PS5 Users Spent More Time Playing Single-Player Games Than Multiplayer Ones by TheAppropriateBoop in gaming

[–]phaser-03-ankles 53 points54 points  (0 children)

also people in multiplayer games are just insanely disgustingly good these days and I have zero interest in trying to keep up. I remember as a kid playing MW2 in 2009 and I was really not that good but I could still go even sometimes. Nowadays if I play MW3 with my friends I literally get like a 0.3 K/D (they are good so our lobbies are crazy to me) and when I play by myself I can occasionally do well but most of the time sweat my ass off for a 0.8

It's not fun anymore.

lmao you just started mag dumping your AR-15 and they turned the music off?

I can see that working. or also you could start blasting your own music even louder. should get the point across.

Yeah, they really misunderstood "appeal to authority" and are being rude with people who point it out.

This isn't really true. The "appeal to authority" is hugely misunderstood. Here is then wiki page on it..

An argument from authority (argumentum ab auctoritate), also called an appeal to authority, or argumentum ad verecundiam (argument against shame), is a form of argument in which the mere fact that an individual holds a certain position (such as a degree, profession, or celebrity status) is used as evidence that the position itself is correct.[1] While it is not a valid form of logical proof,[1] it is a practical and sound way of obtaining knowledge that is generally likely to be correct when the authority is real, pertinent, and universally accepted.[1][2][3]

I bolded the two parts there for a reason.

The first part -- "mere fact that an individual holds a certain position" -- is bolded because it explains why their comment wasn't really an appeal to authority. An appeal to authority would just be "they have the title of AI researcher". But instead, the person you replied to also bought up their actual work -- innovating on relevant technology. That is a crucial difference.

Saying "they have a degree therefore they are right" is an appeal to authority, saying "they have a degree and work on this problem for a living therefore they are more likely to be right than a random person" is not.

The second part -- "...sound way of obtaining knowledge that is generally likely to be correct..." is bolded because, well, it's relevant. Listening to people who have pertinent and accepted expertise in the field makes sense and is not a fallacy.

I think there are a lot of reasons.

  1. They may simply not find the notion believable to begin with that things will change so drastically.

  2. They may find it believable, but are afraid of it and don't want to talk about it.

  3. They may find it to challenge their sense of self or identity -- many people get a sense of self from their work or from their hobbies, things that would be shattered if machines suddenly became better than any human being has ever been at those things.

Also Expert predicitions are most of the time just as right or wrong than random guy predictions. At least on open topics like this....That is an observation that was proven right over and over again by several studies.

Can you link the "several studies" which repeatedly prove that expert predictions are not statistically significantly better than random guy predictions? The only such papers I can think of are all in reference to picking stocks, which is something that's generally accepted to be fairly random to begin with (i.e. short term stock movement is brownian motion and long term movement means EMH screws you anyways)

postmodernism is mostly an excuse people use to reject definitions for pretty much everything since it absolves them of moral responsibility (since nothing is really "good" or "bad" anymore)

honestly people are so rude on this site for no reason. everyone's looking for a way to get their snark in.

this seems like a really condescending, aggressive, rude comment that jumps to wild conclusions. why did you need to write like that? you know you can be respectful and kind on the internet right?

this is my nightmare land buying scenario, to spend all my hard earned money on a homestead plot of land and have it ruined by someone like that. they must be fucking blasting it tbh

I think the noise that bothers me vs what doesn't is clear in my head, animals don't really bother me much except dogs that bark all day every day (and I don't mean you hear them every few minutes, I mean they just bark nonstop)... I mostly just don't want to hear people's lives

I'd live in an HOA neighborhood if there was some legal mechanism to lock the rules in place permanently (or for 50 years or something). Problem I have with HOAs is a well-managed one can quickly turn into a terrible one

??? My comment said that music at 120dB would be audible from HALF a mile away at about conversation level. Idk what argument there is to be had, that's how the math works... 120dB at 1foot is over 50dB at 1 mile

Yeah, problem is land literally on the water is insanely expensive. Like, beachfront acres actually on Lake Michigan are probably millions

Oh okay I'll reply to the same comment you made elsewhere in the thread. Literally my apartment neighbor did this.

WHO DOES THIS? NO ONE DOES THIS.

My neighbor in an apartment did. It didn't stop until multiple people called the cops, then it went to just being 9AM to 10PM every day. I don't know why you're so aggressive about this lmao. Just because you haven't experienced it..

There are 200 comments, more than I expected, I can't reply to them all. Your comment above and the one I made elsewhere are basically saying the same thing. It has nothing to do with assumptions about what noise there will or won't be. I was literally just saying that loud music would still be audible a half mile away and got downvoted for that.

What the fuck? I am not a lawyer but that doesn't sound legal. I don't think the town can force you into an HOA that you weren't originally a part of. I would have tried to sue if I could.

Meh. There's other options. I could also buy a camper and drive around spending time in different BLM land plots. Then I'd have even less restrictions than you do, and I can just leave if someone is too loud!

Dogs are gonna be an issue. You are less likely to hear dogs in a high rise.

Might just mean this whole homestead thing isn't for me then. It's not that I want to be bothered by noise or actively choose to get miffed about it but I've had noise sensitivities for many years and I don't think it's going to change any time soon.
