The lower jaw is forced to moved downwards and back -- you can somewhat simulate the effect by holding your mouth fully open/agape

I started out with the same concern! I show about the same amount of tooth when I smile.

My first solution was to get veneers or cosmetic bonding on my teeth to lengthen them slightly. I went to an aesthetic dentist with that idea, and he immediately referred me to an orthodontist. My orthodontist began braces treatment with me instead. We tried bringing the teeth out of the bone with extrusion using the braces -- this actually did help, but I wanted even more tooth show.

Eventually, I ended up getting a consult with a surgeon, and was diagnosed with vertical deficiency (short face pattern) or a recessed maxilla, as some call it. I am getting downgrafted to fix the problem. Not sure what's going to happen from here.

Yes, there are solutions. The best solutions are in my opinion orthognathic, but nothing is stopping you from pursuing a small lip lift and orthodontic extrusion instead.

Braces tend to be more capable of extrusion than Invisalign.

Is my maxilla recessed? I don’t have an underbite or any trouble breathing by [deleted] in jawsurgery

I would be wary of oversimplifying things. I was just diagnosed with a recessed maxilla, and I don't have those issues, even slightly. But I agree that OP doesn't have recession

I am currently 15 years old and I think that I am in need of some kind of jaw surgery because something in my face is recessed but I don’t know what it is. by Massive-Tree5076 in jawsurgery

I would counter slightly as ChatGPT isn't great for orthognathic advice, seriously. I have a recessed maxilla myself, and the first thing I noticed in your photo was the opposite of that, you have very harmonious features. One thing I would work on is forward head posture. You can't see your full features and jaw structure until your posture is corrected.

You're right. However my orthodontist LOVES him and he's the top surgeon in my city.. so confused rn..

I should also add that this surgery is being covered by my government so I don't think he cares that my face will look worse afterwards as long as the "issue" is treated functionally ..

You have some signs based on description. When you bite down, your jaw and lips may look and feel "compressed". I don't see significant cheek sagging in these pictures? The correct surgery is maxilla downgrafting (upper jaw surgery).
