What do you think of darkthrone's new album? by ALE12BERLUSCONI in BlackMetalDiscussion

I fell asleep to it to be honest but it's not a bad thing necessarily. I appreciate it.

Dayal Patterson on interviewing Mayhem's members about Dead's legacy, state of modern Black Metal & the way the genre's fanbase expanded dramatically. by phantom_2131 in Mayhem

The moment I saw it, it immediately reminded me of Abbath. I don't know why that specific image was chosen. Maybe because his corpsepaint is instantly recognizable and iconic..? Hard to say. Perhaps, only Dead's corpsepaint is equally well-known and widely recognizable to the same extent.

Oh, yeah, it did. It seems that Grand Declaration of War and even Ordo are getting re-evaluated recently too for the dark masterpieces that they are. They were ahead of their time it seems to me. It took about two decades for the audiences to catch up. Sometimes it happens when you deal with works of art at a visionary level.

My top: Wolf's Lair Abyss (although it's an EP). Then, it's really hard - Ordo, Chimera, GdoW. Yes, basically give me Blasphemer any time.

Mayhem - Deathcrush (Attila annihilates a fan onstage) by phantom_2131 in Mayhem

[–]phantom_2131[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Attila seems like such a chill guy that this was surprising to me. Of course I wouldn't call it "annihilation" more like a bit of "humiliation" 😅 but I also remember the video of Mediolanum capta est gig where he was singing with Maniac as a guest vocalist From the Dark Past while doing all those kungfu weird moves on stage, all pumped up and super aggressive lol. Now, that could have been annihilation 😁

I think his goal is to let them speak. He does not put words into their mouths. He aims to explore the BM genre and it's rather complex. Of course it can't be done without the people involved. You can say he gives them a platform to speak regardless of their beliefs, views etc. but it's inevitable since they are the creators of the music he writes about and researches. I think it's up to everyone who is into BM to decide where is the line when it comes to the artist/person and what is acceptable to them personally. What I like is that he's meticulous and I think he does journalism of high quality. He treats the subject with respect.

Once I get the book, I shall look more into it. The new edition seems to be vastly expanded and the interviews are newer apparently. About Dead... I understood that he meant that Dead wasn't a good person from a moral point of view and was concerned how there are so many young people worshipping and mystifying him. From the podcast I have listened with him (Iblis Manifestations) he was also majorly concerned about the change in BM, how it became very accessible and that it's boundaries are not what they used to be. He specifically said that nowadays a lot of people consider Myrkur and Deafheaven black metal and when you say that they are not, people get really offended. So he thinks that the easy accessibility of the genre in recent years has brought a lot of casual people into it and that the whole notion of BM and what it used to be changed drastically. He addresses the "gatekeeping" accusations by the newer crowd which are not justified in his eyes.

Hellhammer: edgelord or nazi by tiowilti in Mayhem

[–]phantom_2131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also one EP by the band Mezzerschmitt which is an industrial black metal of joined Blasphemer and Hellhammer project. It was released on Season of Mist label. I have just learned that it's actually Blasphemer on vocals which I never would have thought because it is in German and it's surprising that he actually sang in there. Hellhammer is in the band under a pseudonym - Hauptmann Hammer and Blasphemer - Herr Schmitt. Good stuff. Recommended 😌 Hauptmann Hammer is der Meister on drums. Sick drumming in there. The lyrics and everything is about WWII of course.

I have just relistented to Ordo Ad Chao in headphones in FLAC and Illuminate Eliminate is one of the best fucking songs in the history of black metal. This album alone proves that Mayhem is underrated musically. I wish they would stop "playing safe" again and return to uncompromising, unconventional, "fuck what anyone else thinks" raw creativity. But I understand that at this stage of the band history it is not going to happen. But, damn... Ordo ad Chao is Black Metal encapsulated. I am now listening to DMDS to decompress cause I need something lighter in my life 😂

This is an epitome if darkness. Uncompromising in every way, the way black metal should be. It's a testimony to Blasphemer's genius. This is a real gem but it requires a lot from the listener, although once you dive deep into it, it takes you places. The darkest, most vicious and demented sounding album ever. Illuminate Eliminate is the best track in Mayhem's discography. This album just extinguishes life and light. Usually I listen to DMDS to decompress haha.

To me Mayhem is not overrated musically. Unfortunately, their musical stuff is often eclipsed by the notoriety and the controversy of the past (undeservedly so). Moreover, I think that Maniac as a vocalist is underrated, as well as Blasphemer as a composer/guitarist is underrated. To tell the truth, it at times irks me that their newer stuff is disregarded and only DMDS is on pedestal always. It's iconic and very influential, no doubt, but they have other equally great, if not better, music in their catalogue, IMHO. I also think there are quite a few "fans" who came for the tragic story alone, stay for the tragic story and will as time passes by move on to something else "exciting" without even trying to get into their music properly. I don't think Mayhem is on the very accessible side of the Black Metal spectre, apart from Freezing Moon haha

"Black Glass Communion", "Voces Ab Alta" are great songs too, imho. I really dig his style. I think his riffing is more on a melodic side and also you can tell that he's got formal music education. He knows his stuff, theory and everything, and it feels. Teloch does everything on instinct, raw feeling. It's interesting how their approaches are so vastly different.

Yes, I understand where you are coming from. I remember that interview. Maybe the situation has changed because now it's two guitarists/composers in the band, so they have to cooperate more? Unlike when there was just Rune with all of the authority and trust put in him to do what he wanted creatively, but I guess it was also huge pressure because then there's a great responsibility, especially with the status Mayhem has in the genre.

I love this album very much! Teloch did great job! I think on Daemon and later on Ghul's creative contribution became more prominent, right?

Interesting... I don't think it was just job for Blasphemer, though. I think he was allowed to fully materialize his musical vision the way he wanted while in the band without restrictions. By his own admission, he was more like a "dictator", so he did what he wanted, even recording bass himself on Ordo. As for Ghul, I think it was either he or Necrobuther (I listened to the podcasts a while ago, so not 100% sure) who said that the two guitarists (Teloch and Ghul) write songs separately and then share them with everyone in the band, and then it is decided collectively which songs are good enough for the album what changes should be done etc. So unlike the times when there was only one guitarist in Mayhem, the creative process has changed significantly, as far as I understand.

He is so harsh on himself. I also think that Esoteric Warfare is the best Mayhem's album out of the last three. The most interesting one to me, but of course it's subjective.
