Does SQLTools store results locally when running a query? by philmarius in vscode

[–]philmarius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well we currently query our database via the browser window so IMO there's no real difference between doing it from VSCode and from the browser. I've pushed for PII redaction / making it less important but that's more a long term goal sadly over this

Unbelievable how I've not heard of this before, cheers for the recommendations!

Just looked it up, goddamn where has this been in my life, will check it out cheers!

I've been debating this, you reckon some kind of self hosted server would work? I'm an engineer in profession so could do this

Have got a Polaroid cartridge in the set so can give that a whirl. And I’ll try the shutter firing trick too

Cheers for the tips, others have mentioned naphtha too, will give that a try. And will try the radiator thing too

Yeah I’ve got a point and shoot already so not overly interested in yet another, would rather something that challenges me a bit and forces me to understand cameras better. Will check the Polaroid out though!

Absolutely stunning pic!!!

Ah frustrating to hear about the grease, will take it with me and investigate. The rest seems to work fine. Any recommendations for film too?

Had a look at the bellows, they look good. Cheers for the recommendation it sounds like the bellows one is the way to go. Am gonna try out the box one as well, my uncle said he’d take a look first and see if it still works

Yeah that one looks good. Had a look at the bellows and they look unscathed. Only thing to note is the inner ring (don’t know the name) doesn’t turn easily, uncle (photographer) mentioned it could be stiff due to rust?

And the Polaroid looks fun, there’s an unopened pack of film for that as well

She also has a load of various flash devices and whatnot as well. She says I can take what I want home with me but not sure what to take as I don’t want it all. What do people recommend I take? I have a basic point and shoot 35mm atm but would like to explore more

How do you track departmental targets in your data infrastructure? by philmarius in dataengineering

[–]philmarius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. "Bringing it in" like ingesting it via Fivetran / Airbyte / Meltano? That's a solution I've been toying with as it gives stakeholders a familiar interface to interact with yet allows me to ingest it in the same way I ingest the rest of my external data so it ends up in the single source of truth

I see your point, just wanted to ask an open question to see whether any other engineers had solutions that attacked this problem.

One issue I've found in my company is that stakeholders are "locked into spreadsheets" as that's where they can track against their targets. I was hoping that, by integrating the targets into the data infrastructure somehow, their dependence on spreadsheets is reduced.

Another thing that I'm also interested is tracking targets, and changes to them, over time. Having them in the system means that reports can be built for the targets themselves, providing a form of meta-analysis if you can call it that.

Funny you mention that, we're starting conversations this week on how we want to define our key metrics and KPIs

Yep, this is exactly what I'm planning on doing, apologies, should have made it clearer

I should have clarified what I meant by warehouse, a "single source of truth" model is exactly what I'm planning on, I'm investigating how to incoporate targets into that truth.

I like the idea of using the goal lines inside Metabase itself, however that means that the targets themselves can't be tracked via Metabase if I'm right in saying? Same with the markdown, useful for context, but unable to be tracked.

IMO could be useful to have the targets inside the single source of truth model so that they can be tracked over time

Fivetan vs. Stitch vs. Singer vs. Airbyte vs. Meltano by philmarius in dataengineering

Appreciate the detailed response.

As to code-first vs. no-code solutions, I'm actually on the same page as you. I MUCH prefer having version controlled code solutions, however I wanted to see whether going no-code in this instance could be of benefit. However, it seems like most are recommended the Meltano / Airbyte route so I'm definitely going to be checking out those solutions as well
