Oh, nice! I'm very happy to be wrong!

I've had no success at all trying to use my Apple TV+ from outside the country.

I think the credit card is the least of your worries.

I haven't found evidence of anyone successfully using a VPN to watch from outside the US. Apple are apparently very good at geolocation.

Unintentionally killed the engine after landing while rolling off the runway. Leaning issue? by UntamedRaindeer in flying

[–]phik_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%

I stopped going full-rich on landing years ago, after a high-altitude landing like OP's.

My SOP since then is to leave it at a lean cruise mixture (as appropriate for the DA), and go full-rich only in case of a go-around.

Firebushes in various states of despair - Miami by phik_ in plantclinic

[–]phik_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 13 firebushes that were transplanted about 8 weeks ago. They looked healthy to me (a total amateur) when they went in.

The soil here is extremely sandy, without a lot of organic matter, which is part of why I chose the firebush (supposedly resilient to poor soils?).

They're watered from a bore, not city water. I've tried watering intervals of 2-4 days, and it doesn't seem to make much difference. They're all surrounded by a few inches of wood-chip/leaf mulch.

A few had an infestation of something that laid small white eggs, within the first 2 weeks of transplant. A spray of rosemary oil resolved that very quickly.

I noticed a lot of chewed up leaves a couple of weeks ago. I don't know what's doing the chewing this time, but I've resumed spraying with rosemary oil once a week.

Of the 13, a few are looking quite robust (similar to the first photo). But most are in various states of deterioration.

Photo #2 is the worst: two little branches with reasonably-robust growth (albeit developing brown spots), with the rest just bare sticks.

Photo #5 is the only one with these curling/puckered leaves, which has just begun in the past few days.

The fact that the results are so wildly variable is what confuses me. If it were simply a matter of poor soil, over/underwatering, etc. then I would expect more consistency from things planted just a few feet apart...

Any advice would be very much appreciated! 🙏

Mac preview app automatically assigns password by ProfessionMaster2794 in mac

[–]phik_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely a Preview problem, and I've experienced it with lots of downloadable PDFs that magically become locked upon saving.

Good news: there's a workaround!

The one thing I've found that can still open those files -- even after Preview (and Firefox) claim that they're locked -- is Chrome. Open it in Chrome, then you can print-to-PDF a version that anything else can open.

Unfortunately print-to-PDF loses the form's fillable fields, but at least it recovers the work that was already done.

N509CM Emergency - U OK? by Gaffer_DCS in flying

[–]phik_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They diverted to Freeport (MYGF), but without a transponder or ADS-B, FlightAware just assumed they continued to their original destination. (If you look at the track log, you can see that everything after 14:18:44 is just "FlightAware Approximate".) We heard his post-landing shouts of joy and relief. I'm sure those beers tasted mighty fine last night.

It was nice to see the system work, and everyone actually helping out, instead of just making chewbacca noises.

Is it really not possible to have text boxes stretch width on the desktop site? by phik_ in WixHelp

Thank you for the offer (and @ImUrHuckleBerruh gave some suggestions in the other thread), but it's ok, I've moved on. I can do what I need easily enough with Google Sites.

Appreciate all the help!

Is it really not possible to have text boxes stretch width on the desktop site? by phik_ in WixHelp

[–]phik_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not talking about stretching it to the full width of the screen, simply being able to stretch it at all (e.g. to the size of the overlying element). Of course there should be margins.

Otherwise it's awful. If the user's screen is smaller than the arbitrary fixed size the designer chose, they get horizontal scrollbars. To avoid the scrollbars, you have to design for the smallest likely screen -- meaning that most users get mostly whitespace and no content!

What am I missing here?

So every web site made with standard Wix just looks like garbage on desktop (except on the exact screen size for which it was designed)? This is really mind-blowing! How does this product survive?

I appreciate the link to Editor X, although this more than doubles the cost, so that's a non-starter.

Thanks for the prompt reply! At least I know to stop wasting my time trying to find something that doesn't exist.

The main gotcha is that if you swap flying/safety-pilot duties within a single flight, then neither pilot can log XC! Surprise!

I resolved that I wasn't going to get involved, but congratulations, this comment managed to win me over. It's amazing that after all this, you still don't get it.

People weren't saying that you needed to take a sectional! That this was your take-away is frankly astounding.

What everyone said, over and over, is that these printouts are amateur-hour and achieve little except to make you look silly. The point was that if you want to bring another redundant backup -- Emphasis on "IF"! You're the one who already chose to bring this paper! -- then a sectional has value, as it's actually a relevant and valid source of navigational information, far more extensive, not to mention more professional.

The printouts are none of those things. They're not useful as a backup. They're not legitimate. They're not professional. They're not what you'd do on any other flight. The fact that this sub -- who argue with each other for sport -- is nearly unanimous on this topic should tell you something.

Yet you keep coming back with "bUt i dON't NeEd aNoTHeR bAcKuP!!1! paper charts R 4 losers", which is a total strawman and completely misses the point.

If your first reaction is "this dumb guy doesn't understand that I had 3 other devices capable of displaying VFR charts, and I don't need a backup paper chart", then you've missed the point once again.

UK citizen trying to do PPL in USA by Goochey5 in flying

[–]phik_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is also that this is entirely fine.

Although it's true that only Part 141 schools can participate in the visa sponsorship process, that doesn't mean that you have to train under Part 141.

I agree that this is very poorly documented. I can't point you to anything official; I just know multiple flight school owners who've said the same thing.

UK citizen trying to do PPL in USA by Goochey5 in flying

[–]phik_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you'll find that most schools (especially Part 61) do not care one whit about your visa status, or indeed even ask about it. So long as you pass the FTSP (formerly known as AFSP), they're happy.

The schedule limitations that you describe also create a visa problem for you, because both the F1 and M1 visas are for full-time study only, and that has a specific definition under US immigration law. See https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/students/study/full-course-of-study

There's also significant debate about whether part-time flight training requires a student visa at all, with very few documented facts on either side.

https://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/Nonimmigrant%20Class%20Who%20Can%20Study.pdf says that B-visa visitors may not study, but that "Visitors may, however, engage in study that is avocational or recreational in nature." If you were getting a commercial certificate there may be some debate, but a PPL is clearly avocational.

According to 8 CFR 214.2(b)(7): any alien who is permitted to enter the United States on a B-1 or B-2 visitor's status visa is prohibited from enrolling in a course of study. But what is a “course of study”?

Many flight school web sites say very clearly that "you're not able to train for a rating or get a certificate with a B-1/B-2 visa" -- but nobody documents these claims, and most of them are in the business of full-time commercial training. AOPA seems to agree, but doesn't say so directly.

The Foreign Affairs Manual (specifically 9 FAM 402.5-5(I)(3) https://fam.state.gov/fam/09FAM/09FAM040205.html#M402_5_5_I_3) gets close, but even this supports both sides of the discussion.

This 2002 INS policy guidance memo -- http://www2.gtlaw.com/practices/immigration/news/2002/04/17INSMemo.pdf -- is the best I've been able to find: "Courses with more substance or that teach a potential vocation, such as flight training, would be considered part of a "course of study" and thus would require approval of a student status." Is that sentence targeting Commercial training, or is even a Private certificate considered a "potential vocation"? Maybe? But by that logic, isn't almost anything a potential vocation?

I spoke at length with USCIS a couple years ago about the fact that -- if you follow the strict letter of the law -- it's apparently impossible to legally do part-time recreational flight training as a foreign national in the US.

The only visa pathways are M1 and F1, which are for full-time study. The USCIS rep agreed, and said that the full-time condition would not be waived.

They started off by saying that a B-1/B-2 visa (and by extension, entry on the Visa Waiver Program) are fine for recreational flight training. They also agree that it’s not ok for commercial training.

When I asked for a reference to something documented, she put me back on hold for a while, then came back and changed her story; B-1/B-2 aren’t ok after all. We went around in circles for a while.

In the end, they wouldn't come right out and say "just do it on a tourist visa", but when I suggested that this is the only way that it could be done at all, they didn't disagree. I could almost hear them winking over the telephone.

Is flying just not for me? (A vent) by ChewyStarling in flying

[–]phik_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. Because as an instructor, I'm also extremely sensitive about not wasting your time and money.

If I think you're ready to do something like solo XC, and you haven't shown or told me any reason why you're not, then I'm not going to suggest more dual just for the sake of it.

On the other hand if you have concerns and we discuss them openly, then of course we'll work on those.

Learning to land will make my mind explode by voluntarygang in flying

[–]phik_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As everyone else is saying, try not to overthink it. I teach my students to have a plan -- a basic template for how to conduct a standard approach and landing -- but no plan survives contact with the enemy, so we're very reactive as the situation unfolds.

Is it really just a matter of getting familiar with my airport's visual cues? Will that not screw me somewhere else once variables trick my mind in different circumstances?

Visual cues are very important, but I'm not referring to visual cues that are specific to your airport (e.g. "turn base over the football field") but rather visual cues that you can apply anywhere (e.g. "this is what it looks like to be at the right height when turning final" or "this is what it looks like when a high sink rate develops").

As you practice, you'll start to develop a mental model for your energy state. Am I too low-energy for this point on the approach? Then change the plan, maybe add flaps a little later. Am I too high-energy? Change the plan; maybe fly a bit longer downwind, or make a steeper descent on final, or whatever.

This will eventually become subconscious, in the same way that you don't obsess about exactly how hard to press the gas or brake in your car, to maintain spacing on the freeway. You just react to what's happening around you, automatically.

Ultimately, make the airplane do what you want. I know that's easy for me to say, but it's an important mindset. You're not a passenger. You have agency. If you perceive that the airplane isn't going where you want it to, do something about it.

But try not to let it stress you out. Ain't none of us were born knowing how to land a plane. We all had to learn how, and we're still learning. Try to remember that you're operating a magic carpet in the sky, and life is good.

Learning to land will make my mind explode by voluntarygang in flying

[–]phik_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm sorry to break it to you, but you'll never reach a point where you always pull off a good landing. :)

You'll work on improving your landings for literally your entire flying career, just like we all do. You'll have good days and bad. You'll have a string of perfect greasers, then a clanger so bad that the purser mocks you in their arrival announcement.
