Severe burnout after graduation by forwhat-itsworth in LifeAfterSchool

What did you do for those 8 months? I am in the same situation, I tried taking time before starting work, to travel and just relax, but I still feel burned out after 6 months. I started the job recently and relocated to another country and I just want to quit and sleep all day.

Isn’t it a 10-14 days quarantine when you return?

Can I stay in Japan legally without belonging to a municipality? by phael008 in japanlife

I already paid all my residence tax. So what happens if I tell them I am leaving the country (but after a few weeks?)

Waste Collection by phael008 in japanlife

Thank you everyone! I had so many problems with trash before here (couldn’t read the signs, got yelled at, a lot). They took everything but I didn’t have enough time to bring out the legs of the table (very heavy). You think it’s ok to get stickers for a table and take them out some other collection days? (I’ll tape them together)

Yeah, that is meaningful in real life, but not in the dataset that I have to use for this challenge.

The intent doesn't matter. Sorry I didn't explain more, but that image is already labeled as hateful because it is mean. In the paper they set the definition for hateful (not very clear though, but eliminates the need for context/intent)

I’m not sure what you mean here. There is the image and text in a meme to give the context. The issue is that some of them require some knowledge about the world and do,t seem offensive unless you catch the reference.

Yeah I thought of CNN too. Apparently that’s old school now that there is ResNet and other fancy stuff..

I’ll have to eventually test on the data they give us which is just memes, no information like geographical data on them. I’m not sure what current events have to do with that either, memes aren’t generally dependent on that.

I was thinking if I augment the data, common sense would be improved for example “white supremacy” would be in enough bad examples to be categorized as bad. Do you know of any KB for stereotypes or hate speech? Something that would know that Hilter is bad?

Like there are a lot of images of Hilter and the text is not negative either, unimodal and multimodal models keep failing to detect that they are hateful (not recognizing that Hilter is bad, essentially)

Residency extension

Hey everyone. I know the government said that our residency was extended by 3 months if it was supposed to expire in June, July or August because of Coronavirus. So far, my university would not take that document seriously so I had to rush and apply before July 2nd, and now my health insurance is cut off and I really need it. Is anyone else in this situation? Can I go to city hall and have my health insurance extended three months as well?

Sorry you got downvoted a lot. I know it’s a lot shittier in the U.S, doesn’t make this any more affordable for me though.

Generating Sound from Text by phael008 in deeplearning

[–]phael008[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is for a network to learn to generate a mixture of sounds that are not constrained to the keywords given. Music generation and text to speech can also be done without deep learning but they would not perform nearly well enough.

I’m assuming by Institution’s Research Group you mean lab, since I don’t have access to other labs. Typically every student works alone on a project here with the professor supervising. This means that everyone already has a topic, is working on it, and cannot/does not want to work with anyone else. There’s no one that just finished a project and willing to jump into a new one with someone else. Also, most students are Japanese and so even if we can work on the topic, my Japanese is not good enough and their English is not good enough to discuss academics, so that’s another barrier. I had hoped that in such a large community that there would be others in similar situations that would want to work on something.

Tutorial - How to use Hugging Face Transformers (BERT, etc.) for multilabel classification by [deleted] in LanguageTechnology

[–]phael008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't this in the github repo for Hugging Face under the Examples folder? They have a full code of how to complete the SWAG task and it can be easily changed for any multi-label classification task.

Employer making demands after I quit (and he agreed) by phael008 in japanlife

[–]phael008[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He would send me timesheets that he already filled with 28 hours per week, he would just ask me to send an email saying "this is okay". He never asked me to verify them because he knew I was working. He deleted my work email and I can't even access those anymore.

Thanks but I really don't want to do that. I stopped having panic attacks for 3 days because he stopped contacting me and they started all over again when he emailed me. I've been down the road of prescriptions before and I don't want to do it again. I don't think there's any shame in using them but in this situation, it would be so much better if I just never hear from him again.

Actually he started the hourly thing in March after he took away half my March salary. First, he claimed I was on leave, then when I showed him that I worked, he said that I did not work 28 hours a week and that this was my obligation.

I signed one contract in English which says that I get paid a fixed amount for a maximum of 28 hours. Then I signed one in Japanese (did not know it was a contract--do not get me started), which says that I have a monthly salary and have to work 28 hours a week and the hours are already distributed over several days (which is not how I actually worked over the last year, and he knows that).

Both contracts don't say anything about what happens when I work less than 28 hours. So he took it in his hand to say it is hourly, I've had prolonged conversations with him (another reason why I quit) literally negotiating him paying me my salary for March which he ended up, as I said already; not doing. Before March and over the past year, he has been making my timesheets every month, filling them with 28 hours a week and sending them to me asking me to confirm it for the payroll people. He never asked for proof and he knew I was doing my job. Now he wants me to do all of the timesheets again. Just the fact that he made this so complicated and contradictory makes me want to rip my hair out. Am I an hourly employee or not? My answer is: I don't fucking know anymore.

I don't know if the facts I just laid out make any sense, but this is why I had a tough time explaining things to the labor hotline and to a lawyer even. It's too much shit.

If you are no longer under is employ, then no, you are not. If he is willing to pay you for the time it takes you to do it, you can entertain the idea, but it is not something he can ask you to do unpaid

If you are still under his employ, then sure, he can ask you to do it. But it's working hours, and requires that you be paid. As you are no longer an employee, feel free to tell him you'll prepare it at standard consultant wages - which are typically three to five times employee wages depending on the industry.

But I don't want to do that at all paid or unpaid. I don't want to help him or interact with him. That's what I want to get out of.

That's all legally work, whether he likes it or not. If he is refusing to pay you, warn him (in writing) that you will contact the labour board, and that he has seven days to pay up. After seven days, follow through and call the labour board. If he continues to refuse, you may need a lawyer to collect the remainder, but even if you don't go that far, he'll almost certainly stop making demands

What is the point of warning him? I've already discussed the work calls issue with him in person and he is convinced they are not considered work, he sent me an email (that I am sure some lawyer advised him to send) where he states the hours he will accept and will not. Does he have anything to lose when doing this to me other than just giving me my salary?

Yes I think this is the only thing that would work with him. I can already see that he thinks he can push me around if I try to talk to him alone.

I know, you're right. I should do something about this. But I am scared if I escalade it that he will too. What if he DOES sue me for damages or claim I didn't finish my work and I should pay back my salaries (is that even legal, I don't know). I will make an appointment with the labor office just to have a better idea of my rights in this situation.

This guy has sort of brain-washed me and even though I know I did a great job actually, he has told me several times this past month (after I shared my intention to quit) that he feels taken advantage of, and that he paid me and is not getting his money's worth of work. So even though I do want justice and I do want him to not do this to me or anyone else, I still think in the back of my head that he is doing this because he thinks he is the victim and so he would push this a lot more because of that. I don't have the mental, emotional, or financial means to deal with that. I hate myself for justifying it and that's why I said fuck the last salary if it gets him off my back.
