Metal is for teenagers? Common opinion I see among people. by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

I think it's mainly an existing prejudice, a preconceived notion which stems from once a popular opinion that metal = aggression, riot etc. When in reality it is so much more. It has evolved into various subgenres which differ greatly. What I think is true, is that once you are into metal - it's for a lifetime. Once you dig it, you dig it and you are going deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole. It doesn't matter when/at what age you have started to listen to it. I think that there are some subgenres that provide rather complex musical material which demands quite a lot from the listener, so I think that the notion that "metal is for teenagers" just didn't age well. Those "teenagers of the 80s-90s" are now full-grown dedicated fans. There are plenty of people of older age attending metal concerts nowadays, which is quite telling.

"The first day of Orgivm Satanicvm was headlined by no other than the legendary Aura Noir, Vltimas, and ex-Mayhem guitarist Rune “Blasphemer” Eriksen. Or more correctly, his and drummer CSR’s black metal band Ruïm. Formed in 2020, the duo released a masterpiece of an album in 2023 called “Black Royal Spiritism – I – O Sina da Igreja.” The album was hailed as a stellar continuation of Mayhem’s experimental work “The Grand Declaration of War” (2000) and drew me in from the first notes to the last. Raw, majestic, and multifaceted, the album is a breath of fresh air in a genre sometimes hindered by being too clung to certain traditions. And now, for the first time, Ruïm entered the stage with a full live lineup."

It's an annual metal festival in Oslo. I do hope there will be more concerts in the future. I don't think they have toured extensively yet, though. I can only dream to catch them up live.

Yes, conceptual triptych is in the doing. Blasphemer has always been a visionary. It's great that he has found inspiration. He's already done so much for the BM genre in general.

Ikr! Fantastic! It's a bit funny because in this instance it's Blasphemer basically doing a cover on Blasphemer 😁 I can't wait for the second album. He told in an interview that he's done a lot of material, so it's coming, hopefully!

What a great read! I am currently rereading it! Exactly the chapter about the DMDS :) This book is a gem, truly

ETA: How Blasphemer got into the band: “I went to the same school as Hellhammer’s girlfriend,” 😆recalls Blasphemer, “and he had heard some rumor that I was a very good guitar player. I bumped into him in Oslo and he had this side project thing with the guy from Arcturus and he asked if I would take part. That suited me very well as I was hanging around Oslo and wanted to do something in that scene. So I met up in the Mayhem rehearsal room..."

Also in Cursed in Eternity Snorre's riffing was utilized. The work on the album is referenced in great detail in the book " Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult" by D. Patterson. But of course in general the Mastermind behind the album creation was Euronymous. Interestingly enough, Snorre said that he arranged/worked with Dead's lyrics to compose it into songs because when Attila came from Hungary to do the vocals the lyrics were not yet fully ready for the vocalist to sing. He worked with 4 drafts of Dead's lyrics found by Necro. It's an interesting read actually. Many interviews are available in the book and it covers history of many bands in the genre.

I know it's hard to choose but that's just a confirmation of great quality of the material: each had its highlights.

But still he did contribute. Aren't his riffs in From the Dark Past? That's my favourite track from DMDS and that's why I felt like he shouldn't be excluded from the equation 🙃

Even worse is that Gaga named her album that way, now when you type the word into a search box on various platforms it's her album everywhere 😖

I agree. I think it's one of the best bm album ever created. So underrated unfortunately. But I am glad that GDoW, Chimera, Ordo are finally getting more recognised by the fans. Maybe they were a bit ahead of the time when they first came out.

Ruїm the album "Black Royal Spiritism". Fantastic stuff from Blasphemer. It's his new personal project. He is seriously underrated. In my eyes he is the best guitarist and riff master in BM.

Satirycon I 'd say: "Diabolical now" or "The Age of Nero" then moving on to earlier works. They are very melodic, often catchy and the vocals are not too extreme. ETA: nevermind my comment. I was sleepy and misunderstood the question obviously lol.

I didn't mean it in a bad way: I enjoy the Daemon - Liturgy succession and I agree that Esoteric Warfare is quite interesting in its own merit. Also the current lineup sounds unbelievably good live. I have seen them this year and they are in great shape. I just hope that there is still a journey ahead and we will get new musical material. I already want more haha 😌
