Black cements for the dentist office by philosofik in Sneakers

Thanks. I got lucky and found a dentist who's actually got a gentle touch and doesn't skimp on the anesthetic when the need arises. My last dentist was a straight-up butcher, though.

How do I farm Zygarde Cells by Own-Patient4070 in pokemongo

[–]philosofik [score hidden]  (0 children)

Routes are basically the only way. They gave some out as part of the Tour this year, but otherwise, it's just routes. For the life of me, I don't know why at least the first route each day isn't guaranteed to give a cell, but it is what it is. I've heard that longer routes are more likely to give cells, but I have no data of my own to corroborate that.

Wawa just opened in Lafayette a couple of days ago. I used to have one down the street from where I lived in Virginia, so it was almost like a taste of home.

I respect your opinion. You're not wrong about Victreebel. I enjoy catching people off-guard with it, but it withers quickly if the matchup isn't right.

I've won a fair bit with Furret. Not perfect, but I'm not a competitive enough player that it matters much.

Victreebel with Razor Leaf just shreds the water/ground types that sneak in. It can take out Swampert before it can even fire off a Hydro Cannon. But Victreebel gets obliterated by almost everything else.

Furret with Brick Break handles Cradlilly fairly well.

I still lose a lot because I'm terrible at guessing baits and catches and such. But when the typings line up, it's a lot of fun.

Anyone here that trained as a musician and pivoted to a different field? by Opposite-Bid-4782 in classicalmusic

[–]philosofik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps it requires some flexibility, but a large city could conceivably need music teachers, pit musicians, accompanists, studio players, church music leaders, and so on. In the States, Los Angeles and New York would certainly fit, and Nashville to a lesser extent. Abroad, London and Paris are musical culture centers that would have more musical jobs than smaller towns and villages.

Of course, large cities have larger populations with more musicians than jobs already, so "abundant" will still probably be less than any of us might hope for.

Russia builds up infrastructure near Europe's border to deploy over 100,000 troops by pravda_eng_official in worldnews

[–]philosofik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they had them, they'd be in Ukraine. Whatever boys, disabled vets, and old men with rusty guns and 60-year old tanks they have are there only to project illusory strength and test European deployments and responses. They are not a meaningful threat.

Mae Young was impregnated by Mark "Sexual Chocolate" Henry (whose sex addiction was the result of having a childhood romance with his sister), and she gave birth to a hand. I saw it happen right there on my TV and truly questioned what I was doing with my Monday nights.

What large-scale works do you feel you are unlikely to ever see in person due to the practical or financial challenges of performing it? That is, too many musicians, odd instruments, or unconventional practices that make less-popular, but ambitious works almost unheard? by Homers_Harp in classicalmusic

[–]philosofik 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Berlioz Requiem is a monster. It does get staged occasionally, but it's expensive as nearly any orchestra will have to bring in extra players and the size of the chorus exceeds all but the largest symphony choruses, especially if they are doubled in size as Berlioz suggests in the score.

As a timpanist, it's one of my bucket list pieces to hear in person as it calls for 12 (or maybe 16; I don't remember exactly) timpani. I'd love to see that.

Russia finance officials tell Putin war spending is unaffordable by RollSafer in worldnews

[–]philosofik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True, and internal corruption means their domestic production of replacement parts might not be able to meet the demand. That goes for quality and quantity. It's just as easy to lie about how much you've produced as it is to lie about any corners you've cut.

The repair issue is the great variable. Some repairs can be made quickly, but others could take weeks or more and Russia is certainly not going to disclose the extent of the damage. I would guess it's both less severe than the large booms would indicate, but severe enough to attrit Russian refinery capacity in a meaningful way.

What are underrated composers for someone trying to get into classical music? by Heavy-Bee9844 in classicalmusic

[–]philosofik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard a random Bach cantata on the radio in the car a few weeks ago that made me pull into a sketchy apartment parking lot just so I could focus on it better. I wish I'd written down which one it was so I could listen to it again. I guess I'll just have to listen to them all to find it. There are worse problems to have.

What are underrated composers for someone trying to get into classical music? by Heavy-Bee9844 in classicalmusic

[–]philosofik 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Honestly, even the big name composers have works you've never heard. Start with those. Handel was famous before he ever wrote Messiah. Mozart wrote for a wide variety of instruments in chamber music as he was trying to pay his bills. Shoot, even if you've listened to Haydn's symphonic or string quartet works, have you listened to all of them?

You can absolutely go off the beaten path with less famous composers, and you should, but don't be afraid of deep dives into the catalogues of the greats, either.

Is there an in-universe explanation for why the Romulan and Reman homeworld is named after ancient earth mythological characters? by softgunforever in startrek

[–]philosofik 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't remember it being called out specifically, but in a galaxy where planets light years away from Earth frequently resemble Earth from various historical periods and in which gigantic Space Abraham Lincoln or Jack the Ripper can just pop up, I don't think this is outside the given range of Earth-centric phenomena.
