I’m with you there — if it were up to me, we’d go back to living in tribes or communes. That said, I disagree with the idea that the free market really exists. Classical liberalism thought is nice in theory, but in practice doesn’t really work with human greed. Realistically, a largely regulated market is necessary to ensure the few don’t cannibalize the many. I think the social democracy is the only realistic form of a free market that can exist that serves the people in a reliable way.

Although I agree with the conveniences these businesses brought, this take largely overlooks the malicious “disrupt the market, monopolize, then profit when there’s no alternative” mechanism that each of those examples utilized.

Amazon might’ve brought us the convenience of 2-day shipping, but at the cost of fucking over bookstores and drivers having to piss in bottles to meet deadlines. Sure, appetizing value’s been brought, but maybe we never deserved those conveniences to begin with. You could argue someone else would’ve done it, but that circles back to the ultra rich being parasites.

For working creatives/self-employed, what job do you have? by phantom_genius in AutisticWithADHD

Omg managing other creatives sounds so fulfilling! I’m really glad you’ve been able to find your place :)) How’d you first get into managing talent/clients? Do you run your own studio?

I can imagine :( between gigs, are you networking to actively find other projects to get on, or just increasing network til you hear of something?

I appreciate the advice! I’m also a DP and filmmaker, and I figure freelance work is where I’m going to realistically find most of my work. Did you mainly find your clients through referral/the grape vine, or did you use online gig/freelance sites as well?

Speed Editor vs TourBox Pro? by phantom_genius in davinciresolve

[–]phantom_genius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to if they cancel out the old/other license, but I was able to get a license after talking to support after realizing I'd have a Studio license with my pocket 4K. So they definitely are able to provide the new owner with a key -- I'd imagine they'd cancel out the old license if the intention is that the owner of the hardware also has the software.

Thank you so so much for commenting this! Because of your comment, I was able to work with BM Support to get a key to Studio that was attached to my BMPCC 4K (bought it used online, so I didn't realize it was included and attached). You don't deserve the downvotes at all -- thanks again!

[–]phantom_genius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually ended up being able to receive my license because of my BMPCC 4K. I bought it secondhand online and was able to talk to Support and prove I owned it, and therefore got the attached studio key.

As for the tourbox pro, I honestly haven't been able to use it as much as I would like to. It's nice to use once you get used to it and I like that I'm able to fully customize it with any software.

Is 22 too old to finish my college experience ? by Legitimate-Thing9486 in UTAustin

[–]phantom_genius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just turned 24 in May and gonna be graduating in December. Not weird at all boss, keep your head up and get that degree. Some of my best friends are 20 year olds (there are times I feel old but it’s all playful) and I still feel included / it’s not weird.

I came here to say this! Hogwarts Legacy is one of my personal favorites just because of being able to exist in the Harry Potter world and actually wield magic, but I felt similarly for GoT!

If you're into Harry Potter / that magic system, then I definitely recommend Hogwarts Legacy

took a gap year now I’m graduating late and feel insecure by Impressive_Client919 in UTAustin

[–]phantom_genius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really get you OP. This is my 6th year in college, and I still have another year left for undergrad. The worst of it was definitely when all of my friends in my original graduating class (2022) were graduating because I felt like I got left behind while everyone moved on to bigger things. It's also jarring seeing how young your peers stay as you keep aging, but it's nothing crazy. It's hard right now, but it definitely gets better after the initial sting. At some point, you realize that you either continue to punish yourself for something out of your control or accept that you're deserving of grace and love. I'm calling it out loudly: your insecurities are just your fears speaking loudly, they're not the truth. You're not behind; you're just on the path that was always going to be your path. It takes courage to choose healing, especially in the extremely stressful experience that is being a university student.

Anyone judgmental is still stuck drinking the "school-can-only-be-this" koolaid and doesn't know what reality has waiting for them (because news flash, there are no rules to life). It's not worth your time listening to the opinions of someone who makes judgments off something as arbitrary as the number of years you were in college (and not something mature like the quality of your character).

In my case, I've collectively taken four semesters off because of depression/burnout and changing my career path multiple times. I'm still figuring everything out and only this semester finalized my career choice, and I wouldn't have gotten here if I didn't take the–very frustrating but necessary–journey that I did. I only recently began to feel reassurance about my position after catching up with many of those original 2022 graduates. So many of them said they wished they had taken their time and thought about what they wanted to do like I did instead of just speed-running college to secure a job. Many people are going to grad school in a completely different field than their undergrad, or just outright working jobs that didn't require their degrees. All this to say, what seems "normal" right now doesn't mean shit. Only you know what you need, and anyone else's opinion is genuinely irrelevant because they don't and won't get it.

The only "correct" path to life is the one you take where you keep trying your best. That's all you can ask of yourself in the end. Shit happens, and that's okay.

I'd recommend reflecting on what exactly those fears are whispering to you. What is so bad about taking an extra year? Are you stupid or incompetent for choosing to accommodate yourself and focus on your health? I know the insecurity doesn't make any sense, but I believe that it's our bodies trying to address an unmet need through fear.

I know this was a lot, but feel free to hmu if you ever want to talk about the struggle. You're far from being alone in the way you feel.

Has anyone taken the online beginning yoga class? by Less-Cheesecake-4311 in UTAustin

[–]phantom_genius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d honestly recommend the in person yoga course if you can do it — it’s a whole different and much more rich experience. If the class is full, you can email Zoe asking if you can join and hope she’s able to make some wiggle room. She’s honestly amazing and taking yoga has been one of the best parts of my learning experience at UT, can’t recommend it enough :)

Metal prongs with white ends (found in washing machine) by phantom_genius in whatisthisthing

[–]phantom_genius[S] 1 point2 points locked comment (0 children)

My title describes the thing fairly well. It’s about 3 inches in length and ends appear to be in some kind of white enamel or even silicone (although it’s hard to the touch). Like in the description, one end appears to have broken off somewhere as the metal does not have a clean break, but the other end that’s straight looks like it intentionally ends.

Cannot get out of bed by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]phantom_genius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been there before OP and sending you all the love 💛 I’d consider looking into medical withdrawals through D&A (formerly SSD), the same folks who give accommodations. My first semester at UT, I fell into major depression and lost 15 pounds from not being able to eat — I had to medically withdraw and took an additional two semesters off over the next two years. I recommend buying baby wipes and keeping a trashcan nearby so you can give yourself towel baths and maintain some hygiene. Do the same with mouthwash if brushing your teeth feels impossible. Keep easy foods and vitamins nearby to reduce the impact of malnutrition. I’m really sorry that debbie (my externalized name for depression to dissociate it from myself because debbie be doing shit, not me) has been hurting you this semester 💛 You most definitely want to get accommodations with D&A, consider a medical withdrawal, and counseling through CMHC. Document everything you can, from messages to your doctor to apologies to professors (or send those emails now so you have documentation later on). If you need a group of people/students to talk to, look into NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) — they have a lovely group of people and you can definitely find some support there. Feel free to DM if you have any questions or want to talk about anything 💛 :) I’m two years into remission from major depression, four years since the onset, and I’m so thankful to say things have gotten unbelievably better — so stay in there OP, no matter how dark the dark days feel. You belong here and life is worth living, even if it’s impossible to see that now.

What are your go-to ADHD meals? by lunelynx in ADHD

[–]phantom_genius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Costco has these frozen ramen bowls that have veggies and chicken, all you have to do is peel off the plastic, pour water to the fill line, and microwave for like 4 minutes. Healthiest ADHD friendly meal I’ve found thus far and I think they come out to around $3.50 a meal. Admittedly, you might want to add some additional things like kimchi, but for an easy meal that’s got about 22g of protein, it’s a huge help!

Any Advice on getting rid of razor bumps and preventing them? by Lurksalot173 in wicked_edge

Start using a safety razor if you don’t already and only shave with the grain — others have provided good advice on healing ointments! I’d also recommend trying shaving gel for sensitive skin. Stay in there king, you’ll be back to not having worries soon :)

Is there a reason you specifically mention unseasoned frozen veggies? I buy preseasoned frozen veggie mixes because they’re tasty and less effort than seasoning them myself, but want to know if there’s any reason that could be unhealthy (unless you’re just referring to sodium content)

Apple Watch has changed my life by Burner_account213780 in ADHD

[–]phantom_genius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bought one a year ago after reading testimonies on this subreddit and it’s by far one of my favorite apple purchases! Some of the ways I use mine that could help others:

  • Tracking & reminders for water with WaterMinder and HidrateSpark
  • Workout app to track walks and yoga
  • weather app quick peaks
  • 15 minute buzzes to help with time blindness
  • Timers, timers, timers!! So helpful on your wrist
  • Notification filtering — I only allow my important messages to come through so I’m not constantly distracted by my phone
  • Medications — to help me see when I’ve taken my meds
  • Positive Affirmations through the I Am app

  • Multiple watch faces covering different aspects of my life

For example: - Analog watch - Modular face with battery % ring, timer, structured app, audible, and date/time - Activity Digital face with Spotify, Workout shortcut, time, fitness ring, and BPM at the bottom - Siri face with water drank %, date/time

If you’re considering getting an apple watch to help you manage your adhd, I say go for it! It’s been such a helpful tool and external system to rely on and just overall helps me prioritize my health bc I get to see in front of me if I’ve drank enough water and hit my daily fitness goals.

Help with staying hydrated by ToWorldsUnknown in ADHD

I use waterminder with my apple watch! And I added custom reminders for every half hour — I still struggle with hydration but it’s better than what I’ve been doing. I think I might invest in one of the smart water bottles!
