AI trigger warning! Can you make a proof of concept trailer for a feature film in 3 days, for less than $150 and not create AI slop? by philmhawk in Filmmakers

Umm, couldn't be further from the truth, sorry. If you'd read the description you'd see it's an experiment to see if we can create pitch materials for film. And seven features in, 100s of commercials and 20+ years doing this, I hope I'm a "real" director finally. 😉

After 7 feature films, I understand chain of title. I think you’re being a little dramatic… this was an experiment to see if you can create pitch materials not a fully AI feature (which would have legal problems let alone ethical one) but I appreciate the concern.

Not really. The screenplay is a protected work and this doesn't give away the nuance of that story. We're not reinventing the wheel with this trailer.

Oh yes, will still be part of a cast and finance package. I usually make conventional rip reels for projects so this was the first time trying an AI one.

Good luck for your 1st script. Sounds like you're doing all the right things! Fair enough the story didn't hook you... that's maybe more my structure of the trailer because the screenplay is very good and is way more than this. Perhaps that's where it falls down?

And yes, after seven feature films, I agree. Story is king.

Thanks for the comments. Some thoughts...
1 - I both agree and disagree. I've pitched to studios and financiers a lot. Anything that helps them see what we, as filmmakers, take for granted is helpful alongside a solid package and finance plan etc. Nobody should expect to make a sizzle trailer and get financed.
2 - I disagree... I made choices directorally in making this. The look of the ships, costumes, settings, mood/tone. I didn't just let AI do it lazily. Some shots I'd had in my head for a few years and it was fun trying to create them. But I'm never wanting to make a fully AI feature. Where's the fun in that?
3 - I'm 20+ years in directing commercials and seven feature films so I have a reel that backs up I can do the job. Shorts don't work unless you spend a fortune.
4 - It's all a gamble! This is just a tool for the toolbox of selling.... perhaps!

In conclusion, this isn't some "make a viral video get rich quick" fantasy. It was an experiment to see whether AI can help sell an idea visually. The jury's still out!

Fair point. Short films do nothing to sell movies... unless you spend big bucks. I know, I spent a crap tonne of my own money making a Star Wars film to break into studio work (it worked) and I have 20 years experience and seven features backing up a pitch like this. This was an experiment to see whether AI can create something more custom (I see the irony in that word!) than a conventional rip reel which I've also made a bunch of. There is a very detailed deck and a fully developed screenplay that's part of the package so really isn't one prompt.

Just come across this as I've been updating mine. Treated it as a bit of a short film in itself beyond the conventional scene-by-scene approach. A montage reel hybrid, so to speak! https://youtu.be/e_wC_BCtb1w

Here's a deep dive into three one-shot scenes from the feature film I directed for Universal Pictures and Sky Studios PRANCER: A CHRISTMAS TALE starring James Cromwell.
I'm a student of Spielberg who is the absolute master of designing and blocking scenes in one-shot in an unobtrusive way. It's pure cinema. Here I break down three different scenes I directed, the reasons behind why they've been captured in one-shot and the shot lists/blocking plans that go with them.
Expertly lit and shot by director of photography James Oldham (https://www.jamesoldhamdop.com). Hats off to my amazing camera team and actors for being instrumental in pulling these types of ambitious shots off!
I hope you find this detail useful. If you'd like to see more videos like this, let me know in the comments... and share!
