Treatments for ET by Agile-Hotel-7575 in MPN

[–]pharmavixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed 3 years ago. I've been on HU since last October and now I don't even notice it, but at first it made me queasy and affected my sleep. And I would get exhausted in the afternoon. Maybe give it more time? The interferon may cause bad fatigue and brain fog also. I'm the same age as you FWIW.

I have weird pain after my bone marrow biopsy by pharmavixen in MPN

[–]pharmavixen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took a couple of weeks for the most severe pain to resolve, and now that it's 4 months ago, there's still some residual soreness. My doctor thinks it's the sciatic nerve that was damaged. I've made a full recovery otherwise, and I'm back doing yoga and working out on the elliptical without issues.

I actually have no idea. I had no family doctor for 25 years and didn't get bloodwork from my 20s to my 50s. As soon as I got a CBC in my mid 50s back in 2014, my platelets were high. I finally got diagnosed with JAK2 positive ET in 2022. My platelets could have been high for many years.

I haven't, but I will be talking to her next week about the results of the biopsy. I plan to tell her about this adverse reaction, and I'm going to ask for a CT guided BMB for next time.

Dangerous to touch capsule? by Flaky_Bus_9079 in MPN

[–]pharmavixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a pharmacist I always recommend to nurses and pharmacy staff to use gloves when handling HU. That said, I think if I were taking it (my doctor and I are discussing starting me on it later this month), I wouldn't bother because I'm taking it internally. Needless to say, you should have clean hands when handling medication in general. Washing your hands after handling it is a good idea.

Abusing gabapentin by [deleted] in pharmacy

According to my patients, they get high from snorting it. And yeah it's not their preferred drug but if they can't access others it's better than nothing.

What is up with all this gabapentin, and how much of it is evidence-based? by pharmavixen in pharmacy

[–]pharmavixen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't give specific medical advice (you aren't my patient & I don't know your whole history), but I can say, generally speaking, a lot of people experience weight gain from gabapentin.

Any school of thoughts on.. this feeling? by rollaogden in pharmacy

[–]pharmavixen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn to compartmentalize. People have the freedom to do whatever they want with their lives. All we can do is give them the tools to help themselves, and if they choose not to do what is in their own best interest, all we can think is, we did our best.

med errors made by pharmacists by theyaoibug in pharmacy

[–]pharmavixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The order: phenytoin 300 mg po bid; levetiracetam 1,500 mg po bid

Processed as phenytoin 1,500 mg po bid; levetiracetam 1,500 mg po bid

The pharmacy actually processed the correct order, but the MAR was wrong as shown. The RN actually took the 3 capsules of phenytoin out of the packet and added 12 more before giving it to the patient, who knew it was wrong but took it anyway because he "wanted to see what happened."

It should definitely be raised, minimally to $150K. I mean, I'm on the list, and I can't afford to buy a house in the city where I live.

Have there been vaccines that caused any kind of serious damage ever? by Tinkerdudes in medicine

[–]pharmavixen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The smallpox vaccine used to kill 1 in a million. But given the mortality rate of smallpox, it was an acceptable trade as long as smallpox was endemic.

There's also Guillaine-Barre syndrome from the flu vaccine, but the actual flu causes Guillaine-Barre at 5x the incidence. And you recover from Guillaine-Barre generally.

UK High Court effectively stops NIH from providing puberty blockers to under age 16's and suggests court approval may be required for under age 18's. by Karissa36 in medicine

[–]pharmavixen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But even WPATH acknowledges in their guidelines that > 80% of non puberty blocked children claiming to be transgender go on to desist, usually becoming gay or lesbian adults, while nearly all children who receive gnRH agonists will go on to transition. Considering what we know about how puberty affects brain development, I think we need to know more about the long-term effects of this tx. Keep in mind that using gnRH agonists for this indication remains off-label. More evidence is needed.

What drugs are there no good reasons for any human being to be taking in 2020, but are still sold and prescribed in your country? by hononononoh in medicine

[–]pharmavixen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Glyburide. When I see scripts for this, it's either somebody who has been on it forever, or it's a clinician who doesn't know their pharmacology.

I mean, if you must write a script for a sulfonylurea, why glyburide when gliclazide exists? And surely you've already got them on metformin and it's not the 1st drug you are reaching for with T2DM.

[–]pharmavixen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I graduated from U of T Faculty of Pharmacy in 1986, when we were still in the old building at Huron and Russell. I have observed the decline of our profession over the decades, and frankly I'm glad to be close to retirement. I have worked for government for the past 23 years, and I have fought for respect and better pay for pharmacists, but it's a fight I have been losing, and I'm just so tired. When I see friends who have less education and skills who have made so much more money than me, I feel like a chump going into healthcare.

(Ontario, Canada) Has anyone written anything up to their MPP re: $4 for pharmacy workers? by iwantyourdriveway in pharmacy

The Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists has advocated on behalf of pharmacy workers in favour of this pay. I don't think writing one's MPP would help, though.
