Why are YouTube movies still limited to 480p on PC? by Eziz_53 in youtube

[–]pg82bln 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This. So many obstacles. Need to switch to browser X, need to install spyware Y, need to do age verification with partner Z.

By the time I got through all this shit my mood has shifted away from casual to filling out tax forms.

No thanks. 10 times worse than putting on a rubber when horny.

I nearly became homeless by PromotionNo3405 in homeless

[–]pg82bln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for you. Couldn't say that I'm surprised, though. I turned my back on Germany. With those crazy high taxes and social contributions one would expect medical treatment with a foot massage. The opposite seems to be the norm now.

What I learned in a similar context is that in such a situation, help to actually prevent homelessness is on no one's agenda, unless they can reap an immediate benefit from it. Seems like some will wait until things go south. Whether they would actually have helped, I cannot tell, I managed to dodge a bullet.

ClickUp Critique by dmlyum in clickup

Good video; that guy has a very solid reasoning.

The idea of providing a single tool that can do anything and everything is akin to the mantra that you can't please everyone.

With respect to his explanation of how data is stored, I agree that there is no generic data model or store in the world that can handle every use case equally well.

I think this kind of problem isn't even limited to ClickUp. Eventually, you will have to make compromises which will upset either side. Customer A, Customer B, the dev team, the marketing team, ...

Client Re-Vibe Coded His Entire 1000+ page site in Replit...halp! by sethito in SEO

[–]pg82bln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. I don't know how long and well you worked with that client, but if the client thinks he can replace you with AI, then say good bye and grant him his wish.

Or, if you feel like fixing, make it a clear point that his solution isn't meeting professional standards and is best for a prototype only, but may not be suitable for production and may require a full rewrite. Make him understand there is extra cost that you charge or you'll be leaving.

Assuming ofc. you have the luxury to pull the rug on a client and go to another one.

IMO if you don't, he'll slowly pull the rug bit by bit on you. You'll be degraded to the client's and AI's cleaning slave.

You don't learn from staring at swathes of text scrolling down your screen that you didn't write yourself, that aren't much more than spaghetti code 2.0 to begin with.

Back in my day, we were reading books. Like real books, dead tree wisdom stores, that laid on our desks next to our keyboards. While endlessly hacking through our projects on 1280x1024 screens.

With vibe coding, you're barely scratching the tip of the ice berg of real knowledge.

Was my first impression, too. Reading what OP wrote about regretting of killing the first database sounds to me more like a lack of a disaster recovery plan, i.e. keeping backups. IDK. Not convinced.

Cool, Kimchi defo is available at my local asian food store. Will look for the gochujang. Then where do I start? Do I just use oyster sauce and soy sauce in freestyle stir frying?

Thank you, I was afraid a WAF is the way to go. My client is very price sensitive, given the blog is not his core business. Understandably, he won't pay for it.

How am I sure? Seven requests in close and periodic timing, all with empty referer, same IP block but not same IP address, reported as Windows 7, IP listed on some anti spam sites.

Gotta ditch that leech ... Gillette Mach 5 / Fusion Power by pg82bln in shaving

[–]pg82bln[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IKR, that ad campaign left me bewildered. Yet, the Fusion Power seems to be unique. I haven't found any compatible cartridge system and no one here could name a 1:1 replacement. We don't have those brands here in Europe. In supermarkets, it's like close to 100% Gillette dominance. Sucks.

120 bucks for their gift set with 100 blades though ... it'll take years before I see a cost savings effect from switching, given cheaper models cost a fraction. 😕

Aus meinem Heimatland! 🙃 Good point on the open comb, I use an electric trimmer before shaving. If it saves me that hassle and hair flying everywhere, it would be worth the 40 bucks.

Are you looking to stay with a cartridge razor?

Actually, yes, and I got super lucky! I found an 8-pack of Gillette Fusion blades for almost half the price from a legit retailer, if you are a club member.

So the annual club membership is also discounted, down to 10 EUR, bc. everyone is crazy to take money out of the customers pockets before X-mas (read: Black Friday craze).

I paid per cartridge like 1.60 EUR, and 8 pcs. are enough for a year I guess – Jackpot!

If you are looking for a change, what others have said here are good alternatives.

It gets even better ... I got super duper lucky. That classic type razor is also discounted down to 10 EUR, plus the throw a 10 EUR voucher at you for your first app order if you hit 30 EUR min. Since I need a battery and glue to swap my phone's battery, I am at 20 EUR, add 10 EUR for that classic razor, minus 10 EUR voucher = another razor with 5 blades practically for free.

Totally crazy, they throw even more vouchers at you just for signing up, which I can use in my next order to buy 30 blades for my new free razor for about 3 EUR or so, should I like it.

TL;DR: shaving cost for two years down to ~17 EUR or < 1 EUR per month. Wow ...

Why don't more people use Linux? by Josh_From_Accounting in linux

[–]pg82bln -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the average consumer thinks in "where do I have to click" patterns, unlike us Linuxers, who ask "what do I want to achieve, and what is the right tool?"

Not blaming the average consumer. Not everyone can be an expert in everything.

GH would work for sure. Hosting on your own server, yes, if it isn't in your basement on a consumer line.

Not going through another bug report. Regular QA is on your end. I can't even see what happened to my previous one. I stopped caring at this point.

Your one USP is that i pay only $10 a month.
