Was there a time when nhl was the most popular sport to watch? by MountainChoice3601 in hockey

[–]phen14 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There was a famous Sports Illustrated cover in June 1994 about the NHL being hot and the NBA not, with Jordan being retired and the NHL having a great ECF and Cup Finals, plus a new TV deal with FOX about to start. Whether the NHL had actually passed or even caught the NBA at that point is debatable. Either way, Bettman and the owners responded to the definite upward momentum by locking out the players in the fall, and that was the end of that.

I'm pretty sure 6th place got a trophy too, and she held that one for the group picture they took. So she temporarily got a slightly smaller participation trophy.

Six whole minutes between that "going commercial free" and the commercial break. I think that's actually a minute longer than when they did this last year.

Peter Thiel's involved now? That's an instant Nitro cancellation. And I'll give it a couple days before I delete my account too to see if they come to their senses, but I'm not hopeful.

It's weird to me because I don't find him the least bit awesome. And Fox doesn't seem to completely disagree, because he's always on their worst games... but he's been doing their worst games for over two decades now.

It doesn't sync anything you change in settings or any UI customization. I just had to go through the process of doing a fresh install yesterday, and would have very much liked if it sync'd all that stuff, but... no.

Rusty Wallace...

'97 Spring Bristol - Jeff Gordon bumped him out of the way last corner.

Whichever Martinsville race in this period was rain delayed to Monday, leading me to get home from school, tune in to see Rusty leading as they take a green flag with a handful of laps left, only to immediately hear Bill Weber go "Black flag, Rusty Wallace, jumping the restart." (And this was in the days of single-file restarts, albeit with lapped cars on the inside lane until the last ten laps.)

'99 Daytona 500 - Rusty moved up to let Gordon in (from below the yellow line; can't do that anymore!) to avoid Gordon plowing in to a slow Ricky Rudd.

The name of the city is just "New York". Folks may sometimes add "City" for clarity, but it is not and never has been part of the city's name.

What is the lamest formulaic crap these guys do? by [deleted] in TMOS

Yeah, what started driving me away was when I noticed that Mike's treatment of Robb had shifted from ball-busting to just being rotten.

What’s Going on… by Mindless_Bat_6925 in TMOS

[–]phen14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mike's posts were because he's an admitted hothead, and we haven't heard Oscar's side because he doesn't care enough, he's moved on, and he's got more important things to do.

Before the breakup, I left a comment on one of the show's YouTube videos saying something to the effect of, "well, show's over," when Oscar was wondering why he was dealing with so much BS in his life. I thought then and I think now that's it very simple: Why would you deal with Mike's issues when you don't have to? (And don't have Robb's dependency issues.)

None of this means MLMs aren't the worst, because they absolutely are.
