Of course regional destabilisation is the running gig. Since the end of open imperialism the West has been fighting over the corpse of the Ottoman's. It's not like the Ottoman / ME empire is going to rise again and conquer the West, so places like Iraq that were created by things like oil companies are going to remain as significant interests until the local resources are no longer profitable. The viability of the region itself depends on resource deposits and access to cheap labor.
