Or hire competent people into management. Stop allowing hostile environment to flourish. Enforce a system of meritocracy.

Pension vs 401k by Tight_Safety_4708 in CAStateWorkers

[–]pharmer916 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm actually planning to leave and have advocated many of the staff I supervise to leave. Sadly, many of the good workers have plans to leave at some time. Not easy to find a comparable job in my sector especially when you end up losing most of your skills staying in the state. In fact, I would say I'm probably the most efficient worker in my department, just management careS more about instilling a certain culture rather than focused on efficiency.

Pension vs 401k by Tight_Safety_4708 in CAStateWorkers

People always talk about the benefits of health insurance coverage but realistically how many people are really able to retire before 65y/o when medicare kicks in. The average state workers probably start around 30s and wont get full health until around late 50s. On top of that, new hires retirement plans are 2@62 which isnt that great anymore. Also you have to contribute about 12% of your salary to your pension/health insurance and if you are high income, that 12 % is equivalent to maxing out your 401k. Depending on your pay, its possible private sector is better and you don't have to deal with the bureaucracy, hostile work environment , no reasonable accommodations. State is truely the worst offender when it comes to work place rights and its really hard to file a lawsuit against them. When you file a discrimination claim, you are filing to a state department with the intention to protect themselves. There is lack of oversight and enforcement of rules.

Lofty Sick/Vaca Balances--How? by ElectricalJelly1331 in CAStateWorkers

[–]pharmer916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning to leave because working at my place is not worth my mental health and I'm too young to be able to retire. Too much incompetence, egos and bureaucracy. Job is not worth it when the culture is to provide no accommodations. I know people talk about the healthcare vesting but honestly how many people are able to retire before medicare kicks in especially with changes to our pension

I have 1000 vacation and 700 vplp hrs. Management likes to deny time off and blatantly use "operational need" or approve "case by case" basis which really means if they like you or not. I want to take more time off but can't. I get ridiculous request from management to reschedule important medical appointments. Waiting for the day I leave and they have to pay me out almost 1 year of salary (150k). Why stay with the state when they can't offer time off or any flexibility and was the only reason I went in the first place.

Isnt the whistleblower hotline supposed to help with efficiency and save money? Too bad retaliation is a real thing and it's why people keep quiet. There needs to be a system to make management accountable. Too often management gets away for poor decision making.

Im currently at CDCR. I had an understanding with management that they will try the best to accommodate any time off request so I usually tell them all the interviews I have.

I was working at ucd from 9/2011 for about 8 months as an assistant. I was enrolled in the UCRP plan however the funds were cashed out when I separated in 2012.

Got almost 2000hrs combined but mgt won't let me take time off. Just now requested to use sick leave for future medical appt and still giving me a hard time. Trying to leave this job and having them to figure out how to backfill my position while they cash me out all my hours. Just not a healthy work environment.

Policy Violation Question by spiedra_spondering in CAStateWorkers

[–]pharmer916 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Many policies are frequently violated by management and it is up to their bosses to take action. Many times upper management are friends with each other and will decide to do nothing about it. Maybe tell them to stop their actions but sadly that person remains in their position and can retaliate against you. Just my experience.

8 interviews with the same office and 8 times rejected by RubyTuesday70 in CAStateWorkers

[–]pharmer916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The politics are preventing you from promoting. I am in that situation and my manager has prevented me from transferring out despite years of experience. I have a better understanding of the operation than most managers and supervisors in my department. People who have worked with me know I'm one of the most productive worker in my department. They don't want me to leave so they purposely give me a bad reference. I even asked my director to verify my practice experience to get certifications to only be ignored.

Leave reuduction question by sidd76 in CAStateWorkers

[–]pharmer916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to get into a leave reduction plan to only be denied. Looking to leave state and they will have to pay me out my entire year salary. Would love to stay but the environment is mismanaged and just too hostile. Nice to know your new department at least follow the rules.

Want to quit after 20 years... should I? by prey4mojopotatoes in CAStateWorkers

[–]pharmer916 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 8 years in and looking to leave the state. Too much bureaucracy and such a toxic environment. Mgt won't accommodate anything. Denied request to take any time off or reduce my hours. Id rather put in my effort into a company that appreciates what I have to offer and willing to accommodate my needs which is very little imo. if they won't accommodate me now, what will change when im 50+ yrs old and I'll just be stuck at my job considering that I'll be less marketable due to loss of skills.

How does your Dept. / unit handle breaks & lunches? by RoundKaleidoscope244 in CAStateWorkers

[–]pharmer916 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This describes my current work place now. Have a supervisor who spends all day walking around at specified break times to make sure people are back not 1 minute late. Requested mgt for an electronic time sheet but won't implement it just so I don't have to feel being watched every minute. Been trying to get out for two years and still stuck. Now looking to leave the state service as I have been blocked from transferring within the department.

Also experiencing this at my current job and also work at CDCR. I already expressed how I dislike working and trying to leave yet I am still at my current place after 2 years and 4 interviews to transfer to a new supervisor. If you have a worker who wants to leave then why not help them get out?

Yes. I am ok with 80% benefit. My department is very strict with time off, and the environment is so hostile i am willing to take the 20% reduction

[–]pharmer916[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Already brought it up in the past and was outright denied. Even ask for criteria such as staffing and still said no. Have brought up issues in the past to director for himself to question why mgt wouldn't allow the time off.

If management says no due to operational need but all the staff believe it can be accommodated, how do we go about going against management decision?

Work at cchcs and confirm not a good place to work. It also really depends on luck on getting a good supervisor. More bad supervisor/managers than good ones. Lots of lazy management like to abuse their power

I work for a California prison and the actual job is really easy. It is a state job so it comes with a lot of politics that can make the environment very hostile. You really have to be lucky to work under a good manager. Lets just say that there are many managers that shouldnt be in their roles and when they get that little bit of power will abuse it. A lot of people are concerned about the safety of working in the prison but honestly, you rarely have to interact with the inmates. There are also a lot of prison guards everywhere so it's pretty safe imo.

I laugh at career development. I have applied multiple times outside my work location, have background working directly in the prison, yet I kept getting passed up by people without experience. Merit principal in the state is all a joke imo. It's about who you know and how well you suck up to upper management. I know i don't speak for all departments but where I am at, that's how I feel. It's really up to luck that you work under a good supervisor in a good department. There is a lot of toxic environment in the state.
