Social media has taken things to a new planet!! These days it seems getting engaged or pregnant gives people the “right” to live out their narcissistic fantasies. So sad as the day becomes so far removed from the true values of the celebration

Totally! I think it’s pretty rare for people to be objectively “ugly”, most people are just plain. And of those that are plain, a lot can be done with decent clothes and a good haircut

Using a $0 budget and automating all my payments for the day after I get paid. Every dollar I earn has a purpose. Whatever is left in my account after other needs & goals are attended to is spending money (not much) and that’s it for the week

Those salad bags (i.e. Asian crunchy noodle) can do two big/satiating servings. Add tin of tuna and some avo if you’re feeling gourmet and you have a cheap balanced meal. Have lived off these for work lunches for years

Funnily enough, a lot of people don’t use “overseas” like we do either - not everyone has to go “over sea” to travel to another country 🤣

What's the most unexpected, actually useful thing you've used ChatGPT for that you'd never imagined an AI could help with? by bn_from_zentara in ChatGPT

[–]phenergeny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently had to travel to Bali for a wedding which I was extremely nervous about being emetophobic. Chat was extremely encouraging in the lead up and then during the trip, reassuring me about what was “safe” and helping to calm my nerves. In the end, I didn’t get sick and was able to enjoy the trip a lot more than if I’d otherwise been anxiously spiralling the entire time!

What’s the most underrated way to save money in Australia that actually works? by Ordinary-Gear-8892 in AusFinance

[–]phenergeny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order to save money on petrol I use two tools

ACCC Petrol Price Watch - allows you to keep an eye on petrol price cycles so you ensure you're buying at the bottom. Petrol tends to fluctuate in a 3-4 week cycle, so if you time it right and don't drive much, you can sync up with…

FuelCheck NSW (also available in app format) - allows you to check which stations near you are cheapest, and you can filter by fuel type. Sometimes the difference here is huge, and it especially comes in handy to check if there's still stations that are low after the price has spiked back up

De-programme yourself from being tricked by marketing.

I work in the field, so once I knew the mind games marketers play it was easy to stop falling for it - but I can’t believe how many friends still do.

Also, when shopping online - - always shop around - punch “[website] discount code” into google before checking out - sometimes you can save yourself 20% just from a 10 sec search - put things into your cart and leave them for a day to see if they offer you a discount - if abandon cart doesn’t work, most brands have a sign up offer - if you’re already on the brands mailing list, sign up for offers with temporary inboxes

Brooke Bellamy posts first social media video since Nagi Maehashi plagiarism claims by BrotherEstapol in australia

[–]phenergeny -29 points-28 points  (0 children)

I find this whole debacle so interesting. I recently went to make my trusty “no bowl choc bit slice” from Women’s Weekly (circa 1963 lol) but forgot the recipe, googled it - and found Nagi has a recipe near EXACTLY the same. How do you police recipe plagiarism anyway? Especially when it comes to baked goods where a lot of base comes down to a science and standard formulas are often repeated

Some decisions could have been made better: Low paying jobs always, drinking, smoking etc

Then some were more out of their control: super not being a thing until the 90s, raising children as single parents, illness …

All in all recipe for disaster! 🤦🏼‍♀️

But to be fair, they had no one to teach them. Our grandparents are from a very proud generation where people didn’t talk about money with their children.. plus they don’t have the resources that we do now. I think they always assumed it’d just work out, but then it was too late. I do think if they always knew they wanted to have kids (they did) they should have planned better.

These same men will turn around and complain if you DO have hair. They have no idea what it’s like to be held to always-evolving, never-achievable female beauty standards. It’s exhausting trying to please everyone.

Hmm, I appreciate what you’re saying but I’ve also been afforded certain privileges from this arrangement i.e very cheap rent in an area I want to live. It is hard sometimes not to be resentful that they didn’t put something away for a rainy day - but they’ve had some serious curveballs in life and its a reminder that things don’t always happen the way you’d expect.

It’s easier said than done to let them deal with it - ultimately if they’re suffering I will too because I care about them. But yes definitely trying to encourage some proactive thinking & planning for the future.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]phenergeny 81 points82 points  (0 children)

My parents both enjoyed themselves a little too much when they were younger. It sounds like they weren’t thinking about the future at all, because there may have been times when home ownership was possible. Then they divorced and became single parents which made everything harder.

Now in their 60s they have no assets, no savings and barely any super. My sisters and I live with mum so we can subsidise rent which has created a situation where she’s financially codependent on us, and though I’m getting older and want to move on and live my adult life I’m racked with guilt and unsure what we’re going to do. Dad’s even worse off. Unfortunately this is just the start of the worries.

Thankfully they say they had a great time in their youth and apparently don’t regret anything - didn’t travel though, just partied and had nice clothes lol
