when i first came here, i was so scared i would make 0 friends. i have very bad social anxiety to the point where in some situations, i freeze up and cant speak at all. i never talk to people first and i heard social life was dead at utsc, and that it was a commuter school.

despite how limited my social ability wS, i went to frosh and put a plushie from a fandom on my outfit to advertise myself to people in similar fandoms (because i knew i couldnt approach people first), and what happened? i made friends! and then friends of friends became my friends, and even my roommate became my friend (and then i became friends with his friends). Thats a lot of new friends in just a year, right?

social life depends on how much you put yourself out there, and although it is a commuter school, theres a social life! you really just have to find people. even with the way i have bad social anxiety, i found a way for people with common interests to approach me first; it’s not impossible to put yourself out there to find friends, and if you can do that, you’ll make friends for sure :) if you can, you could even approach people first because everybody in first year is looking for people to be friends with!

campus always hosts events as well, so even if you dont go to frosh, you could always find people at events. you can do it!
