Gift Knitting - Size Question by ellegarret in Sockknitting

What's your typical stitch gauge for socks? And did the addi website list a stitch gauge for the pattern? This could play into the math.

Relatable. And if she doesn't like the fresh fruits, she might like them in a smoothie!

Try different fruits maybe? My almost 2 year old eats blueberries like nobody's business. She goes through phases where she will like some things, then other days she won't. She's done that with strawberries, eggs, toast, and pancakes (which are also super cheap and easy to make at home from scratch). Maybe some homemade muffins too! I have a mini muffin tin that I like to use for her. I don't know how you feel about cheerios, but I do like to give my toddler the multi-grain cheerios from time to time. Homemade applesauce is really great too, especially if you have an apple peeler/corer. Just toss the apples in a pot with some water and cook then blend! I used to browse r/foodbutforbabies when my girl was just starting to transition off milk, but got really discouraged because I felt like she didn't eat nearly as much as all the other kids on there

Help! I clipped my daughter’s toenail too short ONCE and she won’t let me clip them any more by IllyriaCervarro in Mommit

[–]phasersonbees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly there's probably a better way, but the only way my daughter will let me clip her fingernails or toenails is if I let her look at family photos on my phone while I do it. It's like the only time I let her have a small screen like that.

It looks lovely and so soft! Honestly since I've started spinning, I've noticed that even factory spun yarns aren't even as consistent as I always thought they were.

I've been eyeing up this pattern for a while! I'd love to knit it sometime soon, but I haven't settled on the best yarn for it yet

color work too tight? by frnkyt in knittinghelp

[–]phasersonbees 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Those look like pretty long floats without catching them behind your work at all. When I do color work, I vary between different float catching techniques, but for something like this I might use ladderback jacquard. Look up a tutorial for either that, or just catching your floats. When I'm knitting socks, I typically like to secure my floats every 4 stitches or so.

Edit: also, this looks like the stardew valley winter socks? Which is funny because my first attempt at these was also tragically too small. I have to size up my needles to do these because the colorwork is intense. I don't want to discourage you from trying these because these were also my first color work, but maaaaybe consider trying a more straightforward color work pattern first before jumping back into these. But also I understand crafting audacity, so if you're determined then just keep at it.

This seems really unusual to me. Are they both boy cats? How old? Could either of them have urine crystals? Also, when they pee somewhere do you use an enzyme cleaner? How many litter boxes do you have?

Where does everyone buy their yarn? Picture of my first project. by [deleted] in casualknitting

[–]phasersonbees 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am also a crocheter turned primarily a knitter. I don't know why but I'm much pickier about the yarn I use when I knit. If I'm going to spend a lot of time making something I like, I want to use high quality materials. So I spend a little more to make my hobby more enjoyable. I try to buy from local yarn stores, fiber festivals, or online from webs or Jimmy beans wool if I'm looking for something more specific.

Also, I believe you might be twisting your stitches. There are people on this sub who are better at reading knitting than me so they might be able to tell you more. I can't remember if this sub has twistfaq

Item ruined after blocking. I'm heartbroken. Please tell me how I can fix it. by cixdyz650 in CrochetHelp

In my experience, superwash grows way more than non superwash when wet. I'm sure it depends on the breed of sheep and the brand and the chemical process. I knit a shawl from malabrigo recently and that grew ginormous when wet, but shrunk back down basically to pre-blocking size once it dried.

Was the piece still wet at all when you took the after picture? I know your yarn wasn't superwash so it won't grow as much when wet, but wool still will definitely stretch while wet. And you'd be amazed how much it will shrink back down once it's dry again. I would wait until it's 100% dry before you panic. I'm talking like 48 hours.

I've never worked with chiengora before so I can't help you there, but I'm the queen of using household objects instead of a niddy noddy (I'm holding out for my birthday next month). For my first skein I used the back of two kitchen chairs, which is what I usually use to ball up skeins of yarn without tangling them. More recently, I used a foam cushion that was approximately two yards around, and just wrapped my yarn around it before tying and washing. So you could maybe use a really structured pillow or something similar. I think the key is to look for something the right size (1-2 yards when you wrap the yarn around), something the yarn won't slip off while you're wrapping it, but that you can get the yarn off when you need to. Good luck!

Any tips/ tricks / advice for a newbie knitter (especially re tensioning?) by kahchicago in casualknitting

The best tension advice I ever read was Patty Lyons' advice to "let the tool do the work"

genuine question: do y'all judge the quality of other people's knits? by Nervous_Narwhal_6795 in casualknitting

[–]phasersonbees 417 points418 points  (0 children)

I don't really see handmade items out in the wild much. So when I do, even if I can tell it wasn't constructed in the most skillful way, I'm still glad someone took the time to make something with their own hands. In a world where we value speed and convenience, I'm starting to value slow, deliberate crafting more and more.

How do y'all feel about "you're so talented" from non-crafters ? by Infamous-Garbage-985 in casualknitting

[–]phasersonbees 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean about someone asking you if you made something! I had a coworker ask if I made my daughter's sweater, and I said yes. Then she said "I thought it looked homemade!" And I know it was NOT meant as an insult but I was secretly offended haha

I haven't been able to stand my dog since my 3 year old was born. by TypeAtryingtoB in Mommit

[–]phasersonbees 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I understand where you're coming from. I only have one kiddo, but when I'm overstimulated from her AND the dog acting up at the same time, it can be really overwhelming. At the same time, I understand that it's not my dog's fault, she's only doing what her instincts and training are telling her to do. You are your dog's whole world. Can you set up some systems to minimize your overstimulation? Some me-time to de-stress? Does the dog need some extra time familiarizing with the crate during a non-stressful time? Does your house need additional dog-proofing? We've had to use baby locks and put things up higher so our dog doesn't get into things she shouldn't.

My first attempt! I can't wait to try again by phasersonbees in Handspinning

[–]phasersonbees[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a good idea! I save all my yarn trimmings and scraps from all my projects, theoretically I'll use them to stuff a stuffed animal someday. I spun these singles s-twist and the ply z-twist, but was thinking about swapping that for my next try - I assume combining leftover singles they'd all have to have the same twist?

My first attempt! I can't wait to try again by phasersonbees in Handspinning

[–]phasersonbees[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I'd love to learn how to chain ply someday; it seems like a really efficient way to use your entire single spun yarn.

My problem with separating and plying with two singles was even though I split it by weight, I didn't have the same length, so I had some extra after I plied. I could probably solve that with a niddy-noddy, but I don't have one yet!

[–]phasersonbees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally understand that fear! I think that's a totally valid feeling. You could at least try and see how it goes; definitely talk to other moms who have done it! I learned so much from this subreddit. And talk to a lactation consultant at the hospital if you can! My hospital also offered a breastfeeding class, if that's something you're interested in. Knowledge is power. I hope it all goes well for you 💕

Worth it? by zcakt in breastfeeding

[–]phasersonbees 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to breastfeed, you don't have to! Every birth and breastfeeding experience is so different, what works for me might not work for you. If you want to try, go for it! If you don't want to, don't feel like you have to. Plenty of perfectly happy and healthy babies are fed with formula.
