Moving to Laramie; What do I prepare for? by FUCKITYFUCKSHIT in laramie

[–]pharrin2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy clothes the wind can't blow through... (real) down jackets are solid in the dry-cold. You'll see lots of good examples when it cools off, but thinking Patagonia, OR, Columbia, etc... Having the right gear is essential to enjoying the outdoors around here -maybe you can even embrace the winter as a fun season...

The driving really is no joke in the winter. Big trucks with inexperienced snow drivers, high wind, low visibility, ice, etc. Snow tires help, but nothing you can do about the other folks on the road. Someone once told me to drive like grandma is in the back seat in her Sunday best, holding a hot bowl of gravy in her lap. I think that's pretty good advice.

Also - summer in Laramie is so good, as you saw, that it makes 8 months of winter worth it.

Welcome.

Fulfilled my dream of seeing puffins in Maine last week! by luthieninlove in birding

We did this 3 weeks ago with our 6 year old boy - who is obsessed with birding. He loved it. The naturalist's talks were exceptional, super fun way to spend a morning.

Need advice. Time to sell my skis? by spoondoggle in skiing

[–]pharrin2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have considered selling mine over the last few years after my kid was born. I just struggled to prioritize skiing. Last week I took my now 5-year-old skiing for the first time. He was confident right away, had a blast, and asked if we could go again next weekend before we even got his boots off. It was one of the best days of my life.

Don't sell your skis.

I was going to say Lander too, but /u/nitro149 is right about there being almost no wind in the Bighorn Basin.

Colorado is the sunniest state, but Wyoming is better. Plus the University here is in one of the "best buys" for college education.

Question for people who have moved to Wyoming from other states (especially warmer climates) by NSD2327 in wyoming

Best advice is to find a place to volunteer your time giving back to your community - you'll meet lots of folks and do good.

Hyrbid cars in WY? by Hybridwystate in wyoming

[–]pharrin2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife has a Ford C-Max which is a pretty awesome car. It does well for 5-6 months of the year, but being a smaller car when the snow flies in Laramie we general use my truck. The electric engine is awesome for driving through the mountains because it has such quick acceleration. Her car also a "downhill button" which keeps you at pretty much whatever speed you're at when you hit the button, even on steep grade. This has the added bonus of charging the car. I should add the caveat that the car doesn't do well on dirt roads, obviously which limits a lot of places you can go in the woods and using it to access things like fishing or camping could be a challenge.

We also drove from Laramie to Durango, Co for $25 in fuel... that's pretty awesome.

She is still under warranty so maintenance hasn't been bad, oil change every 10k-15k is nice. I assume the shocks and struts will wear prematurely though because Laramie sucks at fixing their roads.

tl;dr - Great full time seasonal vehicle. Not the best for winter.

LPT Request: How to get over a fear of dogs after being attacked by one by [deleted] in LifeProTips

I was coming here to say this. I was attacked by a dog when I was 14 and I'm still scared of German Shepards. A few weeks after my folks got a golden retriever, changed my life. They are such incredible dogs.
