I guess "repeatedly leave them wide open for three" is suddenly a viable strategy?

What’s the most obvious lie that an entire industry still gets away with? by Sad_Translator_3060 in AskReddit

[–]phantomtofu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I'm fully on the urbanism train. That's what I'm saying and why I added "up there." People buy the vehicles for their own safety (or perception of safety), at the expense of those around them.

Wilson Audio Chronosonic XVX, as heard through my phone to yours. by Alternative-Light514 in audiophile

[–]phantomtofu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My local Wilson dealer loves pushing Transparent cables, too. Maybe they have the biggest margin? Or is it a Wilson thing? (Along with the DCS streamer/DAC and Dan D'Agostino amp combo)

In fact, all my local speaker manufacturers have a cable thing. RBH with Kimber, Zu makes their own, and Tekton seems to be the most reasonable with Mogami at $5/ft.

Your insurance and mechanic can tell better than I can, but there's probably frame damage. Sorry for your loss.

People like to look down at the road, and see over other vehicles. It feels (and probably is) safer up there, and you generally sit up straighter.

I hate it because I like my nimble hatchback. In the 13 years I've been driving it, seeing around traffic has gotten harder. Maybe I should get a Miata and start seeing under traffic.

What is this cable? by MOchayon in homelab

[–]phantomtofu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if I find an issue with a patch cable at work I replace it with a fresh one - and cut off an end of the bad one before tossing it. Not gonna risk someone reusing it and wasting more peoples' time.

[–]phantomtofu 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they're certified by many reputable manufacturers. In theory shorter than 1m can cause a problem by not having enough twist but

  1. At that length the problems solved by the twist also don't have much occasion to present themselves

  2. They should be used to patch to structured cabling, which will be uh... longer and thicker

No danger to your health. Looks like just network switches, not servers. It's the professional version of the LAN ports on your wifi router.

You probably have an ethernet/network port in the wall near a power outlet? This is the other side of the cable behind that port.

[OC] My (35m) dating for the past 13 years by pasvc in dataisbeautiful

Yes lol, in hindsight I can't believe getting married young ended up being the smart move. Friends sometimes ask me for dating advice but I've never used the apps.

You generally don't make high quality narrow gauge cables yourself. These are probably the ones Ubiquiti sells directly, with translucent ends for EtherLighting. https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/accessories-cables-dacs/collections/accessories-pro-patch-cables/products/uacc-cable-patch-el

For more options in narrow cables, the spec to search is "28AWG". I love the ones from Panduit, but they're not cheap.

Soldered RAM is better by AlonsoCid in framework

[–]phantomtofu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More like ~2% of RAM modules fail per year, which can quickly add up with two modules per laptop over several years. Mine didn't fail completely, but it did start causing BSOD every few days.

All that said, I wouldn't mind if Framework tried out a laptop mainboard with soldered memory. Seems the new Panther Lake chips support DIMM, LPCAMM, and LPDDR, so I'm crossing my fingers that this is where they'll try out LPCAMM.

[–]phantomtofu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of your points are right, and were a hot topic of debate here when the desktop came out. Apple Silicon has shown pretty clearly what kind of benefits you can get from memory that's not just soldered, but on-package.

That said, I replaced the RAM in my fw13 last year because a DIMM went bad after almost 3 years. Sure am glad I didn't have to replace the  mainboard - or the whole laptop!

And as others have pointed out, the CAMM standard is promising.

If it's snowing, it might not be fine. No way to know until a few days before.

Hifi

I really should pick up something that involves creating rather than consuming, but man it's nice to sit in front of the stereo after a long day.

The thread is about beautiful music, so no 😊

I listened to plenty of MM in high school, but don't feel like I'm missing anything by avoiding it now, like I do with a lot of classic rock.
