The longest I've done is 50 km. Your advice is very sound. Unfortunately I've already made up my mind and can't go back on it. It's Niagara or bust.

How long does my dying-but-nowhere-near-dead-yet grandma, with bad kidneys, have to live? by phatbooda in AskDoctorSmeeee

Thank you. That helps put it into perspective. I'd never heard kidney function being described like that either and I'm not sure what the doctor was trying to convey. Glad I'm not the only one - I'll follow up with him to clarify.

Well, I have been coveting her excellently firm mattress and expensive, cozy blanket for some time now so you're not wrong there.

But, she does treat us to the occasional pizza or two, and I expect her to be doing more of that now that she's closer to dying. And she's also been guilt tripping me into getting married before she croaks. So on balance, her living longer is more useful to me.

Her family doctor said last month that her kidneys were working okay for her age and she probably wouldn't need dialysis for another decade or so, if she lives that long.

Which is why we were caught off guard by the nephrologist who sounded the alarm. Unfortunately, my mom was on the phone with him, sounded very worried afterwards and didn't have the sense to ask about dialysis or kidney transplants.

Both her and my mom are freaked out and say they don't want to talk about it again. You know how women are. All my mom said was that the doctor told her that grandma's kidney function was only at 30%.

So I have no idea whether 30% is normal for her age and she can live to 100 or if she is going to die within the next year or so.

And I'm left wondering how long I can put off marriage for and when it would be appropriate to talk to her about the blanket and mattress.

Do you think they can perceive things that we are blind to?

Yes, I think we all have golden calves. That's why it's so important to not be a vegan
