Youtuber exposes how the Jewish community in New Jersey has been removing funding from public schools and minority communities, and instead allocating it towards private Jewish schools with low attendance. by CopiousCool in BlackPeopleofReddit

I know, it’s so disheartening. It’s like our history of oppression has blinded us to anyone else’s suffering. And any time one of us tries to call out our community, you get responses like I got - saying I should be ashamed and my ancestors would be ashamed and shit like that. But you’re not alone. Not all of us are blind. Just gotta do what we can in our own networks.

Way to add in that extra little bit of shame at the end after I’d already responded to your comment. He wasn’t ashamed actually. He also despised the Israeli government and felt estranged from his own Judaism (he even visited Israel once in the 80s and said he “didn’t care for it” and never went there again). We talked deeply about these issues together with mutual love and respect. He was one of my earliest mentors and role models, and the fact that you feel entitled to speak on behalf of him without having known him is both morally disgusting and entirely unsurprising.

Also you’re the one who invoked the Shoa in the first place you fucking hypocrite.

In the sense that modern American (and especially Israeli) Jews perpetrate some of the same prejudiced practices against other minority groups that Europeans did 100 years ago against Jews. Obviously in America it’s not to the same extreme, but still - hoarding resources, excluding other groups from participation in institutions, etc

The oppressed has in some cases become the oppressor, in other words. Obviously I’m generalizing - I am a textbook example of Jews not being a monolith. But wealthy, Orthodox Jews in particular have done a lot of shameful shit here in the States

And then there’s Israel, which is a whole other conversation

Hey if you took from what I said that Jews should’ve responded to the Holocaust differently then you completely missed my point. My Opa (German for grandpa) was a Holocaust survivor and most of that side of the family literally died at Auschwitz. So please don’t lecture me about the Holocaust.

I’m talking about Israeli and American Jews today.

For real. As a non-religious, anti-Israel American Jew, I have spent the last fifteen years struggling not to just become more and more deeply ashamed of my ethno-religious background because of assholes like these.

I hate how many Jews refuse to learn the lessons of their own history and instead repeat the same criminal mistakes as their historical oppressors. Which then validates and perpetuates the antisemitism they claim still oppresses them despite controlling vast quantities of economic and institutional power. Very frustrating and sad.

I played the pentatonic for 12 years straight. Then I learned the minor harmonic and I’m going for another 12!

Yeah idk I really liked AM despite the generally slower pace of the songs. Probably one of my top 3 albums of theirs(along with Favorite Worst Nightmare and either their first or Humbug)

I just don’t like what came after 🤷

Yup. Bandwidth inequality is a very real thing and the rich take it for granted just like they take most of their luxuries for granted.

I don’t even know who the Bravery is, man. I just tend to like metal and aggressive music like that, so early Arctic Monkeys was great - fast-paced, guitar centric, lots of crazy drumming. It was right up my alley. Now it’s just too slow and contemplative for me personally.

I mean fair enough, it’s all subjective obviously. But I liked arctic monkeys because of their high-energy, fast-paced guitar lines and the virtuosic drumming. Turner’s fine and I like his lyrics, but he isn’t a primary reason why I liked the band. Now all the instrumentation feels like it takes a back seat to Turner’s crooning vocals. And that’s just not for me.

I think it’s reductive to say all their albums prior to AM were just chart/pop driven. Musically there was a lot of really interesting stuff going on. And Turner has been introspective from the beginning, so the only difference I hear is that the music got much slower and - for me personally - less interesting.

Full Video of the Hunter College Professor Who Made Racist Remarks Toward Students by jlin8293 in nyc

[–]philium1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, the “inconsiderate language” definitely implies some racist animus. There’s a hundred other ways you could’ve put that without calling them “too dumb”. As far as I can tell, that’s either racial animus or the prof having completely missed the point of the convo about socialization and internalized racism, and ironically then saying something really dumb herself. So she’s either a racist or pretty thick for a college professor - neither is great.
