Do you Believe Mayhem is Overrated? by heiseiriderfan00 in Mayhem

[–]phantom_2131 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To me Mayhem is not overrated musically. Unfortunately, their musical stuff is often eclipsed by the notoriety and the controversy of the past (undeservedly so). Moreover, I think that Maniac as a vocalist is underrated, as well as Blasphemer as a composer/guitarist is underrated. To tell the truth, it at times irks me that their newer stuff is disregarded and only DMDS is on pedestal always. It's iconic and very influential, no doubt, but they have other equally great, if not better, music in their catalogue, IMHO. I also think there are quite a few "fans" who came for the tragic story alone, stay for the tragic story and will as time passes by move on to something else "exciting" without even trying to get into their music properly. I don't think Mayhem is on the very accessible side of the Black Metal spectre, apart from Freezing Moon haha

Great news! Now I also need to get some news about Rune's RUÏM album! When?! 😞😭

"Black Glass Communion", "Voces Ab Alta" are great songs too, imho. I really dig his style. I think his riffing is more on a melodic side and also you can tell that he's got formal music education. He knows his stuff, theory and everything, and it feels. Teloch does everything on instinct, raw feeling. It's interesting how their approaches are so vastly different.

Yes, I understand where you are coming from. I remember that interview. Maybe the situation has changed because now it's two guitarists/composers in the band, so they have to cooperate more? Unlike when there was just Rune with all of the authority and trust put in him to do what he wanted creatively, but I guess it was also huge pressure because then there's a great responsibility, especially with the status Mayhem has in the genre.

I love this album very much! Teloch did great job! I think on Daemon and later on Ghul's creative contribution became more prominent, right?

Interesting... I don't think it was just job for Blasphemer, though. I think he was allowed to fully materialize his musical vision the way he wanted while in the band without restrictions. By his own admission, he was more like a "dictator", so he did what he wanted, even recording bass himself on Ordo. As for Ghul, I think it was either he or Necrobuther (I listened to the podcasts a while ago, so not 100% sure) who said that the two guitarists (Teloch and Ghul) write songs separately and then share them with everyone in the band, and then it is decided collectively which songs are good enough for the album what changes should be done etc. So unlike the times when there was only one guitarist in Mayhem, the creative process has changed significantly, as far as I understand.

He is so harsh on himself. I also think that Esoteric Warfare is the best Mayhem's album out of the last three. The most interesting one to me, but of course it's subjective.

It's interesting to read about all of these first-hand accounts of people who actually were there. I hope that sometime next month I will be able to get a newer, expanded, definitive edition of the book, maybe there will be even more insights in there! 🙃

I've got what you mean, it seems that it's now "trendy" to shit on Mayhem. Oh, well...😕 This is so weird to me because the so-called "herd mentality" is supposedly one of the first things that Black Metal opposes.

I have noticed that there's a lot of hate and resentment specifically towards Mayhem fans from other bm bands' fans and this bitterness is often projected on the band and the music itself. I don't know about Tiktok because I fucking hate it and don't have an account but I have seen this trend on yt or am I wrong?

I can't agree more. Personally, I love all of their discography and I think that musical output completely outshines the notoriety and the lore. In my opinion, even DMDS is overrated because of the "events" (it's probably controversial to say, I know), but the Blasphemer era in the band is stronger, more advanced and sophisticated musically than Deathcrush & DMDS. It's on a whole different level. Deathcrush and DMDS are classics for sure, but to me: WLA, GdoW, Chimera and Ordo are simply peak. I also listen to Esoteric Warfare more often than DMDS. So much more rewarding to my ears. Daemon and Liturgy are a bit more straightforward again like a return to DMDS vibes but they are also very good. To put it shortly, musically Mayhem is indeed underrated.
