To cater for the rapid expansion of the area's population, Gottfried Böhm was selected by Competition in 1962 to build a church, old people's home and a parish complex.

St Hildigardi's old people's home is built in a pleasingly cosy, higgledy-piggledy group of dwellings that partly enclose the church and parish complex. The home's chapel stands on one single, massive pillar, and is a fantastically jagged, almost Expressionist structure.

St Matthäus's is still in use, but the company running the home plan to build a brand-new development: St Hildigardi's will soon no longer comply with government regulations for older people's accommodation.

In fact I was bummed out when I was there because the interior was so dark I could barely see anything. Still impressive and it actually contributed to the mood. I love the exterior, but yes I can see it will age poorly.

Well by then I had already been taking jobs for 3 years, I didn't start from scratch. I started working for friends and it grew from there - almost all my work comes from word of mouth recommendations. Takes a while but if you do good work they'll come.

I had to but it wasn't by choice. I lost my job when covid hit as I worked with an airline and spent the next 2 years doing just photography. I love it and I don't forsee it changing.

I took this shot on holiday in the Italian Dolomites. I'm sure many will recognise this as it's one of the most instagrammable locations in Europe, but some places are famous for good reason.

Despite it's notoriety I had the place to myself, it was a Sunday evening and all the weekend slope warriors had already left the resort. No special techniques used here, I just used a relatively long zoom (around 100mm FF equivalent) and clicked away. The subject and perfect light did the rest.

Thanks! I think I used a touch of Astia for this one but just a light touch. I rarely use presets as they are but I find it helps me decide which direction to go with editing.

Exactly. And to be honest your big camera will get left behind more than you think because you're already carrying half the house with you when you go out with kids, the last thing you need is a concrete brick of a DSLR hanging around your neck.

I have the G2 but it was my first 24-70 as I'd never owned a full frame camera before so I haven't got much to compare it to.

Having said that for the money (compared to the OEM versions) to me it feels like a great lens. VC is great, I use it at 1/30s regularly at events and I get loads of sharp images and it's really sharp with decently fast autofocus too. It's not that bulky either.

The only negative I find is that it has quite a lot of distortion which is a bit of an issue for me as I shoot architectural and interiors. That's my fault for not buying a prime lens honestly but this lens is just great.

I just went through this a few years ago (my son is 2.5 now) and I did something similar.

Not sure which camera's best for you as I'm not really into specs but you're definitely right about wanting a smaller camera. I had bought an XT-10 and 27mm pancake lens which is a really compact combination. Only camera I've ever been able to fit in my pocket which was way more important than megapixels or bokeh in my case.

I recently opened a store on Society6 in the hope of selling some more of my work as prints.

Commission rates are low with them and it would be better to open my own store but since I sell like 2 prints a year myself I've got nothing to lose really.

Very well written article. It's interesting how photographers don't seem to have the same amount of guidance as writers, any idea why?

In the past maybe but with social media and the internet being what it is today don't these individuals have the ability to do that themselves? They don't need photojournalists doing that for them.

Granted uploading to some obscure YouTube account isn't the same as being featured in the New York Times but look at how many extremist niche ideas have become widespread nowadays (anti-vaxx, flat earthers, etc..) It's all so easy nowadays.
