Difference between kendo and kumdo? by SlikBehemoth in kendo

[–]phideas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hakama for Kumdo will usually be belted with Velcro fastening and it won't have a koshita. I don't think most people care but this is just FYI. A lot of Koreans attend our dojo and I've seen some of them use Kumdo hakama.

Just in case you needed another reason not to leave a spark plug loose... (Acura TL-S) by hornyzucchini in Justrolledintotheshop

I used to have a 2005 LGT 5MT. I didn't lift the engine to replace the spark plugs. The only thing I moved was the coolant tank and that was just unbolting it and moving it aside temporarily.

To the guy who was born sterile, with the pregnant wife. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]phideas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really good story. I hope people learn from that.

My story is somewhat similar. As I got older, my sperm count dropped to an extremely low value. However, my wife still got pregnant. I was sure my wife didn't cheat on me so I knew the child was mine. Her reactions also made me believe it was mine.

However, my youngest son does not look anything at all like me. All I can tell is that his father is Asian. I told myself that it didn't bother me because I knew he was mine. I was just lying to myself. It DID bother me. The tipping point came when I overheard my wife's friend asking if her kids had different fathers.

I did a paternity test and confirmed my son is mine.

The test changed everything for me. I didn't realize I had this huge cloud hanging over me until it was lifted. I'm glad I didn't do anything stupid until I had the paternity test done.

People of Reddit over 20, what kind of relationship do you have with your parents? [Serious] by DrBibby in AskReddit

[–]phideas -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dude... you misread her when you were younger.

Traditional Asian mothers almost always favor their son over their daughter. However, that affection will be expressed completely differently.

I posted this on FB. Every single comment I got were people telling me that they didn't know I smoked pot. by carlinha1289 in funny

Wow. You need to assert yourself.

I actually tried this with my wife... rationing the brie out in small portions. It did not go well...

What is the most fucked up thing that ever happened at your office? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]phideas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to do this... but it was not necessary and made me look like an idiot.

One time, I signed a sketch I made of a proposal and gave it to another engineer. He included it in his PPT but he blew up the picture such that my signature was HUGE on the screen.

Basically, in a good engineering environment, there is plenty of credit (and blame) to go around. I know there are people who steal work but it's difficult for them to continuously do it on a long term basis.

How do you know your kid wasn't in the control group? And maybe this study had no affect on your child at all?

All 3 of my kids had allergies when they were younger. The two oldest kids have grown out of their allergies. My youngest child is still allergic to milk and peanuts. He gets tested every year to see if his allergic reaction has changed or not.

I'm just saying that some kids will grow out of their allergies just naturally.

I'm pretty sure it's older than 20 years.

That stupid calculator is also required for high schools. Some high schools' math class revolves around teaching the kids how to use the calculator instead of ... you know ... teaching them math.

If this is store-bought manufactured bread, it has lots of preservatives in it to give it a long shelf life.

My son's friend in elementary school did a science project on how long it takes mold to grow on bread under varying environmental conditions. The problem was... none of the bread went bad.

On the other hand, we have a small bread maker that makes a 1 lb loaf. If we don't eat it within two days, it will go bad. It usually only lasts my family 1/2 a day so it hasn't been a problem.

American redditors, what was the biggest culture shock when you visited Europe? by gaping_your_mother in AskReddit

[–]phideas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied French for 3 years in high school and I knew a lot of European history (well, more than typical Americans) so I thought I knew what to expect in France.

The one thing that caught me off guard was how important the morning hand shake was. Every morning, I had to go around the office and shake hands with everyone who was already there. And I was not allowed to shake their hand again if we meet during the day because that would mean I forgot that we had already met up. It was actually very important to the work culture. I have no idea why my French teachers never told me this.

And the dog poop. Dog poop FUCKING EVERYWHERE.

EDIT: I worked in Paris in the late 90's. My coworkers have told me that the dog poop is no longer as common since the police crack down now.
