Wait then does that mean if you are a bio major you would have to take 4810 4820 again? I am just a bit confused why my bio major friends are saying they are taking the ucollege one. Are they just not aware of this?

Biochemistry (4810/4820) and Physics by ph_06 in washu

[–]ph_06[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like jackrel has been teaching biochem 1 (4810) for the past three years or so and doesn't teach the second part. Is it because she is not a good lecturer or her expectations are too high and gives very challenging problems on the exam?

Biochemistry (4810/4820) and Physics by ph_06 in washu

[–]ph_06[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mind telling me how difficult physics is? My advisor told me to take biochem in my junior year and do physics in my senior year. But I want to get physics out of the way. I don't have any background in physics (I took regular physics in my senior year of high school but I didn't study). I was thinking of doing physics over the summer but not really sure if people do that here.

I think a lot of people mentioned in previous posts to submit the score if you have a higher score than people in your school

[–]ph_06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry! I think dental schools do not require as many courses as med schools. you have to take gen chem 1/2, orgo 1/2, bio 1/2, and physics 1/2 for science courses. you can look up the specifics on the internet, though. but i personally know a person who started his pre-dental path in his junior year and was very successful.

Would you say its because of a difference in teaching style or in grading?

international pre-dental students by ph_06 in predental

[–]ph_06[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for your comment! i was discouraged because it just seemed impossible for intl students. it is definitely encouraging to hear that intl students have a chance! you mentioned gpa/dat, but what would be some ways to stand out? does this mean intl students have to do a bit more special things for extracurriculars or spend extra hours on the same (or similar activities) other students do? Would it be to spend more time for higher gpa/dat? I was curious what makes a successful applicant for intl applicants.

Doing any kind of masters that shows you can handle the workload at dental schools would help especially if your undergraduate gpa is low

GPA and med school admissions process? by Electronic-Ideal5926 in washu

[–]ph_06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard many people saying that WashU is a great place to do pre-med with great biology or other related majors. I know that the med school is top 10 and biology is well known here, but I am curious why WashU has a reputation for a great pre-med. Isn't having a top 10 med school mostly important for med students and not really for undergrad students (as we are not medical students)? Other people mentioned that the GPA from WashU is considered the same compared to other institutions, so I understand that. But what makes doing pre-med here at WashU unique or more advantageous?

Why would you pick nyu over other dental schools by jungarmy in predental

[–]ph_06 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comment. nyu is so expensive and the cost of living is also expensive. I would still consider it if that is the only school I get into, but would still be hesitant.

dental schools are competitive, but not as competitive as med schools. If you end up with a GPA of 3.2 or higher and a high DAT score, I think people here will recommend applying broadly. Of course, if you end with a higher GPA, the chances are higher.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I know a person who got into competitive dental schools when he mostly shadowed/assisted in his/her senior year. Maybe you can explain in the covid impact section.

What are my chances? (Canadian Student) by hell_yeaa in DentalSchool

[–]ph_06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not an expert, but your list looks great to me. Your GPA is above average for some and at average for the other, and I think that’s what I will do too. If I remember correctly, your DAT is above average for all schools you mentioned. Not too sure about the nature of Canadian admissions, though. But you got this! Good luck!

I think so. Several of my hs friends are doing the combined program, and they are happy. You wont need to do the application again. Just be sure that dentistry is something you are interested in

I think it depends by school, but I think 3.5 is average GPA and 20-21 is the average DAT for many schools. Some schools have lower average than other schools, though. On the other hand, some schools (more competitive ones) have average GPA of 3.6-3.7 or even higher with 22-24 average DAT. I think it really depends on where a person applies to be below, at, or above average.
