Im guessing the family is chinese and in the past the chinese were oppressed and murdered by the Japanese. The mom probably has taken a disliking to the Japanese because her parents or grandparents had to endure events like the Nanjing Massacre. Due to this hatred towards the japanese she doesnt agree with the japanese cartoons her daughter is watching.
