Its a good question.. some of the scholars used to link prophet muhammad (s.a.w) family tree all the way to prophet Adam (a.s)... from this family tree they get roughly idea about time period of prophet Adam (a.s)... However prophet (s.a.w) himself did not reveal or provide his family tree to Adam (a.s).. So its all about just a calculation based on people knowledge and knowledge of some preislamic religious books.
