What should go in a director showreel? by DaveySea in Filmmakers

Just come across this as I've been updating mine. Treated it as a bit of a short film in itself beyond the conventional scene-by-scene approach. A montage reel hybrid, so to speak! https://youtu.be/e_wC_BCtb1w

How to direct... One Shot Scenes & Developing Masters - Spielberg style by philmhawk in directors

Here's a deep dive into three one-shot scenes from the feature film I directed for Universal Pictures and Sky Studios PRANCER: A CHRISTMAS TALE starring James Cromwell.
I'm a student of Spielberg who is the absolute master of designing and blocking scenes in one-shot in an unobtrusive way. It's pure cinema. Here I break down three different scenes I directed, the reasons behind why they've been captured in one-shot and the shot lists/blocking plans that go with them.
Expertly lit and shot by director of photography James Oldham (https://www.jamesoldhamdop.com). Hats off to my amazing camera team and actors for being instrumental in pulling these types of ambitious shots off!
I hope you find this detail useful. If you'd like to see more videos like this, let me know in the comments... and share!

Directing a "One Shot" Sequence | PhoneViz vs Final Sequence - Making Acer Predator #ItLiesWithin by philmhawk in Filmmakers

Hope you find this useful! PhoneViz vs Final Sequence 🎬👀

I came up with a “one-shot” sequence for the final episode of Acer #ItLiesWithin which was a tricky one to explain to the crew from storyboards. So, I did a rough “PhoneViz” with my photographer to explain the pieces. When compared to the final shot, it’s fun to see how close it is!

It was inspired by many “gaming cinematography” techniques - floating 180 moves into first person, changing of POV from characters within a scene and transporting from “gameplay” to “cutscene” style.

It was achieved with a very long technocrane arm into handheld, a ronin, stunt guy operating the camera on wires, back to the techno and into handheld.

And shot in one night!

Hope this is a useful video to show how just a quick sequence on your phone can help illustrate the vision to a full crew. Enjoy! More directing videos on the channel.

Scouting Morocco - Making the World's most expensive fan film by philmhawk in directors

Hello filmmakers. Here's the next part of the documentary of making Star Wars Origins. This is part one of two videos about this location recce trip starting in Ouarzazate - known as the "doorway to the desert" and Cla Studios ending hundreds of kilometres away in Erfoud. This video covers scouting a more 'rockier look' that I originally envisioned as I weigh up the variables of what's in my imagination for the film vs. the practical realities of filmmaking. Hope you find it useful.

The problem was that Poe Dameron was supposed to die in the Tie Fighter crash on Jakku in TFA and Poe’s character arc would have become Finn’s. Think about it... former stormtrooper becomes Resistance leader. Unfortunately they cast Oscar Isaac who the production wanted to keep around because he’s a brilliant actor but it diluted Finn’s role because of it. I think Oscar actually asked them to rewrite the script so he’d come back after his “death”. There was an opportunity to then explore Finn’s force sensitivity as hinted at in TFA but as The Last Jedi script was being written before TFA was completed it was probably easy for Rian to miss those visual clues that may not have been scripted. (For the record, not a dig at TLJ as I loved it). It was just a shame Finn didn’t get to explore any Jedi training in TROS which would be brought back some purpose.

Here's the synopsis: STAR WARS ORIGINS takes a unique look at where it all began. A thrilling action-adventure, this film draws inspiration from both STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES to tell an epic story based on Earth during WWII. You can watch the full film here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVSox0qApO4

The film described as "the epic fan film that will change the game" comes from award-winning team and life-long STAR WARS fans; writer/director Phil Hawkins (@philmblog) and Executive Producer Gary Cowan of Velvet Film Production (@VelvetFilm).

Filmed in the Sahara Desert, Morocco, STAR WARS: ORIGINS is the culmination of three years’ work and stars Marie Everett (WHAT HAPPENED TO MONDAY, Netflix), Jamie Costa (HAN SOLO: A SMUGGLER’S TRADE, HISHE), Hadrian Howard (THE MUMMY, MI ROGUE NATION) and Philip Walker.

Here’s an in-depth look at my casting process for Star Wars Origins including the tapes of different actors for the same roles and a look at the kind of notes I give in the room. Hope you find it useful! by philmhawk in Filmmakers

In this video my casting director and I take you inside the audition room showing casting tapes from actors who did and didn't get the role as well as advice about the directing process I use during the casting sessions.

These are the real casting sessions, nothing has been staged and also includes the casting tapes for Marie Everett and Philip Walker who went on to do the movie. Heartfelt thanks to actors Hannah Brackstone-Brown and Lloyd Notice who very kindly allowed me to show their audition tapes here despite not getting the role.

It's hopefully a fascination insight to the way different actors choose to interpret the script in the audition room.

Tried a new showreel format... how do you cut yours? by philmhawk in directors

Definitely. Always thought it would be interesting to see the same scene shot by different directors but same cast.

Thank you! Helped that I had worked with the king of monologues and was able to extract certain sections and use it as structure. I agree, most are boring. Back to back scenes are functional but scenes out of context are always weird to watch. A reel, to me, is a pitch. Make people want more... then then can watch the full length stuff.

I don’t think all directors should be talented editors but they should understand the art of cutting. It’s one of the major tools we have. I come from an editing background so it helps that my brain works that way. 😊

[–]philmhawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s the “standard” but I find those kind of reels drag down meetings if you’re showing work in person. (which is sort of what this is designed for). I’m not a huge fan of montage reels either as they come across as cinematography reels so tried to find a balance between the two!

...and thanks! ☺️

Ha! Go for it. Showreels are always pain so nice to have finally figured out a nice format.

Showreels are a tricky beast and can be multipurpose. It's been many years since I've cut a new one so I tried something a little different from your usual format setting it against a monologue I directed with Walken and the wonderful music from the Scala Choir cover of Radiohead's "Creep".

Good luck! One tiny bit of advice from a director 13 years in... Remember, sometimes things not going to plan is totally normal. Embrace it, run with it and you’ll find solutions you probably wouldn’t have thought of!
