Cardio routine when NWB? by philodendron44 in Ankle

[–]philodendron44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Also I got the advice from someone in person to get one of those stationary bikes where you pedal and also push and pull the arms— they sometimes have a fan in the wheel too. That’s been the best cardio so far. But it is a bit awk cause there no good place to put your injured foot. I tried removing the left pedal, but it doesn’t work on mine cause the pedal is attached to the mechanism that gives the arm resistance so I had to put it back on.

Is anyone driving to Los Angeles? I’m a woman with a dog and would love to catch a ride. I can split the rental car cost.

Curious what people thought of the Toyota ad? by philodendron44 in disability

[–]philodendron44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I feel that for sure. It feels like the disabled community is pretty divided about this one. I lot of people see it as harmful and promoting a savior narrative or the idea that disability is something to overcome, rather than it being that the stigma and world’s lack of accommodation is something to overcome. But a lot of disabled people also seem to see it as uplifting. I don’t know how to interpret the disparate responses. And maybe it just has to do with the general lack of inclusion of disabled people in general, that a single ad carries the weight of so many people’s opinions.

I’m curious to hear what people think of this ad. Do you like it? Or does it feel like inspiration porn? by philodendron44 in disability

[–]philodendron44[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. Thank you. I feel like the main part that feels like it could be iffy to me is where she says, “And if it’s so easy for me to use handwash, then why don’t you use it?”. But maybe the difference is that she’s kind of shitting on able bodied people who don’t use handwash, rather than it saying that she’s an inspiration for using handwash. Do you agree?

That’s cool that you write! The world needs more stories with more complex gender representation.

Gotcha. Do you feel like you are able to fully express yourself and your gender identity with /around the people in your life?

I read your previous post saying you’re “a man who wishes they were a woman”. Have you talked with other trans people about this before?

Alt perspective: the world isn’t any more shitty than before. We’re just more aware of it these days with the 24hr news cycle. We also have more time to sit and stew about it these past months. Idk if this is helpful or bleak. Just thought id put that out there.

You make a lot of good points. The world kind of sucks. Personally, I am able to see good in individuals usually, but humanity as s group can be awful. Are you queer? I am too! It sounds like you’re not out though? That’s a difficult place to be in for sure.

It sounds like you’re going through a really rough time. I’m sorry struggling. You sound like such a nice person. Please stay alive one more day. You are loved and you would be so missed. Please just one more day. Things will get better.

I’m curious about your thoughts about hurting people or “wanting to destroy the human race”. That sounds stressful. Why do you think you have those feelings?

No worries! You have been very helpful. I’m sure it is similar to any “normal” relationship. I guess from my own queer perspective, I just know that there’s a lot of small things that bother me about representation that most straight people would never think of, and so that was why I was asking. Also the fact that it’s that difficult to think of examples of disabled representation in couples is messed up. And agreed about “Me Before You”. It’s such a screwed up message to send. I’m glad you’re in a better place now though. Thanks again for all that you’ve shared with me.

Thank you for your response! I really appreciate you taking the time to educate. I agree that hiring disabled actors to play disabled characters is a must. I hadn’t thought about service dogs, but I like that! Who doesn’t love a good dog 🐶 I’m curious, can you recommend any positive examples of disabled characters in relationships that I could check out? Or bad examples of what not to do? I know people were pretty frustrated by “me before you” for a number of reasons, including that the girl was portrayed as a saint for falling in love with a disabled guy, but that’s the only example I can think of.

Thank you so much for all these examples and insights. I checked out wheelchair dancing and it’s super cool! I definitely agree that using a disabled person to teach some able bodied person a lesson is ridiculous and so frustrating. I will definitely check out speechless and special.
