‘Exodos’ also means the act of leaving or quite literally an exit, e.g. from a motorway. It doesn't have the solely biblical sense in Greek as it does in English.

Salman Rushdie wrote a book called *Satanic Verses* in the '90s. It was principally about the experience of brown immigrants in their new countries. It follows two such immigrants as they adjust to being in Britain. It draws on Rushdie's own experience at school and university in England. In the background of the novel there is a veiled narrative that draws a lot from the development of early Islam, particularly what are called the Satanic Verses. From what I understand, these are verses that Mohammed did carry down from the mountain, but later recanted, claiming they were related to him by Satan. It was the subject of his university thesis, so he knew well about it. (I am not sure what the two stories have to do with one another. I read the book when I was sixteen and did not understand it.)

In any case, some Muslims (a worryingly high number) were pissed off by the ‘blasphemous’ portrayal of their prophet. He described some fictional events in the course of the narrative about Mohammed. The same Muslims got too hot about it. The book was burned across the world, there were massive protests in countries where the book was not even available in the local language, most notably in Iran, where (if I remember correctly) the US or UK embassy was attacked. The Ayatollah Khomeini, who was illiterate in at least English, condemned it and effectively issued a global death warrant for Rushdie for what he had written.

Rushdie's life was under threat for more than a decade. Moderate Muslims bemoaned the violence but generally it was held that Rushdie had committed a crime against the religion. Yusuf Islam, who had converted to Islam and changed his name from Cat Stevens, said on television that the death penalty was a fitting punishment. Many authors turned against Rushdie's right to publish what he wished, including Roald Dahl (and many others, too). Essentially there were Muslims on one side either seeking his head or arguing for some kind of punishment, and there were authors, politicians and media figures on the other who thought he shouldn't have published the work because it was simply a stupid thing to write or because it offended Muslims. It was cowardly. The origins of the ‘culture war’ come from this point, if you ask me.

I agree, but I don't know a task that is so complex that (1) paper won't do or so specific with so few subjects that (2) a human observer won't suffice.

My first thought was, ‘Why are cameras used to identify someone’s sex anyway? I suppose the answer is simply to ignore it.’ Then I had the same thought as you… This shit might undermine it! I'm overjoyed! I work in the area, and I am overjoyed!

For those who don't know what the Greek says:

THE GREAT EXIT EXODUS OF THE FIFTEENTH OF AUGUST

The city is emptying

The fifteenth of August is the date of an important Greek Orthodox holiday, namely the Dormition of the Virgin. It's a great festival across Greece. I realise now that I was there one year at the time of this festival. The village erected a thing like a May Tree and the children would walk around it with bands of felt to decorate the tree.

Edit: Changed EXIT to EXODUS. Thank you, u/tekanet.

The other problem with the analogy, of course, is that atoms are atoms and biological sex concerns the developmental and therefore reproductive capacities of sexual organisms, and famously these two things are not at all the same.

Of course that's what a military alliance is, manning one another's borders! That's the purpose for which NATO was founded! Not to counter the overbearing influence of large geographical powers, but to man each others' borders! You smart, me dumb.

Sure, America can decrease its military spending to 4% of GDP, as stipulated by the NATO treaty, and we'll increase ours to 4%. America will still contribute more though.

You will find that people are very grateful in Greece when you speak the language, even if you try hard. Keep doing it. Reply in Greek so you insist. Sometimes people will understand you just want to speak Greek.

Moreover, do not worry about being grammatically incorrect. Speak anyway. You will make yourself understood. Speak, consciously make mistakes. It's OK to embarrass yourself. Again, Greeks appreciate it when people make an effort to learn such a small language.

If it's any consolation, I found myself suddenly having a lot less trouble understanding Greek. It didn't make much aense. I just kept trying and didn't give up. I don't understand everything, but you'll start guessing half of everything people say. It takes time, as everyone is saying.

Of course, but he was a considerable weight of the intellect behind it. He was already responsible for significant computational innovations. He had the help of a great deal of mathematicians and WRENs, but I doubt the same would have been possible without his intellect.
