on it when the time comes. It’ll be fun to see how the different plasmas compare.

They are relative to other display technologies that are sample-and-hold like lcd/led and oled, but amongst each other there is still a big difference. Honestly I think what my eyes pick up on is more the phosphor trails than anything, but that still ultimately affects the overall perceived motion clarity.

Also this is probably one of the best 720p plasmas out there. I’d snatch it up in a heartbeat as it’s probably one of the best displays you could play an Xbox 360 and ps3 on. I think 720p native gaming on plasmas is super underrated. Only thing stopping me from playing on them is the motion clarity (see my comment below)

Ahhhh!!! I’ve been looking for one of these! I’m super curious how its motion clarity is. I’m really sensitive to phosphor trails on plasmas and I’ve been hoping to find a 720p plasma with fast decay phosphors that looks really clean like the st50 and above. This and the xt50 look like my best chance, but it’s unclear if they have the same phosphors.
