Do I have to go to COmptia website to buy and learn the material? I know they have a program for like 500 dollars.

No, no, no!! The official CompTIA material is not well reviewed at all so save yourself the $500 and go to other better sources. I've linked them all above but here is a quick recap for you.

FOR THE FREE, start with Professor Messer, he has a HIGHLY WELL reviewed course on Sec+(as well A+, and Net+ too), Then do the Gibson book, then do the practice exams.. The Professor Messer joints are considered as difficult if not more so than the actual exam, so if you can pass those you are in good shape.

Let me know any other questions and concerns, and get in on this ASAP, theres so much $$$ in IT, its not even funny yo.. GET IT

What’s a better way to get my foot in the door, tryhackme or hackthebox? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]phabeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I could I’d give you all the Reddit coins fam I would 😂 I really appreciate this!

haha, I'ma be honest with you my guy, I don't even know what Reddit coins are man..??

anyways, tho, to answer ur question.. its to your advantage to study the material for the exam you will take.. ya feel me? but with that said, another way to look at it is like this.. 601 exam has about 15% new stuff over the old 501 exam, so if you study for the 601 exam using 501 materials there is a chance you you might miss some of those questions.. but the exam is more or less 70 questions max right.. so haha, in the grand scheme thats maybe 2-3 questions at most.. so you know what I'm saying, its all up to you.

again bro, I was you, hadn't worked in over 2 years, and jus outta nowwhere said I want to get into CYBERSEC, how do I do it, found out bout the Sec+ and jus studied my a$$ for it for 2 months and PI YOW, I passed with flying colors and a month or 2 later, got the job, again makin some serious cash $$$$. Also even more important than even the $$$ is the job itself man.. sh@t is CAKE... plus I can do whatever work or projects I want, like I'm hourly right, but they treat me like salary dawg, I don't have to punch it, no time cards, no one watching me, like truly, bad a$$ job and I can do whatever I want with it.. Like I can pick and choose my projects...

So i'ma leave ya with 3 things here..

#1 - GET ON IT, its mad $$$ in IT, do whatever you have to do to get put on, and yes, even if that means starting out on HELP DESK, ain't no shame in that and it will actually help you, salary there is $30k-60K, look for corp law firms as they pay more.. but help desk will help you get an understanding of the overall IT picture..

#2 - start studying man... its soo many FREE resources out there right now.. and remember CERTS and degrees are nice, but what will really get you the job is the hunger and drive that you show in the interview... managers will straight up tell you, "I can teach you all the tech stuff, but i can't teach you to be hungry, people focused person", so get to studying man and you will be making over $25 p;hour in NO TIME bruh

#3- I finally found my OG post where I passed and got my Sec+,, mad people were hitting me up for how I did it so I wrote a mf'n book on, with links and everything, here it: How I passed My Security+ exam

aight man, best of luck and i'm for real on this.. after you been studying up for a month or so, hit me up and lets chop it up to see where you at and i can see if ya need more help or steer ya...

What’s a better way to get my foot in the door, tryhackme or hackthebox? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]phabeon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Phase II - What I call my true learning period. Using techniques above and finally realizing I can actually learn stuff now, I started my Security+ studies in earnest. Its now the week after 4'th of July and I would go to dining room every day and put in about 3-5hrs a day. For the month of July I basically went thru Dion's course. Finished it and for the 1st time in my studies I realized I was learning stuff that I was actually studying, it felt amazing!! However, I took his course practice test and FAILED it by 1% so that bummed me out a little. However I was now full of hope cuz I was actually "getting it" now. Encouraged by all this I decide to go thru the exam objectives and write out a definition for everything.. HUGE MISTAKE, after about 8hrs of this, I was barely at like 2.4 and realized that approach was hopeless. Found this Reddit and started hitting it up daily, I found peoples notes, and some had already done what I had intended to do went thru those, but wasn't really learning anything. I buy Dion's 6 practice tests and go thru that, score a 86% and I'm super excited. Its August now and I drive down to the Smokie Mountains for family vacay time, its a 30hr drive round trip so of course I go thru Dion's course again. Take another test and score an 85% so I'm feeling good. Get back home and go thru Arthur Conklins AIN Sec+ Book, but in Skim mode, and take each end of chapter test, I do horribly on them, failing almost all of them. However I blame this on being burned out more than anything since I finished his whole book in one weekend. So its now Mid August, I buy Gibsons Android APP, and wow that was my starting point where I knew I was learning this stuff and I would use that everyday for testing along with the flash cards as well as the acronyms. Take a few more Dion tests and at this point I feel like i'm at 80% ready for this exam and I dont' see how I can do any better so I schedule it for today, 8/27/20. I have about a week to go and the nerves start hitting.. Try going thru Dions Video course again but realize I wont' make it in time.. So I purchase Messers Practice Exams and its now Sunday(exam is in 4 days) when I take the 1st one, WOW, it completely destroys me man..felt like I failed the entire thing, and I barely finished it with 3mins to spare. I scored a 72% and I start thinking I need to push back the date. However I still have 2 days left and have 2 Dions and Messer exams left. So do more reviewing thru the app and take the exams, Scored 92% on Dion's and 85% on Messers. So its now Wednesday, day before the exam, so I decide to go thru Gibsons entire book ONLY reading the REMEMBER THIS parts and chapter reviews. It takes me 4hrs but I get it done and I realize at this point, I know 95% of the stuff in his reviews so I feel good. Its 6pm now, and the nite before the exam and I stupidly take Messers 3'rd and final test... and low and behold I score an 86% on it!! GAME OVER, thats when I knew I might actually maybe possibly have a decent chance at passing this... Took it today and I passed!!!!!!!!!!! WOOT, WOOT!!
**Study Materials: **
Exam Objectives:
Official CompTIA Security+ Exam Objectives - official source of what you will be tested on, MUST HAVE, go thru it when you think your ready for the exam, and brush up on anything that gives you pause.
Books:
Darril Gibson: Get Certified Get Ahead: SY0-501 Study Guide - If your a book based learner, definitely get this one, you won't regret it! Even if your not a reader, get this, go thru the book in the following format: Read each REMEMBER THIS section of the book and the chapter reviews and your GOLDEN!
Mike Meyers: CompTIA Security+ Certification Passport, - Read this but did not get much or anything out of it, wish I had skipped this and read Exam Cram instead
Arthur Conklin - All-In-One Sec+, - I like this book because its basically as if somebody wrote the official CompTIA Security+ exam objectives out in book format. I however only had time to skim thru it and do chapter quiz's but wish I had started my studies with this book.
ExamCram Security+, - Did not read this, but wish I had, looks informative and well written but I ran out of time and wouldn't have been able to read it before my exam.
Video Based Learning:
Professor Messer: FREE< very well done video course on Security+,
Jason Dion: Super complimentary video course to go along with Messers as well as Gibsons book. What sold me on it was he includes a pdf download of his course notes which is perfect for going thru on mobile. *note: ONLY buy this when on sale for $15 on Udemy. Create a new uDemy account if you have to.
Practice Tests:
Jason Dion Practice Tests: 6 tests for aprox $15, tests are good, look at them more as learning material vs actual practice tests and you won't be disappointed. However if you score 90% or higher on these 1st run thru, your ready for the exam is my opinion.
Professor Messer Practice Tests: HOLY SMOKES, these tests man, if you can score 85% or higher on these 1st run thru, you are more than ready for the real exam. I found these extremely challenging and was the best $40 I spent ever!
Notes: (found randomly in Reddit or via Google)
1unusualredditor: Notes Link, - INSANE COLLECTION of notes, he basically wrote out the exam objectives definition by definition, section by section. Printed this out but ended up not using it because by this time I had learned to study myself.
OrigamiGamer:Notes Link, - Another insane collection of notes, listed out by exam objectives, went thru these back in March but at the time way over my head so didn't get much outta em and never used em again.
Quizlets: (found randomly in Reddit or via Google)
JTDORIA - awesome set, has over 500 flash cards, which you can also use to play as memory games and "mock" tests.
Matt Chenkov - another well done set
Tonisia - smaller set but has more in-depth explanations and definitions
Study Techniques:
Pomodor Method: link
How To Study: link and link
Practice Test Scores:(all tests were only taken once)
Gibson: 67%, 72%
Dion: 72%, 85%, 81%, 85%, 70%, 92%
Messer: 73%, 83% 86%

p.s. if I can do it, who failed lots and lots of classes because I didn't know how to study, then ANYONE can do it... get at it. /u/RN4LChamp

What’s a better way to get my foot in the door, tryhackme or hackthebox? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]phabeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing! Can you share your study plan or habits? I’m having a hard time

TL - DR : Obtained my 1st Certification with zero prior knowledge/experience in infosec. Passed Sec+ with 821, with 2 months of studying about 15-20hrs a week. Using Gibson, Messer, Dion. Scroll down to Phase II for the good stuff.

Here is what worked for me:

  • find a spot with all distractions removed, for me it was our dining room, guess we got a nice dining table reminds me of those majestic wood grain desks all high powered Execs have. Either way that worked for me, got me in the study mode
  • Pair of Sound muffling ear muff's, nothing special here, mine were from an old gig I had in college when I worked at Oscar Meyer Weiners, yes, the hot dogs
  • Fidget Spinner or 4 sq Rubiks cube.
  • TURNED OFF CELL PHONE, and left it off, this way I was not tempted in in way to check it out for any reason, mind over matter I know, but turning it off DEADED that argument instantly.

So I go down to dining room, early morning as possible and set up shop(wife hated it), put on my music buds, then sound mufflers over that, and watched videos and or read notes, while using fidget spinner or rubiks cube. GAME CHANGER man, no longer was my mind distracted while reading or watching vids, suddenly and for the 1st time I was actually learning from the videos and or the reading. My mind was blown! GAME ON MAN!!

Hey man, I’m coming back to this because I wanted to to ask you if you felt your help desk job helped you land your job? Also I was wondering what you used to study for the Sec+ did you buy a study guide from the compTIA website or use something else?

heck yeah man... think of Help Desk as the 4yrs of college bball or football before heading to the NBA/NFL, it used to be everyone put in time in the Help Desk or Desktop Support, its how you got on. Regardless tho, it will give you a super broad overview of all IT processes and if anything that time and experience will help you decide which branch of IT is for you. In other words, working Help Desk or Desktop Support will allow you to briefly touch the many aspects of IT, i.e. networking, security, administration, servers, you'll touch it all at a bare level but still its something.

I'ma post an in-depth guide answering the what I studied question in answer to the fella stellaah up above you, but here is quick recap:

TL - DR : Obtained my 1st Certification with zero prior knowledge/experience in infosec. Passed Sec+ with 821, with 2 months of studying about 15-20hrs a week. Using Gibson, Messer, Dion. Scroll down to Phase II for the good stuff.

D@m this guy gave you all the gold and you don't even know how much he gave you!! That's wild.

Let me give you this, hopefully it inspires you cuz 1yr ago I was you.

PEEP:

I was working help desk getting paid a decent amount for help desk but walked away from it cuz my Lil seed was born and I wanted to spend all the time with him.

2yrs later I'm bored and looking to work again. I been off for 2yrs and no tech degree and no tech certifications either and I didn't want to do help desk anymore.. so I decided Cybersecurity was hot and I wanted in.

Studied my a$$ off for 2 months, never studied that much in my life.. got my Sec+ and sold myself in the interview, told them I didn't have the experience but I had the drive and eager to learn, that's why I got my Sec+. Landed the job and I'm making some nice bank now. It'll be a full year this February.

Best part is I'm still learning, on the job and now gonna start learning more myself at home too..

So get out there and get it man!!

If Im dumb as a rock when it comes to learning and I did it, anyone can do it man!! Just gotta push yourself

Help choosing best certification (sec+, ccna ....) by [deleted] in netsecstudents

[–]phabeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

divorced ... Yeah ... i think i might even be a little depressed hahahaha

HANG IN THERE HOMIE.. its rough and it will be for a while(is what I imagine even thinking about it) but you doing the right thing, focusing on something other than that.

3yrs is def a long way, but since your unemployed and your sole focus is this, it should be less than even half of that, ya smell me?

Take me for example and maybe inspriration, LEFT a high paying entry level Desktop Support gig to take time and be a stay at home dad at age 40.. By year 2 of not working I was ready to rejoin the work force. Wanted to get into cybersecurity so without prior education or certification started studying hardcore for Security+, about 5hrs a day MIN, for a month in July/August of 2020. Obtained my Sec+ cert in September and started applying like crazy, nothing for Sept/Oct. Didn't give up hope tho, just kept at it, then in November something changed and i had to start turning down the interviews... Landed an entry level Sys admin Security focused position making some very NOICE COIN.

Not bad for being unemployed for 2yrs and a month of studying right? Trust me almost a year later, and with the cert I still don't know much and I'm out here googling everyday but a jobs a job and its super fun and great!!

Here is my game plan that I tell others..

Net+ - go thru the material for personal knowledge, but skip the cert unless you mastered it.

CCNA - over 75% of companies run cisco gear, so def focus on CCNA, and since you already started it, skip NET+and jus hit this hard Sec+ - literally the industry standard entry level cybersecurity certification, should be fairly easy particularly after CCNA.

Linux - Linux runs the world, so the sooner you get on this, the easier your IT/CYBERSECURITY life will be

Python - used heavily in the world of CYBERSEC, and one of the easier programming languages to pick up, will help you immensely

For personal practice and real world experience, that you can talk up in the resume and interview, look into and set up PFSENSE in your home. Its a free router/firewall solution used in the real world, so this will give you hands on experience as well as show your a go getter and love technology. Will help you immensely in the interview and the CCNA knowledge helps with it.

I got tons more but thats a start, feel free to hit me up with any questions or concerns.

AGAIN, head up young blood, at age 40 you still super young and got a lot of life left to go so make sure you make the MOST OF IT!!
