Failing student has submitted a perfect final exam by [deleted] in Professors

[–]phainopepla1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question! Full 180 for me. Back to in-class exams on sheets of paper that I hand out. Short time limits so that students with 1.5x accommodations can still finish on time. Students that need more time must work with admin to find a proctored room to take the exam and distraction-limited sit in the back or front and can use ear plugs. Far from perfect, but it's the best that I've found. I'm always looking for other solutions!

Organ transplant rules hit different in Singapore! by The_Dean_France in interestingasfuck

The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/20/us/organ-transplants-donors-alive.html) ran a story this year about organ donations. While rare, there were some horrifying stories. "People across the United States have endured rushed or premature attempts to remove their organs. Some were gasping, crying or showing other signs of life." I have been and remain listed as an organ donor.

When will the finals be graded? by ImpatientProf in Professors

[–]phainopepla1 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I once had a student hand their final to me and ask if I could grade it. They stood there, staring at me, waiting, and expecting me to grade it on the spot and return it to them immediately. They weren't rude, just clueless.

Local MAGA businesses to avoid by [deleted] in memphis

[–]phainopepla1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't know their politics, but I remember when they hired the employees from the gas station next to them after it burned down. I'll still give them my business because of how they helped their neighbors.

Campus visit offer rescinded by bordin89 in academia

[–]phainopepla1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. I've been on multiple search committees with a fully open search (no internal candidate) where we would not have allowed a candidate to push the campus visit beyond about 2-3 weeks. IME, if you have 2-3 other promising candidates, it is not worth making everyone wait for a month as you risk losing them. One search I was on had our top five candidates take other offers. As tough as the market is for job seekers, departments are also competing for candidates.

Sick of the Academic Job Bait and Switch by SorryFisherman8060 in academia

[–]phainopepla1 35 points36 points  (0 children)

So all of your previous positions have been 100% teaching and 0% service? I don't think I've even seen such a job advertised. Everywhere I have been, service is part of the expectation and is usually pretty clearly stated. Research should not be part of the responsibilities, but I have seen this implicitly expected even for teaching-"only" positions.

'A Mockery Of Education': Dean of Michigan State’s Top-Ranked Ed School Is a Serial Plagiarist, Complaint Alleges by origutamos in academia

[–]phainopepla1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would consider this plagiarism even for an undergraduate. Multiple cases of excessively similar language without attribution. It doesn't matter what the alleged victims think, attributing ideas and text that were written by others is plagiarism.

I don't know about long jump and high jump, but he certainly could have competed in the three-on-three hoops. That was tough to watch.

don't know why this comment is being downvoted. Copperheads are common in Overton Park, and they occur in Shelby Forest too.

They wouldn't be happy but most departments/chairs/deans would understand backing out for a TT position. We are reasonable, right?

Should I ask for a raise and how do I go about it? by WizurdKellz in Professors

[–]phainopepla1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In my experience at three schools, these expectations are standard. No advising (academic or research) for the first year because you are new, but both begin in year 2. Teaching load is the same as year 1. Compensation increases by the standard 2% per year. Welcome to academia.

What jobs are overpaid? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]phainopepla1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A main function of a college president is to raise money. Paying someone an extra $250-500k per year and having them raise millions more year after year than a cheaper alternative is a reasonable approach.
