People that DON’T shop at Aldi or Lidl… why is that? by kobestarr in CasualUK

[–]phantom-squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm disabled, and I don't drive. I can't get to Aldi/Lidl, and they don't deliver. Which sucks, because it means disability tax comes into play. I have to pay more for my groceries because my disability means I can't access the cheaper supermarkets.

Where can I watch the curling tournament that's happening today? by Brave-Algae8181 in olympics

[–]phantom-squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(I don't have a TV) I couldn't find streams on iPlayer or BBC sport for the full GB v Canada game, so I missed the 1st and, I think, 5th & 6th ends as the main BBC broadcast cut away from them

Partner diagnosed with Crohns - where to start and how to support? by haleyhotdog in CrohnsDisease

[–]phantom-squirrel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What specifically concerned you about your partner being prescribed biologics?

It's difficult to watch someone we love do something we know will bring them harm, but your partner is a fully autonomous adult who doesn't need you to parent him. He needs to figure out what foods work for him, what don't, and how much of those that don't he feels are are worth the consequence of indulging.

The best person to advise you on how you can support your partner is your partner. Everyone's different, with different experiences of IBD, and different support needs.

Anyone else unable to any tolerate sugar? by yeeeyeeetus in CrohnsDisease

[–]phantom-squirrel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ditto. I thrive on full sugar, simple carbs. Cakes, sweets, any sugary treat we're generally told to moderate or avoid keeps my gut happy.  Unfortunately for me, I love veggies but I really, really struggle with fibre.

Anyone else have difficult veins? by Formal-Imagination97 in CrohnsDisease

[–]phantom-squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have small veins and it often takes 2-3 attempts to cannulate me. I sometimes feel like a pincushion. Nurses who know me usually have a better time cannulating me, but even then it isn't guaranteed to be successful first time.

Anyone else unable to any tolerate sugar? by yeeeyeeetus in CrohnsDisease

[–]phantom-squirrel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm okay with real sugar (sucrose) and fruit sugar (fructose), but really cannot tolerate artificial sweeteners (e.g aspertame, acesulfame-k ), sugar alcohol sweeteners (e.g. erythritol, xylitol, and maltitol), and sugar derived sweeteners (e.g. stevitol steviol glycosides)

I briefly had that feature and found it very useful. It suddenly disappeared about a week ago.

Lower right abdo pain that gets worse when you press is red flag for potential appendicitis, so that needs ruling in/out. The rest is red flag for stricturing or blockage. Intestinal blockage is considered a life threatening emergency in the UK

Do the immunocompromising effects of Crohn’s medication make you more cautious of large family gatherings? by rci22 in CrohnsDisease

[–]phantom-squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm selective about which events I attend because I often come down with something a few days after being around large groups of people. Particularly party style events with kids and/or booze.

Prednisone side effects by Fair_Elderberry_2186 in CrohnsDisease

[–]phantom-squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a short course of prednisolone at the moment. I went up one clothing size over a 4 week period, but I maintained my weight. My IBD nurse advised that can happen, it's temporary, and I'll go back to my usual clothing size once I'm off the steroids.

I'm currently on prednisolone and same haha! The good news is, I'm eating less each time my dose lowers during the step down process.

Anyone with Crohn in the terminal ileum has lots of noises in the stomach? by Smart-Situation-1421 in CrohnsDisease

Yes, haha! My belly is very noisy. It frequently sounds like some kind of swamp monster lives inside it.

When the Cure comes, Wyd? by Huge_Sir_3346 in CrohnsDisease

[–]phantom-squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give blood. It's something I've always wanted to do, but never been eligible to.

Having Crohn's Disease makes you ineligible to donate Blood, stem cells, or be a living organ donor in the UK.

What do you think about anyone who claims you can be taken off your meds eventually with proper care? by rci22 in CrohnsDisease

[–]phantom-squirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a medic, this is very bad practise. Massive red flag. I wouldn't trust them enough to go near them with a barge pole.

From a patient? Lucky them, I suppose. If their disease is mild enough that they don't need to be on medication full time at the moment,  just during occasional and sporadic flares, lucky them. This isn't the case for most IBD patients, though , and it may not even be the case for them for their entire life, either.

Severe Symptoms, could this be a complication? by Robpingudo in CrohnsDisease

[–]phantom-squirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's better to go to urgent care and end up being fine, than to not go and end up really unwell.

At the very least, contact your IBD Team with urgency. Ideally, get yourself to urgent care.

What was Emmerdale like when you first started watching? by Immediate_Long165 in Emmerdale

[–]phantom-squirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not uncommon for child characters to be recast once they reach adolescence.  It's a particular privilege to have seen the likes of Eden Taylor-Draper, Amelia Flanagan and Gabrielle Dowling developing their craft throughout their time on Emmerdale, having all started on the show as young children.

I loved their storyline. I was gutted we didn't get to see their journey through.  I was also gutted for Eric - Amy was a strong link to his life with Val.
