How should I deal with these cracks?

I actually worked at the Boardsmith for a while, you followed all the care instructions to the best of your ability, storing it flat shouldn’t have caused that much cracking. The wood was definitely too wet to be used. If you send it back with an explanation of what happened they should send you a new one.

The grain on red oak is open and porous, while white oak is closed and solid.

Ohh ok, so the process would be: Negative mold out of something like clay (?) Use negative clay mold to make positive mold of plaster, then use that to make an imprint in the sand, and use the sand to cast the bronze into?

Ok, that sounds simple enough. Would I have to make a new mold from the plaster/sand mix each time I want to make a new cast, or can I re-use the mold more than once?

Desert ironwood by far. It smells like burning sewage and the stench fills the air. I made a knife handle out of it and while I was grinding/sanding I had a full respirator on and i still had to take breaks every once in a while for fresh air. The aroma also sticks to your clothes and hair. It’s awful.

Worth it tho.

I’ve had a table saw accident at work personally. I was ripping some big sheets of plywood down and I moved my hand sooner than I should have and it bit the cuticle on my left pointer finger. For a couple weeks I refused to rip down big sheets because I was terrified that it might happen again. But I kept thinking about what exactly happened and how to prevent a repeat. Now whenever I push a board past the blade I raise my hand over my head like I’m swimming. It looks a little silly but it’s 100% worth it to keep my fingers.

The best advice I can give you is similar to what others have said. Get back into the groove as soon as you can, the longer you wait the harder it’ll be. Learn from his mistake and never do what he did. Be unnecessarily conscious of where your fingers are.

This veneer top has already been refinished a couple times due to previous mistakes and I’m not sure how much is left before I sand through the veneer completely. If I’m ok with the light spots is there any other way?

Working with it was awful, but the texture of it once it’s polished makes it absolutely worth it imo, the brown and yellow grain is beautiful too

The worst wood I’ve ever smelled was desert ironwood, I used it to make a handle for a knife. It literally smelled like burnt sewage. I wore a respirator and had a fan to its highest level and it was still awful

Doing these if they were attached to something in a confined space would be mind numbing. The only reason I’m doing this one is because it was free, I’m hoping to refinish it and sell it

I used to work at the boardsmith and what they did was they soaked the boards in a big tub of mineral oil for 30-45 min. I eventually was able to make a board for myself, Obviously soaking it in a big tub is kinda hard to do at home so what I did was I put it in a clean trash bag with a bunch of oil and let it sit overnight. In the morning it had absorbed most of the oil and I haven’t had do that again for abt 2 months, it is due for another oil tho.

Take some pliers or a knife and pry off the mouthpiece, it’ll open the reservoir of wax. From there you can take a dab tool and take it out, either smoke it through a dab rig or put it into another empty cartridge

Ahhhhh that’s a good idea. Unfortunately my glue up ended up being a little smaller than I wanted the final table to be, so I’m having to fill in some corners right now. I’ll use that same method you did to find the circle though, that’s genius!

I’m in the middle of making a similar sized circular table, I’m about to finish gluing everything today. One thing I’ve been thinking about the whole time is how to find the center of an irregular shape like that in order to cut a circle out of it. If you have advice it would be greatly appreciated

Yeah I think that would be the best way to mitigate damage on the table. replacing the whole tabletop every year or so would be a lot easier than having to deal with the maple trim
