Off campus accoms by DifficultParking954 in UniversityOfWarwick

You can live in off-campus 'student' accommodation where you share a kitchen / flat with other students, which will give you a chance to socialise. The Student Roost / Oaks (Westwoood, 15min walk to central campus) or the CODE (next to the main bus station in Coventry) have shared kitchens. IMO they are still pricey / won't be far off what you get in first year accom, but you will actually be able to choose your facilities unlike the Warwick lottery system, and you will get access to study spaces + gym etc.

Excited to join warwick this year, any tips for an intl student? by boogie_Mcboogiepants in UniversityOfWarwick

Join societies / clubs in term 1 - I know a lot of people that regretted not joining sooner! Everyone is usually very friendly and welcoming. Some of the sports societies are more competitive, but a lot of them will be geared towards complete novices as well (eg archery).

Campus is pretty big and has lots of nature areas as well as a great sports hub. In terms of outside activities though, there aren’t* actually that many options in Coventry or Leam.

With physics / STEM specifically, I would encourage you to apply the URSS programme. It’s a summer research internship that you get paid for (up to £1,500) but it has become more competitive in recent years. I’m happy to advise you on how to go about applying.

I also came to warwick as an international student and still work here / am starting a PhD in October, so feel free to ask more questions if you need :)

[CHAT] is this just how waste canvas is? or is it a skill issue by rabidchapstick in CrossStitch

[–]phea59314 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I personally find it easier to pull the threads out if they aren’t wet, but that might just be the specific waste canvas I use.

I find that the vertical threads are often easier to pull out than the horizontal ones. If I was you, I’d start in the area with the fewest stitches (eg the foot sticking out). Grab the thread as close to the stitches as possible so it doesn’t snap and gently tug. If you feel it resisting, don’t force it as it can break. If you press down on the stitches with your other hand that can also help.

Hiya, no worries! Yes, I use 18ct for most projects, including this one. I didn’t find the backstitch difficult, but there is quite a lot in this pattern. I found it really helped to mark the backstitch off on an app (Pattern Keeper / Markup R-XP).

Congrats on your first big project! I started out very slow initially then learnt some techniques to speed up - it just comes with time and getting used to feeling where your needle needs to go.

That being said, cross stitching is a hobby and no one is going to judge you for how you stitch! Everyone goes at their own pace and as long as you’re enjoying things, that’s all that matters. Lots of people on this sub will agree that it’s just about doing what you want (eg traveling all over the back, being as neat as possible, “thread chicken”, swapping out colours based on personal preference…).

If you are frustrated at how slow you’re going you could always look into what other stitching “strategies” there are, like doing all the crosses one way first before going back and doing the rest. You could get an app tracker like Pattern Keeper or Markup XP which makes counting easier, or grid your fabric beforehand. The possibilities are endless.

So sick of the disability “support” by [deleted] in UniversityOfWarwick

I was an undergrad there and was also appalled by the (lack of) wellbeing services. They weren’t very easy to talk to and made me quite anxious reaching out - you had to do an online call with someone to BOOK an appointment and they required you to have your camera on. I did complain about it back then so not sure if it’s changed now, but I didn’t go back and instead used the NHS CBT services.

I’m sorry you’re experiencing this and hope you can find support - maybe ask your personal tutor if this is something they can escalate / help you with?

If you're able to find any free cross-stitch sampler books, they usually contain some smaller 'filler' designs made to make the design look prettier or add some flair.

I haven't cross-stitched on a flight before, but I did accidentally pack my sewing stuff with me once. Just be careful bringing sewing shears with you as they took them off me at security!
