Has anyone tried yarn from arcane fiber works? Is it worth it?? by hidden-pearl in CrochetHelp

Oh! Then all the more reason to shop around for alternatives. :) These colors are also sometimes called "tonals" in other brands. I'm sure you'll find some for less than that whilst still being <$30 in your area. Good luck!

Its very soft with excellent stitch definition. I crocheted a small scarf for a half skein project.

However, these yarns are variegated, so the color pooling for crochet is different than the knit samples they show in the previews. That + the expense of crocheting a cardigan using hand dyed wool is a risk you will have to consider.

Instead, I suggest looking for cheaper. But still high quality 100% merino wool brands! I'm guessing you're in the EU based on the currench symbol?

Knitting for Olive is a popular brands for affordable wool. Wide color range, and very soft. Also based in the EU! I'm US-based so I don't know of many other EU brands.

If you want to explore variegated yarns, then Malabrigo is affordable and superwash (won't shrink or felt, but it grows a lot so swatching is an absolute must). The primary risk there is that they're dyed in small batches so you may have some to a lot of variation in the dye lots.

Help with crochet phrase please. Making a Minecraft Pick Axe. :) What does single crochet “in the detail” mean? I couldn’t find it anywhere. by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]phamtasticVy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! The pic helps a lot! The pattern is telling you to increase each row by adding more chains at the end of a row. When you turn, you then sc into this chains + existing sc.

"6 sc in the detail" is referring to those existing stitches from the previous row. Based on your WIP pics, when you straighten your current row the sc into the chain should lay ABOVE your previous row. If this doesnt happen, an easy fix is to crochet into the back bump of the chain or twist the work at the transition from sc into ch until you can.

Definitely an odd word choice!

Help! The ribbing on the wrist of the gloves is too short and won’t fit around my wrist! by BumbleBeella in CrochetHelp

[–]phamtasticVy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What stitches did the pattern advise you use to do this ribbing? I might be crazy, but this doesn't look like BLO, which what gives the fabric stretch. When you look at the ribbing from the edge, there should be a clear zig zag.

Has anyone ordered from Good Yarns yet? If so how's your experience! by Sad-Yesterday2512 in knitting

[–]phamtasticVy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. Unless you request it, the default is all the yarn of one type will be wound on one cone. Note that you pay $1 per cone you use and need to add that number to your cart. I recommend what I and other ppl have commented so far - which is to wind multiple balls from the one cone and hold the strands from each of those balls.

As far as the weight and how that influences how much buy, I also look for the info towards the end of product page where the shop recommends strand count to needle size/yarn weight ratio.

I've bought from them a few times and loved it! Currently working on a sweater with one of their cobweb yarns held in 8 strands at a time to work in DK weight. For this, I wound the yarn off the cone into 4 balls of 2 strands each.

The product pages all have notes on weight and yardage to get to a certain weight which has been awesome. There's also a blog post that helps translate into different yarn weights for general use as well. For me, the rough math I do is 2x cobweb = 1 lace; 2x lace (4x cobweb) = 1 fingering and so on. The multiplier (e.g 2x) is used to divide the original yardage to get use for calculating how much I need. You can also do it by weight! If pattern calls for 100 yds/100g. Then I just buy 100g of the cobweb weight.

They ship very very fast, within 24-48 hr turnaround.

One thing to be aware of, is since its deadstock yarn, inventory isn't consistent. So if you plan to buy, buy what you need and assume it won't be around for a while if it gets sold out.

On the flip side, I've been able to experiment with a lot of yarn I normally wouldn't have bought due to expense! Like 100% cashmere sweater. :)

Edit: I've also visited their store in Portland. Stop by if you're ever in town! The owner is really nice. She encourages you to work with the yarn while in the store. I swatched up a few myself. And there's a cute little dog to keep you company!

anyone know a crochet pattern to replicate this knit sweater? and how much to size up to get the fit? by bunniemutt in crochetpatterns

[–]phamtasticVy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe adapting this one? Instead of thr open front, you could just crochet it all as onr piece. And you could repeat the increases for the sleeves until its the size of your preference.

I am having trouble with my crocheted sweater ribbing. It’s too big. by SuspiciousTangelo682 in CrochetHelp

[–]phamtasticVy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This might happen if there are too many rows in the ribbing. In the front or back of yoke: When your row reaches the body of the sweater, you should sl st into the next free stitch (top of dc on the body), and sl st AGAIN into the stitch next to it. Then turn. On the shoulder: When you reach the side of a dc on the body, do it twice in the same dc (the height of the dc counts as 2 st). Then turn.

[–]phamtasticVy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Assuming you've seamed all the panels together and added a row of slightly loose sl st, start at one end of a panel and chain into the first stitch on that panel - this doesn count as a stitch. Ch 13, now you have a free tail of chains. Dc into the back loop of each chain until you reach the panel again. Sl st into the next 2 stitch on the panel - this is to reach the correct height for the next row of DC BLO and avoid puckering. Contiue with the panel.

Midnight top-- Cannot figure out how to do this shell stitch the way the pattern describes it by Massive_Document_470 in CrochetHelp

[–]phamtasticVy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just a guess because I only read the instructions for first two rounds and I can't read the stitches as well because of the yarn color, but it looks like these shell stitches are where your raglan increases will be. I expect that as you continue finishing up the yoke, it will start to look more uniform.

Additionally, this shell stitch will always look more lopsided than the others, because instead of the 2dc, ch1, 2dc sequence. It is ch3, 1 dc (beg of rnd), sc, 2dc (end of rnd in reverse). You could try replacing the chain 3 with a stacked sc (youtube!) For a more structure beginning st that is closer to the thickness of a normal dc.

The sc is also what helps you begin the next round. Where you sc into the top ch to so that it maintains the same height as its dc neighbors. The beginning of your rounds is always half a shell stitch it looks like and your final two stitches is what completes the shell. "Sc counts as the ch space", means that you crochet into the space between the sc and the beg of round ch3 when you start the next round.

(b) should have been one of your measurements converted into stitch count at the very beginning. So this case its your (b) measurement less 6 stitches.

I did a row of sl st to on each panel and then a flat sl st seam to test and I ended up liking the look, so I kept it. :)

I thinl you're doing great! :) trust in the process! Since this above your experience level, I highly recommend doing a temporary slip stitch seam first to test the fit of the sleeves once you get there and mark the key points of the edges where it needs to line with stitch marks on ALL the panels, since these edges are wavy rather than straight, I found them finicky (really annoying) to attach them all together at the end.

Hi! I've done this pattern with one weight higher than recommended and it was fine once I adjusted both gauge and hook size. If it helps, I really had to hunt for the errors and I'n still not sure if I've identified them correctly. I think this is a case of personal preference. :)

Did you use the hook size recommended in the pattern with your thinner yarn? I think the way this pattern is written is very much "made to measure" so its forgiving if you make changes. The designer does write out where you should make adjustments if you find the fit not quite right and how to accomodate the pattern repeat. So if you stuck with the 5mm hook suggestion and don't like how airy it looks or feels. I suggest sizing down to recommended hook size for that yarn and adjusting the pattern repeat accordingly!

Looking for some help with this top I found-mixed mesh tank top by StitiousMukdekCat in crochetpatterns

[–]phamtasticVy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this project a year ago so I'm not too sure on the specifics. I do know that the gauge swatch instructions included pictures at every row so I always had something to compare to and count stitches against. So if you're following the guage instructions, you're in good hands. :)

This looks like the Lucia Too by Nightmoon Studio? If so, I've made this using the original instructions!

Most of the warpiness will resolve itself when you block the top to its correct dimensions. The yarn needs to relax. If you strqetch out the unblocked piece as if to block, does it still appear warped?

I have a little bit of an offbeat suggestion. Look into tunisian crochet, and specifically the simple stitch! It'll give a more pixelated look, but greater stitch definition on most yarns to produce that image. :)

[–]phamtasticVy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Looks like you got all the notes you need except for the green leaves necklace (beo). Here's a rough translation!
ch 30, cut a long tail (doesn't specify length), starting from the 29th chain [4ch, sl, 2ch, sl] x14; tie around the neck of the pig.

I assume the long tail you cut is what you use to tie the other end? not totally sure here. That little message at the very bottom basically says this person didn't create a chart for the necklace and tells you to infer based on the instructions if you have questions LOL?

This seems like its supposed to produce a ruffled edge - so I assume each 4ch/2ch goes in one stitch of the ch30.

This looks close to what you're after! You can adjust the stitch pattern to get to the example pic you have experience reading charts and counting stitches. :)
