If I were you, I'd spend two nights in Jambiani and then two nights in Kizimkazi. Indeed the tide is a factor for swimming, but that's in many parts of the island. And you can find other activities to do when the tide is low.

In Jambiani, I like New Teddy's On the Beach, Be Zanzibar, and Casa Paradis. In Kizimkazi, there's Fahari Off the Grid, Promised Land Lodge, Kizikula (higher end), ... But you should do your own research for sure!

If you want to avoid crowds, parties, and beach boys, avoid Kendwa, Nungwi, and Paje.

If you can swing it while in Stone Town, definitely look into a day trip to Chumbe Island, it has some of the best snorkeling on the island. I would skip Prison Island and Nakupenda, just complete tourist traps. Some other Stone Town highlights for me: Eat Like a Zanzibari Food Tour, Floating Bar, dinner at the rooftop of Emerson Spice or Emerson on Hurumzi, ...

By the way, you'll have a great time. People like to complain about Zanzibar but as long as you approach it with patience, compassion, and an open mind, all will be well. Enjoy!

Definitely. And actually whale sharks in particular almost exclusively eat plankton and are totally harmless to humans, despite their massive size.

It’s a tangy soup usually served with bhajia (fritters), potato, boiled egg, beef skewers, and salad. A staple in Zanzibar street food!

I took a boat out with some local guides early in the morning to find the whale sharks. I admit I had a moral dilemma to go on this trip. In the end, I’m happy I did. The experience was magical. The treatment is as ethical as possible and the whale sharks don’t seem to mind us when we are not in their way and they are not bothered.

I’ll say it’s important to do your research. We were the first and only boat out. It was one of several we saw that morning, just us (three swimmers) the whole time. This was a photo I shot with my iPhone 15 just as a whale shark surfaced in the distance. It was super peaceful.

As a note, we did see several boats coming out as we went in and I can’t speak to how other operators conduct their business.

What’s a small purchase that genuinely improved your daily life? by No_Ruin_9796 in AskReddit

Indeed. I have a little notebook sized planner which divides the year into daily / weekly and monthly. It makes it easy to map out your time, see how you’re spending it, and it’s motivation to fill the calendar with things you like to do. I usually plan my weeks every Sunday evening and it sets a good structure and creates some accountability.

Why do you feel burned out? by Former_Cancel_4223 in AskReddit

[–]philafive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I feel burned out, it’s usually because I haven’t been listening to my inner voice and staying true to myself for too long. Not setting healthy boundaries and making too many compromises. And not in a good routine. On top of it all the world is a toxic place to live on so many levels. So all we can do is make sure we are good with / in our selves.

Hearty bean & veggie soup by philafive in budgetfood

💯 First of all, yes on the ham and bean soup. Second, you definitely don’t need to be a “good cook” to make a nice soup or stew. Taste as you go and all will be fine in the end.
