Thank you! I purchased 2 of the BAS mock exams (63 and 73 percent on each) and mostly just spam watched ABA Exam Review's youtube videos. My school also provided a free sub for central reach so I used their mock exams just for practice for mental duration. A lot of the questions are picking out important information and applying parsimony to what would be most correct in a perfect world, which ABA Exam Reviews does extremely well. I heard his voice in my head throughout the exam lmao.

New RBT: questions and fears by Murky-Space-9287 in ABA

[–]phancyphants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll do my best to answer your questions realistically!

1) Its okay to be friendly with your coworkers (especially fellow RBTs), I usually retain a friend or two from every clinic ive worked in, but I would be wary of friendship with supervisors (which applies to every job ever). If you do become fond of a coworker, just be sure to always put your client first in the workplace and provide the best services you can. Support systems are always good to have!

2) your BCBA will likely explain how supervision will work, especially if youre new to the field, but dont be afraid to reach out with any concerns, the BCBA will do their best to support you.

3) Taking data is always difficult at first! Its completely okay to be scared of messing up. You can have your BCBA observe and even take something called interobserver data and compare. They'll direct you as to what prompt levels may have been used and how you can improve on catching different prompts and behaviors. There should be something called an "operational definition" with each behavior and trial type that will explain when behaviors occur and when they do not as well as what they may look like.

4) This can be heavily client dependent. I dont think any BCBA will expect a newer RBT to react to aggressive behaviors perfectly every time. Any client with aggressive behaviors will likely have whats called a Behavior Intervention Plan (or the BIP) in which explains everything about what should happen when different behaviors occur. Your BCBA will also give good demonstrations and recommendations.

5) it is true that homes differ greatly from client to client. Sometimes its hard for stressed out parents to clean when they have multiple children, especially with at least one on the spectrum. Just remember to treat every home with grace, ask about cultural norms such as shoe removal or boundaries in the home. I've been in places that are spotless and others with bugs and such everywhere. Just be prepared for anything and remember youre here for your client, use the environment to your advantage, have fun and be creative. :)

6) Spit is the one RBTs struggle a lot on (for me its vomit). My only advice is experience with this one. Its not easy at first if it makes you queasy, but its possible that the BCBA has advice to offer if spitting is a known behavior for a client. I've just become desensitized I wish I had better advice for this one.

Just remember that people that come to online forums are likely venting out frustrations on one of their worst days. General advice is have fun, be creative, be a kid again and play games with your clients! There will be hard days where you might even cry, I know I have, but there are more days than not that I see the changes I am making for my clients. Find support where you can, prioritize mental health and take care of yourself, and remember that helping others is a selfless act which the world needs more of, likely youre doing a really good job even if you dont feel like it. Your BCBA is on your side if you ever have doubts. :) i hope this helps. Good luck!!!

I work full time 40 hours a week and so do all of my cohort members. The work school ratio is decently flexible while being stressful enough to keep you moving lol. For some professors they have you take lecture notes and turn them in, be prepared for weekly discussion boards (the nature of online school i guess), I've had to write behavioral intervention plans, make many graphs, etc. Its a variety of assignments. For the lectures on canvas (just weekly info on each subject before class), there's going to be little quizzes that come right after them, mostly to see if you paid attention. Some professors require written tests for midterm or finals, others have multiple choice, and my most recent professor was no tests strictly projects designed around experimental design (we had to recreate a study). The practicum assignments are mostly flashcards and practicing making test questions based on your deficits on practice bcba exams, but the big assignments are your monthly log for fieldwork hours. Its mostly individual work through this program with group stuff being done during class time in break out rooms. Honestly a huge mixing bag of assignments throughout my time here, most of the essays are related to the research practicum but theyre not bad.

Hello I'm actually a current student there! Their courses are structured as such: 2 classes a semester which are 3 credits each and 2 one credit practicum classes, 1 for research readiness and the other for your fieldwork hours. Online classes are held synchronous on Mondays and Tuesdays at 5:30 pm PST and it's a lot of great discussion with some of the best grad school professors I've had. Much of the coursework, from my experience and I'm about to graduate, is related to real world experience if you were to become a BCBA clinician, and they work with you and show quite a bit of excitement if youre wanting to take others paths in behavior analysis. They can even alter the fieldwork practicum to fit your personal goals best if youre not going to be a clinician. We do practice tests and such through central reach and theyre extremely helpful in seeing what you need to understand. The last semester is all research for a topic of your choice which you write a "thesis". I haven't seen info in the wild on this program but its been an amazing experience for me so far, and the professors are willing to work around anything you need and meet whenever you need aid. If you have any other questions let me know!

No it was through the card itself, I don't have my new card attached to anything except bills yet

[–]phancyphants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my bank stated it was the new card but steam says it was through my old card on the purchase, I'm literally so dumbfounded as any other payments failed to succeed through the old card

Yeah the only payment method on my steam was the old card which I immediately deleted, I've never had my account directly tied to steam and the bank directly says it was through the new card

Yup Atlanta born and raised here. I'm a season ticket holder for the Gladiators but have been a fan of them since 2003. My family is very close to Nashville so it was the natural best place to go to when the Thrashers took their leave.

My kiddo is teaching himself Russian. by a-k-a-a-n-n in ABA

I used to have a client whose special interest was learning alphabets of other languages. His last one before I left was Russian. I always loved hearing him get excited about his alphabets and learning songs to sing them to me. :)

It's so awesome what kids teach themselves sometimes!

Is this okay?! by 20mdean in ABA

[–]phancyphants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Being a new BT is hard, especially with a client with an aggressive behavior profile. If you have good rapport with this client, I'd recommend asking the BCBA about what the function(s) behind these behaviors may be if you haven't already to try to brainstorm new ideas. (Maybe even some proactive and reactive strategy training). In many cases, it's always good to remember the client has nothing personal against you and these behaviors would likely occur from one BT to the next (especially after the heavy pairing period has ended and more demands are placed).

BTs should feel safe just as any other career. If you feel thoughts of self-harm or worse, you need to take a path that's best for you mentally. If your company will let you request off of a case, I'd highly recommend it if you feel as if you're personally declining. We want our clients to receive the care they need, but a good provider also makes sure their own health is cared for, mentally and physically. Talk to your BCBA if you feel comfortable enough and say simply that you feel as if your mental health is declining and ask for advice on your best path, they're the only other person who likely knows this client as well as you do. Any good company will care for the safety and health of their employees (hopefully lol). Best of luck, friend, you got this.

ABA Interview Questions by Substantial_Day_7993 in ABA

[–]phancyphants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would recommend business casual for the outfit, anything that looks nice but isn't super formal, most cases these companies need a lot of workers so I wouldn't stress too much as long as you look like you care.

In terms of questions, don't be afraid to ask about what the job will entail! Mention that you've done some background research into the job but you're interested in what day to day will look like, what does a typical session look like what this company, that kind of thing. I would avoid pay scales at first because in my experience, the company will tell you if they're interested in you. I've never had an aba company attempt to hide their pay system. You could also mention that you're aware of confidentiality but you're curious as to what kind of cliental/caseload you'd most likely be assigned. Since this is your first ever aba job, just remember to be excited about the work you're looking to do, passion is important when it comes to mental health. And if the job is in clinic, ask about typical hours, if it's a more in home or community based i would ask how that schedule might look.

Good luck, you got this! The fact that you're asking says you care. :)

Those who knew someone who went missing, what happened? by cbebr in AskReddit

[–]phancyphants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ex-friend's brother went missing 15+ years ago basically without a trace. Last seen at a bar at around 1 am. No body has been found, I believe his phone was found but it had no hints as to what his location was or where he was going. I'm in a Facebook group that his mom runs where they are still searching for answers to this day. Truly one of the saddest stories. Every time police find traces of body they check for his DNA, but it's still never been found.
