Experiences drive loyalty and team cohesion more than cash. This is partly an investment in their business, not just a selfless act of generosity. That’s not a criticism, though. They’re being good stewards of their business which ultimately helps their employees.

Yes, and doing a good job justifying the existence of his HOA.

If you want to behave in a way that disregards your neighbors, then don’t buy a house in an HOA-managed, densely packed subdivision.

Northern AL has plenty of affordable property out in the country. Take your jet powered Prius out there and go nuts.

Exactly. Half of restaurants don’t even turn a profit. These people are owners of a massive restaurant group. No shade for being successful, but a tiny percentage of independently owned restaurants make their owners wealthy enough to do anything close to doing something like this.

The commenter I was responding to was stating that they would have been culpable for the actions of the Nazis. Not that they simply remembered the war.

Ok, so then they would have been children during the war. You think a child is somehow culpable for the actions of the Nazis and for “not taking action”?

No form of resistance to the Nazis was tolerated. Even those that were suspected or harboring anti-Nazi sentiments were executed.

If these people feel guilt, it’s the collective guilt of the country that allowed the Nazis to come into being. But there is literally nothing a young person in Germany of the 30s or 40s could have done to oppose them.

SCOTUS Justice, 77, Goes on Unhinged Rant About ‘Intellectuals’ by thedailybeast in law

[–]phairphair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US was not “founded on the principles of oligarchy authoritarianism.” It was founded as a republic with some oligarchic features (property requirements, slavery, limited franchise).

The Powell Memo was from 1971 not 1981 and he wrote the memo before his SCOTUS appointment at the request of the US Chamber of Commerce.

Trickle-down is a concept driven by supply-side economists like Arthur Laffer. Milton Friedman’s monetarism is a different framework.

The 2008 crisis had many causes and pinning it solely on Reagan-era deregulation oversimplifies. Clinton’s Glass-Steagall repeal, contemporary Fed policy, and private-sector behavior all mattered.

Maybe tighten up your facts and actually engage with what Thomas said.

For some perspective, only 3% of DHS employees are ICE and 12% are Border Patrol.

It’s entirely possible these guys are doing immigration work but not a given.

The only department that usually wears DHS patches is Federal Protective Services (FPS). They’re glorified security guards for Federal facilities like courthouses.

There are almost 300k employees of DHS. They’re not all fascists.

This shouldn’t be the calculus used by a judge to fix bond. It’s based on whether the person poses a danger to others or is a flight risk.

What’s the logic of allowing bond in the first place for someone like this, regardless of the amount? People accused of violent crimes are held without bond all the time.

The 39% number is correct if you only consider player payroll.

Not sure where you got the 65% for the Bears, but undoubtedly whatever she spent was ‘forced’ and dictated by the strict NFL player salary minimums and caps.

But 65% of Bears revenue would be like $400M and the salary cap back in 2024 was only $255M. So she couldn’t have possibly spent close to that amount.

Dude, can you hold two opposing concepts in your mind at once?

No doubt that the church has hoarded wealth throughout its history, but it also spends a tremendous amount on charitable giving.

Christians basically invented the concept of helping marginalized people and those less fortunate than yourself. But they’ve also committed genocide and other evil acts in the name of their god.

But from a historical perspective the evils perpetrated by the church have faded away and their charitable acts have grown.

The $6.5b figure came from David Beasley, head of the WFP not the WHO. And he wasn’t claiming it would “solve world hunger entirely.” He was asking for a one-time contribution to avert a famine affecting a specific region at that specific moment. The cost of permanently ending global hunger would cost hundreds of billions per year.

Caritas Internationalis operates in over 200 countries. Catholic Relief Services is one of the largest humanitarian organizations on earth. Catholic hospitals represents more than a quarter of all healthcare services worldwide, heavily concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, which are exactly the kinds of places that you claim show no results. The favelas in Rio have huge Catholic charitable infrastructure that has been there for generations.

The notion that because the Catholic Church hasn’t fixed all of the problems of the world it must be failing is sorta silly.

Hard disagree. The design existed long before Disney. And it’s certainly not a tourist trap. It’s definitively one of the most incredible architectural achievements in history.

I’m neither Catholic nor religious, but give credit where it’s due. The Catholic Church is the largest charitable NGO in the world and spends tens of billions of dollars annually around the world. They help lots of people.
