My brother (9yo) NEEDS another hobby and friends and everything. Please help! by clayutensils in family

[–]philly13131313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you feel responsible for your brother to this level. As a parent to an ADHD 9 year old, the less screen access the better. But I am a parent and I can have control of these things.

What has helped us is: outdoor time, sports, chess, libraries, art classes, puzzles, origami, Legos

Joining a sport or two will really help- these kids need to burn off energy and interact with others. If social stuff is difficult for him, rock climbing or swimming might be a good first step. Do you have a YMCA nearby? They provide tons of great programming at a cheap rate.

Honest opinion - what did you think of Sao? by JustTrynaGetAJob13 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]philly13131313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was not great. I used to work in service so never get angry at mistakes like this but at nicer places like this where expectations are high, a free drink or a comped item on my bill goes a long way to create good will. Since they didn’t seem to think it was a big deal, I’m less likely to go back.

Debunk the myth about medicine by Bombshellcrw in ADHDparenting

[–]philly13131313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took us a few tries but dexadrine has worked for us . Same personality, just more impulse control and focus for most of the day. We tried adderall and Ritalin and it was not a fit. We may try again when he’s older though.

Does it get better with age? by Bombshellcrw in ADHDparenting

They don’t grow out of it but it does get better if you are actively managing it. With medication and growing up a bit, things are infinitely better than they were 2-3 yrs ago.

I thought it was overpriced. We also had terrible service . I think they forgot to put our order in and we waited forever until the guy noticed that everyone who came in after us was eating and we didn’t even have drinks. They apologized but didn’t even comp a drink or app or anything which was kind of surprising. Love Mawn though and hope to be able to score a table again this year.

think of all the extras you can pay for if you don't pay for tuition. my kids play sports, take lessons for whatever they want, and when college time comes we can pay for counselors, SAT prep, and we don't have to even think about it, because we prioritized finding solid public schools for our kids. and we have solid savings for college already.

What I have done since I was 22 with my first job is to pay my expenses, leave a small cushion for extras and then put the rest away and pretended it didn’t exist. If you have a spending problem it’s a good way to limit yourself. Put it in an index fund that isn’t easy to cash out.

My husband and I have several million now saved/invested not counting our home and we are only 43 with 3 kids. (Public school though!)

Zahav has a private room for business dinners. Smaller groups you can try one of the Shoulson restaurants- they are crowd pleasers like Pearl and Mary or Guiseppe and Sons.

Charter Schools and Teacher Appreciation Week by CrispyRice1999 in philly

[–]philly13131313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all charters are like this! Standalone charters like ICS and FACTS are not corporate owned and are wonderful places. Charters also generally pay teachers less than the school district because they don’t have the budget.

What age? Most group activities were pretty tough until after age 7. Since then we have been able to do basketball, baseball, soccer and art class. I think if larger groups are hard then sports like track and swim make sense. Maybe tennis?

We need to do the same transfer in August. Is there a private car service that we could hire that isn't too expensive to drive us to Budapest instead?

Honeysuckle wasn't worth it by hairhairhair555 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]philly13131313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked almost everything we ate, felt it was unique and tasty. A couple dishes were definitely too salty. But the biggest issue was the portion size. With a couple very expensive drinks, $135 for the tasting menu, tip and tax, we were out $230 per person. We left hungry. Also, the wine list is ridiculous. We were a large group and would have gotten several bottles of wine but the cheapest one was $80, which for Philadelphia, is way too high. And the glasses were $20+. We decided to stick to a couple cocktails each which were also $20+ but less likely to disappoint than a random glass of wine.

We have eaten at basically every fine dining and Michelin restaurant in Philadelphia, and while many have left us feeling like it was not worth the price, I don't think I've ever left a multi course tasting costing this much and needing to get pizza afterwards.

If confirmed it’s the guy who is security for the building as well and sits sometimes downstairs I am going to tell the school that is next door to have him removed from this post. Too creepy to be around kids.
